A Blessed New Year

As 2016 has already begun, a New Year is beginning. A New Year calls us to learn to live each day, each hour, and each minute as a new beginning. A New Year is another unique opportunity to make everything new and renew our lives.

In that sense, we are called to imagine that we could live each day as a day full of

promises. However, our imagination can really lead us to the truth of our lives. One of the problems is that, in some sense, we may allow our past to say to us that the future would be just another repetition of the past. We may allow the discouraging experiences and thoughts to tell us that there is nothing new under the sun. These types of discouraging thoughts can ruin our New Year resolutions, without promising us anything new. And so, we may just survive in this battle of life, rather than living with hope and meaning.

This Sunday, the Church continues her Christmas journey through the Feast of the

Epiphany, in which we focus on the revelation of Jesus as King. This is a celebration of the light of Christ in the form of a star. The unusual star that appeared in the sky and that led the Magi or the Wise Men to find Christ which shows us Christ as the light of the world. This day is observed in the East as Theophany (manifestation of God) and in the West as Epiphany. And so, it celebrates the public manifestation of God to the whole universe.

When the Wise Men arrived in Bethlehem, “They saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” After a journey of almost over 1,000 miles, and in the most unlikely place, the Wise Men had found God Himself in the Person of the Holy Child, Jesus. This journey, the journey of the wise men, still brings joy to our hearts as we celebrate our salvation today.

Therefore, how do we keep the light of Christ, the star which guides us, alive in our

hearts? We can do this by seeing the light that is present amidst a dark world. Also, we can do it by believing that a new direction is possible. Just as the three wise men, were willing to change their direction to go back to their own homes after encountering Jesus, we can also open our hearts for a change of direction in our journey of life.

One of the messages of the Feast of Epiphany is one of hope in the face of darkness.

To be sure, there can be always new Herods in the story. We live in a world where others want to suppress what we stand for as Christians, even with violence. They want to stop us spreading the light of Christ. They may live around us or they may live even within each of us. The feast of the Epiphany can be experienced as the Lord’s gift of assurance that the darkness cannot suppress the light.

As a community of believers we would like to thank you for your generous Christmas gifts to the parish. At this grace-filled time of the year, it is gratifying to see such a generous support for Infant Saviour Parish. Thank you so much for all your generous contributions. God bless you all! Have a Blessed New Year!

The Visit of the Magi – When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem. Saying, “Where is the new born king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage. When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They said to him, in Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star’s appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage.” After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way. Matthew :1-12

Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the Lord shines and over you appears his glory. Nations shall walk by your light and kings by your shining radiance. Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you: your sons come from afar, and your daughters in the arms of their nurses. Then you shall be radian at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow, for the riches of the sea shall be empties out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the Lord. Isaiah 60:1-6
