Participating In the Mystery of Christ On this solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, St. Paul reminds us that our celebration of the Eucharist is a participation in the body and blood of Christ; a participation in the mystery of Christ. In reflecting on this Eucharistic mystery, the Catechism of the Catholic Church says: "Those who receive the Eucharist are united more closely to Christ. Through it, Christ unites them to all the faithful in one body—the Church. Communion renews, strengthens, and deepens this incorporation into the Church, already achieved by Baptism. In Baptism we have been called to form but one body. The Eucharist fulfills this call." [n. 1396] How does the celebration of the Eucharist deepen your union with Christ? How does it deepen your communion with the other members of the Church?

Fr. Tom Krenik

It is no wonder that followers of Christ are called the Body of Christ. After all, sharing in the same spiritual food and sacred meal, they become what they eat and reveal the Divine Image. There is so much power for healing in the community of believers. Through the Eucharist, Christ becomes as present in those who have partaken of his Body and Blood as he has the elements themselves. The very presence of God touches the depths of the human soul and visits a part of us that no human being can ever hope to explore. We are God’s. The sacred Eucharistic meal is a celebration of intimacy, the reunion of two loves in constant search of and longing for the other. The community of believers receives the power and the presence to touch and heal in the name of the One they have welcomed within. It is now within their grasp to change the way life is lived and to more intentionally put into practice the Beatitudes that the Divine Guest has revealed. We are asked to be like Christ and work to create a world of sufficiency, where the greed of some no

longer creates the want of others but where all of God’s children can find a home and a place at the table of life. The One who makes a home within calls us to live a life that transforms. We are changed ourselves and now become agents of change for others. We are the Body of Christ. God is with us. We have been nourished. Sadly, many are afraid to try. We know what we are called to do, but we struggle with feelings of doubt as to whether God really is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Do our systems have to change? Is it possible that we somehow missed the mark when we put all of our social networks in place and established the business of our lives? Perhaps we have to radically rethink our approach, and that can scare us. We might have to give something up or change, and we don’t want to. As long as want, injustice, division, prejudice, and scarcity still exist, there is tremendous work for the Body of Christ.

Today's celebration of the Body and Blood of the Lord originated in the Diocese of Liege in 1246 as the feast of Corpus Christi. In the reforms of Vatican II, Corpus Christi was joined with the Feast of the Precious Blood (July 1) to become the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of the Lord. We celebrate today Christ's gift of the Eucharist, the source and summit of our life together as the Church. The Council of Trent (1545 to 1563) declared that we must honor Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist publicly, so that those who observed the faith of Catholics in the Most Holy Eucharist, might be attracted to the Eucharistic Lord and believe in the Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ present in this great Sacrament. "The Catholic Church teaches that in the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of the God-man are really, truly, substantially, and abidingly present together with his soul and divinity by reason of the Transubstantiation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. This takes place in the un-bloody sacrifice of the Mass.” (Council of Trent, 1551; CCC # 1374, note 200)

Today, we celebrate the solemn feast of Corpus Christi. It is three feasts in one: the feast of the Eucharistic sacrifice, feast of the Sacrament of the Eucharist and the feast of the Real Presence of Jesus. It is a doctrinal feast established for three purposes:

1. To give God collective thanks for Christ’s abiding presence with us in the Eucharist and to honor him there. 2. To instruct the people in the mystery, faith and devotion surrounding the Eucharist. 3. To teach us to appreciate and make use of the great gift of the Holy Eucharist, both as a sacrament and as a sacrifice.

Our belief in this Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist derives from the literal interpretation of the promise of Christ to give us his Body and Blood for our spiritual food and drink, as found in St. John's Gospel, Chapter 6, and also in the four independent accounts of the fulfillment of this promise at the Last Supper (Mt 26; Mk 14; Lk 22; 1 Cor. 11). Eucharistic theologians explain the Real Presence by a process called transubstantiation: the entire substance of bread and wine is changed into the entire substance of the risen and glorified Body and Blood of Christ, retaining only the taste, color, and shape of bread and wine. Can there be a religion in which God is closer to us than our Catholic Christianity? Jesus does not believe that he is humiliating himself in coming to us and giving himself to us in his flesh and blood; rather, he is expressing his everlasting love for us.

The Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ, teaches us the importance of community, the bond that results from this sacrifice. Just as numerous grains of wheat are pounded together to make the host, and many grapes are crushed together to make the wine, so we become unified in this sacrifice. Our Lord chose these elements in order to show us that we ought to seek union with one another, to allow the Holy Spirit to transform us into Our Lord Jesus Christ and to work with him in the process. Christ is the head and we are the body. Together we are one. That which unites us is our willingness to sacrifice our time and talents to God in our fellow members in Christ’s Mystical Body. This is symbolized by our sharing in the same bread and the same cup. Hence, Holy Communion strengthens our sense of unity and love.

By receiving Holy Communion, we become Christ-bearers with the duty of conveying Christ to others at home and in the workplace, as love, mercy, forgiveness and humble service. Fr. Antony Kadavil

Celebrating the Sacrament of Baptism

Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. At Baptism we receive and celebrate God's free gift of grace and salvation through Jesus Christ. As the first Sacrament of Initiation, Baptism is also the sign of a lifelong relationship with God and with the Church.

Due to pandemic safety and sanitation precautions, we are currently scheduling baptisms for Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. with only one family present at a time. We are currently working with families who had baptisms scheduled April-June. When able, we will resume the once/monthly schedule we had previously. Parents must complete a preparation class prior to their child’s baptism date. For more information and to schedule a baptism, please visit our website Sacraments page or contact Grace Koleczek at [email protected], (952) 698-1724. NOTE: If you are interested in celebrating the sacrament in Spanish, please contact Gerardo Marin, [email protected] or call (952) 698-1726.

RCIA Update Usually our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) and CIC (Christian Initiation of Children) candidates would have been fully initiated into the church at the Easter Vigil. As we all know, we were not able to celebrate our usual liturgies at that time. With the resumption of public masses, we are able to also celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation for the adults and children who have been preparing to receive them throughout this past year. On June 20th and August 22nd we plan to hold a separate liturgy for the # adults and # children receiving sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist). These will not be open to all parishioners due to the need to limit capacity and reduce the risk of spreading the virus. We simply ask that you keep our candidates and catechumens, their sponsors and families in your prayers, and we look forward to the day when we will be able to gather safely with all members of Risen Savior again!

Archdiocesan Synod Update It seems like forever ago at this point, but in February you may remember we encouraged parishioners and visitors to complete the Discipleship Maker Index (DMI) survey as part of the Synod process. The Discipleship Maker Index initiative was hugely successful! The Catholic Leadership Institute (CLI) has received approximately 30,000 submissions from our Archdiocese, which is the most that they have

ever received from a single diocese! The data entry by CLI has been completed, and our Risen Savior staff will be trained on how to analyze and make use of it in the coming weeks. We look forward to sharing what we learn from these surveys!

A reminder that the timeline for the Synod had to be altered because of the pandemic. Next steps, apart from analyzing and sharing DMI results, will now be the Deanery Consultation (February 2021), Parish Small Groups (Fall 2021), and the Synod Assembly (Spring 2022). Based on the information already gathered in the Prayer and Listening Events, as well as the information gathered for the Ad Limina visit with Pope Francis in January, and the results of the Disciple Marker Index, Archbishop Hebda will announce the initial set of focus areas in late June. Those areas will set the parameters for discussions at the deanery and parish levels. For updates and more information on the Synod, visit archspm.org/synod.

A Prayer for Racial Justice On May 25 George Floyd, an African American man, was killed in Minneapolis due to a police officer kneeling on his neck for an extended period of time as he repeated, “I can’t breathe,” and as three other police officers stood by. This horrific act has once more exposed the weeds of systemic racism that have been so deeply rooted that many of us barely recognize them as weeds any more. As a people of faith in a God of love, mercy, and justice, we are called to be signs and sources of love, mercy, and justice in our world. This likely means being uncomfortable as we examine our own biases and privilege. It likely means feeling sadness and anger as we open our eyes to the wounds of the world we live in. We pray for George Floyd, and other people of color including Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery killed without reason, and for their families, friends, and community members, that they may feel the love of God surrounding them, comforting them, and accompanying them in these days. We pray for the people of Minnesota and all other states experiencing unrest in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, especially those neighborhoods most affected by riots, violence, and lootings, that they may come together to heal and that their civil leaders will act with compassion and justice as they rebuild. We pray for the police officers involved: Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng, and Tou Thao, that they be led by our God of love, mercy, and justice to seek forgiveness and that they receive the support they need to do so. We pray for each of us, that we may have the courage, humility, and wisdom to ask God to open our eyes and hearts to the ways we are knowingly and unknowingly complicit in racist actions, words, and attitudes. For more prayers, reflections, and ways to put your faith into action around the issue of racial justice, please visit the Risen Savior Social Justice web page at www.risensavior.org/ministries/social-justice

COVID-19 PROCEDURES AND PROTOCOLS

For your information/disclaimer: The bulletin has to be submitted to the printing company (LPI) early each week. In the current, unprecedented situation with changing regulations, the items and information in this Sunday’s bulletin may be subject to change.

We resumed our regular Saturday 5:00 p.m., Sunday 9:00 & 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. (Spanish) Mass schedule.

Those with compromised immune systems and/or over age 65 are strongly encouraged not to attend, and anyone showing any symptoms of sickness, or anyone who has a household member who is sick or showing symptoms of sickness, should not come to church.

We will continue to record Sunday Masses until it is safe for everyone to attend Mass in person again.

The recorded Masses will still be available on Youtube (Church of the Risen Savior MN) on Saturdays at 5:00 p.m.

The dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation continues until such a time that it is safe for all to return.

We strongly urge everyone age two and up to wear a face mask.

Doors to the building are propped open (rain or shine) for safe, no touch entry.

The entire church space is thoroughly sanitized before and after each Mass, including all entryways and doors.

Chemical safety data sheets are available for viewing at the parish office.

Holy water fonts are empty and hymnals removed.

Hand sanitizer is available throughout the building.

Do not congregate in the commons/lobby at any time.

No seating in the commons/lobby.

Doors to the worship space are open (after sanitizing between Masses is complete).

Proceed straight to the pews and find a seat; do not visit with other people in the gathering space.

Thankfully, we have a large worship space with a lot of room to spread out; make use of that and spread over the entire space.

To ensure proper social distancing guidelines, only every third pew is available for seating.

All unavailable pews are roped off and clearly marked.

Do not enter roped off areas.

In open pews, only sit at either end; non-family members, stay 6 feet apart! Do not sit in the centers of the open pews.

Kneelers are secured (tied up); do not use kneelers.

Before Mass, (seating) instructions are displayed on the screens in the worship space.

No congregational singing; musician(s) and cantor only.

Throughout the Mass, Fr. Tom gives verbal instructions to various procedures as needed.

To minimize contact, collection baskets are placed in the back of the church. You can drop your contribution (envelopes) into the baskets when entering or exiting the worship space.

In order to adhere to the CDC’s no contact guidelines,

do not hold hands during the Lord’s Prayer (Our Father);

the sign of peace becomes the greeting of peace with a friendly wave.

So as to achieve minimal movement and streamline the distribution of Communion, the Mass order is adjusted as follows:

The final blessing occurs BEFORE the distribution of Communion to the congregation.

Distribution of Communion to the congregation takes place after the conclusion of Mass.

Communion is distributed only in the form of hosts.

Pews are released individually only; no line-up in the aisles.

Be sure to gather all your belongings when your pew is released, as you are not returning to your seat but exit the worship space immediately after receiving communion.

To receive Communion,

keep your facemask on while the minister holds up the host and says “The body of Christ.”

Reply “Amen,” and

then remove your face mask to receive Communion.

You should receive communion in the hand with your arms extended.

You may not wear gloves or receive the Eucharist in a disposable item, such as a cup, tissue or plate.

After receiving Communion, EXIT THE WORSHIP SPACE IMMEDIATELY and proceed straight to the parking lot.

F.Y.I.: Eucharistic Ministers receive special instruction on proper protocol and sanitization in addition to their regular sanitization routine.

When exiting the worship space after Communion, do not congregate in the commons/lobby.

Prepare to leave the building immediately.

Due to a backlog of funerals, the start date for daily Mass still remains to be determined at this time. We will keep you posted on updates.

Daily Masses will be held in the main church once a start date has been determined.

All safety measures described above also apply to daily Mass.

Restrooms: only use designated bathroom stalls.

No programs or in-person meetings at this time. We will notify you of updates.
