Message from the Pastor:

In today’s Gospel of Matthew, we hear about two metaphors with both positive and negative connotations. Salt flavors and enhances but is thrown away and trampled if it becomes tasteless. The glow of light shines forth but is ineffective if it is hidden. Jesus is clearly saying that disciples must spend themselves in preserving and carrying forward His saving mission. Disciples must season the world with God’s word and faithfully shine forth God’s Presence. The choice is ours: to season or be discarded, to shine or be hidden. When the food served is bland, we salt it. When day fades into night, we turn on a light. These are simple resolutions for everyday needs. Even these simple resolutions, however, involve a choice and require an action on our part.

The First Reading from Isaiah addresses the “good works” disciples are to do. They deal with the

most basic and obvious of human needs: having food, shelter and clothing. Those who are in need are to be treated as your own. Armed with light and good works, disciples dispel the darkness of the world and shine forth God’s saving works. When you live in this way you are blessed by the Lord; you are like a light that shines before others and the Lord will always be at your side. “Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer, you shall cry for help, and He will say: Here I am!”

After my recent visit to Sacred Heart Mission Church in Jamaica, I spent a week at a Winter Institute for Priests at St. Vincent de Paul Seminary in Florida. Bishop Edward J. Burns of Juneau, Alaska, and whom Pope Francis just selected as the new Bishop of Dallas, Texas, hosted the week. It was a very spiritual, as well as an educational, week with many conferences. Some of the topics we covered included Reverence for Life: abortion, bioethics, death penalty, end of life; Human Dignity: care for creation, economic justice, health care, human trafficking, immigration; Education; Marriage and Family Life; and Faith in the public square. Overall, it was very enlightening and thought-provoking…and nice to be back in school again – even with homework!

Coming up at the end of this month is the Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal 2017. The Annual Appeal is a way to raise money to fund the programs and ministries of the Archdiocese of Newark that impact tens of thousands of lives every year. Our Parish receives a portion of the funds raised in achieving our goal. Pledge Sunday is February 26; our Parish’s goal this year is $32, 000. Your generous support of the Annual Appeal is so needed in helping those less fortunate than ourselves as Jesus talked about in today’s Gospel. Help us be that beacon of light for all our brothers and sisters in need!

I wish you all a wonderful and safe week. God Bless You. Fr. Jacek

FAITH FORMATION

FEAST OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES Patron of the Sick

WORLD DAY OF THE SICK February 11

On Dec. 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX, proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in the apostolic constitution, Ineffabilis Deus. Three years later, on Feb. 11, 1858, a young lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous. This began a series of visions. During the apparition on March 25, the lady identified herself with the words: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” There were eighteen apparitions in all; the last took place July 16 of the same year. Bernadette often fell into an ecstasy. During interrogations Bernadette gave an account of what she saw. It was “something white in the shape of a girl.” She used the word aquero, a dialect term meaning “this thing.” It was “a pretty young girl with a rosary over her arm.” Her white robe was encircled by a blue girdle. She wore a white veil. There was a yellow rose on each foot. A rosary was in her hand. But Bernadette was the only one who saw the vision, although sometimes many stood there with her. One day she was told to drink of a mysterious fountain in the grotto, of which there was no sign, but which immediately gushed forth. On another occasion, the apparition told Bernadette go and tell the priests she wished a chapel to be built on the spot and processions were to be made to the grotto. At first the clergy were incredulous. Four years later, in 1862, the bishop declared the faithful "justified in believing the reality of the apparition". A Basilica was built upon the rock of Massabielle by Abbe Peyramale, the parish priest. Through this humble girl, Mary revitalized and continues to revitalize the faith of millions of people. People began to flock to Lourdes from other parts of France and from all over the world. The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes became worldwide in 1907.

Our Lady of Lourdes, Pray for Us!

February 12

Let us take some time on this special day next weekend to celebrate the gift and blessing of marriage and affirm and support all married couples. The marriage vocation reflects in a special way Christ’s love for his bride, the church - a sacrificial life-giving love that is faithful, fruitful

and forever. More than ever, our families, parishes and communities need witnesses and support for the complementary union of man and woman that Christ raised to the dignity of a sacrament. Parishioners, Michael & Mary Kordiak were

married Sept. 12, 1948, celebrating 69 years of Marriage this year!

YOUTH BUZZ

WHAT DOES JESUS MEAN WHEN HE TELLS HIS FOLLOWERS TO BE LIKE

SALT AND LIGHT?

When someone makes us comfortable, doesn’t put on any false pretenses, and values simplicity, we often refer to them as “salt of the Earth.” Salt is basic. It preserves food and helps sustain us. Salt adds flavor. Think of what it adds to popcorn! Salt can also be used to help heal us, like gargling with salt and water when you have a sore throat. Our personal salt or flavor is what makes each of us different and distinguishable from one another. God wants us to sprinkle humanity with our uniqueness. Along with our diversity, Jesus encourages us to celebrate our talents and gifts. We are supposed to let our light, our special abilities, shine. Shining doesn’t

mean we are always in the spotlight. It means if I have the special gift of laughter that I use that gift to help cheer others up. The gift of kindness toward others may inspire them to shine and pass on kindness.

Jesus doesn’t ask us to be flashy. Jesus calls us to develop, hone, and share the talents and characteristics we possess, to flavor the world with our selves, and to illuminate the world with our loving deeds. Let us… help one another find ways to be “salt” and “light.”

For Your Family Discussion

Who makes a difference in your life? How?

How do you make a difference in your family?

What does it mean to let your light shine?

How do you shine in your family?

Why does Jesus want us to let our light shine?

What are ways we can do that?

CATECHIST SPOTLIGHT:

Anne Laura Fourth Grade

I have been a Lector in this Parish for almost a year. Last summer, I read from the ambo that the Religious Ed. Dept. was looking for catechists to teach in the Fall, and I just knew that I wanted to serve. My story is not unlike many I have heard on

EWTN’s “The Journey Home.” I was a rebellious Albertus Magnus student, became a cynical Vassar English major, and then earned an M.Div., and an M.A. in Creative Arts Therapy — seeking God and rejecting the Church’s teaching at the same time. I have worked in publishing, in hospitals, and for a big investment bank. All my studies and professional experience did not prepare me to teach your children. My return to the Sacraments several years ago was the key to changing my life and helping me to grow in my love of God and to trust where He is leading me. It is because of the healing Sacrament of Reconciliation and the strengthening nourishment of the Eucharist that I have been given the confidence and ability to begin this journey of sharing our Catholic faith with our children. The children surprise and impress me every week: - They have a strong understanding of the difference between right and wrong, and are willing to stand up for what’s right and true. - They practice kindness and respect with each other. - They share their joys and their fears and their concern for loved ones, and I get to help them learn to practice bringing ALL of that to God in prayer! - I shared Luke’s infancy narrative with them (from my old children’s Bible). They LOVED it and they begged me to let them read from the Bible every week! - I felt discouraged one week that my lesson on “God’s Forgiveness” had been a failure, but when the children shared the acrostics they had written on the word FORGIVE — their ability to convey their understanding of God’s love and mercy and their own need to turn away from sin — brought tears to my eyes. I just feel so grateful and blessed to be of service and I trust that as I continue to grow as a catechist so will my amazement at how great is our God!

PARISH & COMMUNITY

“THE RIGHT TO LIFE IS THE FIRST AMONG HUMAN RIGHTS.”

Pope Francis sends his support to the March for Life in Washington, DC.

Hundreds of thousands, including thousands from Northern New Jersey, pro-lifers filled the grounds near the Washington Monument and marched up Constitution Avenue to the U.S. Supreme Court Jan. 27 as both

a protest of legalized abortion and a celebration of successful pro-life efforts across the country. In a papal telegram from Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy Father thanked the marchers for their witness to life. “Pope Francis sends warm greetings and the assurance of his closeness in prayer to the many thousands of young people from throughout America gathered in the Archdiocese of Washington and the Diocese of Arlington for the annual March for Life,” the message said. “His Holiness is profoundly grateful for this impressive testimony to the sacredness of every human life.” The message quoted a passage from Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia: “so great is the value of a human life, and so inalienable the right to life of an innocent child growing in the mother’s womb, that no alleged right…can justify a decision to terminate that life.” Pope Francis, the message continued, “trusts that this event, in which so many American citizens speak out on behalf of the most defenseless of our brothers and sisters, will contribute to a mobilization of consciences in defense of the right to life and effective measures to ensure its adequate legal protection.”

Among the many speakers, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence spoke this year, marking the first time that a current Vice President has attended the event. Pence told the crowds that the pro-life movement is winning, urging them to fight for life with compassion and love. “We praise you, God and Father of us all, Sovereign of all life, for assembling us to proclaim the dignity of each human person, and the sacredness of human life.” March for Life Invocation – Timothy Cardinal Dolan

THE MARCH FOR LIFE VIGIL MASS

Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, and Chairman, USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities, celebrated the Vigil Mass for the March for Life, Thursday evening, Jan. 26th, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. He was joined by 4 other cardinals, 40 bishops, 320 priests, 90 deacons, 545 seminarians and an estimated 12,000 participants in the Mass. In his homily, Cardinal Dolan repeatedly drew a parallel between the Church and the mother's womb as a sacred sanctuary. “How fitting indeed that we would assemble in a sanctuary, as we seek protection, grace, mercy, and guidance in a holy, safe, secure place that reeks of the divine, that envelops us in God’s embrace, where we sense the presence of our heavenly mother, as we are renewed by prayer, encouraged by the solidarity of so many brothers and sisters in the faith, as we are heartened by His Word, as we are nourished by the bread of angels, as we are sent out in confidence for our pro-life testimony tomorrow.” “We come together this evening in a church we call a sanctuary, in a land historically termed a sanctuary, on a planet the creator intended as an environment of a sanctuary . . . to reclaim the belief of nature and super nature that a mother’s womb is the primal sanctuary, where a helpless, innocent, fragile, tiny baby is safe, secure, nurtured and protected.” “Behold our model, our paradigm . . .a sanctuary which beckons us, where we are safe and secure in our mother’s tender yet strong embrace, where the Creator Himself assures us of protection and life itself, a sanctuary God has designed for us to protect our lives now and in eternity.” “Behold the baby in the sanctuary of the womb. Once that’s violated, once a society deems it legal to invade it, the integrity of the natural and the supernatural are ruptured . . . and we have no place safe and secure left to go. We praise you, dear God, for your assurances and encouragement of this evening; we have confidence in the sacredness of sanctuary, you intended to protect your children and we entrust to you all our efforts to uphold the sacredness of human life.”
