Watch Your Mailbox for Future Bulle ns

While we continue the reopening phases of the Parish for prayer and Masses, bulletins will continue to

be bulk-mailed to your home. In order to use the cost advantage of bulk mailing compared to first-class mail, we must continue to mail bulletins to nearly every household already receiving them. This also eliminates another point of physical contact while we social distance. You will be notified when we send the last bulk-mail bulletin in a future reopening phase.

Thank you to all of the parishioners who have sent special donations to defray these bulk-mailing costs!

With our Prayers and Sympathy…

Please remember in your prayers the departed soul of Edna Stoneking, mother of Sandy Gabriel, our parishioner. We extend our condolences and prayerful support to her family and loved ones.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace.

SOLEMNITY OF THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST JUNE 14, 2020

Lauda Sion—The Sequence of Corpus Chris

The biggest feast days of our liturgical tradition often have a problem of “information overload”—many important truths are provided in beautiful prayers and hymns, but we just aren’t capable of taking in all of this at once. One such prayer is the Sequence Lauda Sion, which may be sung in a longer or shorter form between the Second Reading and Alleluia on this feast day. (This year, we are omitting even the shorter option at the recommendation of reducing the amount of singing at Mass). However, the text is too rich in what it offers to teach us about the Eucharist to ignore. The Sequence was written by St. Thomas Aquinas around the year 1264 at the request of Pope Urban IV (when the feast day was added to the liturgical calendar). The purpose of this feast was to serve as a joyful “echo” to the celebration of the institution of the Eucharist on Holy Thursday, in the midst of the somberness of the Sacred Triduum. St. Thomas was already known for his explanation of the

Sacrament of the Eucharist, including the doctrine of Transubstantiation (the way that the bread and wine change into the Body and Blood of Christ in what they truly are, even though they retain the appearance of bread and wine). Among the other prayers and hymns he wrote for this feast day include the hymn Adoro Te Devote and the hymn Pange Lingua, which is also sung during our Eucharistic Procession on Holy Thursday, and from which we receive the Tantum Ergo, which is sung at Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. To hear what the chant sounds like (although there are many other arrangements too), scan one of the QR codes below with your smartphone, or visit the websites listed beside them (addresses are case-sensitive). English Chant, by Fr. Kevin Vogel Latin Chant by Jeff Ostrowski https://youtu.be/e8_8KcQlJec https://youtu.be/eumFVhoMvgo

Laud, O Zion, your salvation, Laud with hymns of exultation, Christ, your king and shepherd true:

Bring him all the praise you know, He is more than you bestow. Never can you reach his due.

Special theme for glad thanksgiving Is the quick’ning and the living Bread today before you set:

From his hands of old partaken, As we know, by faith unshaken, Where the Twelve at supper met.

Full and clear ring out your chanting, Joy nor sweetest grace be wanting, From your heart let praises burst:

For today the feast is holden, When the institution olden Of that supper was rehearsed.

Here the new law’s new oblation, By the new king’s revelation, Ends the form of ancient rite:

Now the new the old effaces, Truth away the shadow chases, Light dispels the gloom of night.

What he did at supper seated, Christ ordained to be repeated, His memorial ne’er to cease:

And his rule for guidance taking, Bread and wine we hallow, making Thus our sacrifice of peace. (Continued…)

News from Our Knights—Knights of Columbus Council # 10960

CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD KENT, PA

This the truth each Christian learns, Bread into his flesh he turns, To his precious blood the wine:

Sight has fail’d, nor thought conceives, But a dauntless faith believes, Resting on a pow’r divine.

Here beneath these signs are hidden Priceless things to sense forbidden; Signs, not things are all we see:

Blood is poured and flesh is broken, Yet in either wondrous token Christ entire we know to be.

Whoso of this food partakes, Does not rend the Lord nor breaks; Christ is whole to all that taste:

Thousands are, as one, receivers, One, as thousands of believers, Eats of him who cannot waste.

Bad and good the feast are sharing, Of what divers dooms preparing, Endless death, or endless life.

Life to these, to those damnation, See how like participation Is with unlike issues rife.

When the sacrament is broken, Doubt not, but believe ‘tis spoken, That each sever’d outward token doth the very whole contain.

Nought the precious gift divides, Breaking but the sign betides Jesus still the same abides, still unbroken does remain.

The shorter form of the sequence begins here.

Lo! the angel’s food is given To the pilgrim who has striven; see the children’s bread from heaven, which on dogs may not be spent.

Truth the ancient types fulfilling, Isaac bound, a victim willing, Paschal lamb, its lifeblood spilling, manna to the fathers sent.

Very bread, good shepherd, tend us, Jesu, of your love befriend us, You refresh us, you defend us, Your eternal goodness send us In the land of life to see.

You who all things can and know, Who on earth such food bestow, Grant us with your saints, though lowest, Where the heav’nly feast you show, Fellow heirs and guests to be. Amen. Alleluia.

Looking for “A Few Good Men”

We are Catholic men building a bridge back to faith. There is much work to be done in this world. Good work, necessary work and that’s what the Knights do every day—Assisting the sick and disabled, protecting those who can’t protect themselves. Whether they are next door or halfway around the world. This is the journey we are on. We do it to be better husbands, fathers, sons, neighbors and Catholics.

New applicants (and 1st/2nd Degree Knights) can complete their exemplification up to 3rd Degree by attending a ceremony online. There are now many opportunities to do the SINGLE CEREMONY online, sponsored by the Supreme Council and by the Diocese of Greensburg.

If you have been thinking about it, don’t wait! Join us today! Visit www.kofc.org/joinus. For more information, call the Parish Office.

Priesthood Ordination—This Saturday, June 13, Bishop Malesic will ordain Deacon Mark Dunmire as the newest priest of the Diocese of Greensburg. The Mass is scheduled for Saturday at 10 AM, and can be viewed on the website and social media of the Diocese of Greensburg. Congratulations Fr. Dunmire!

Welcome Back!—It was good to have so many of you back in the Church for Masses this past weekend. Many of you who were at the Mass on Sunday morning are featured on the cover of the bulletin. This marks a great change from our experience of the last few months. For those of you who are still watching from home, know that we continue to pray for you, and we are looking forward to the time when you can join us again!

The Reason We Gather—This weekend we are reminded of the reason we gather together in our worship: it is there that we encounter Christ in every way. We encounter Him in the Word, proclaimed at Mass, and we can encounter Him in this way even from afar. We also encounter Him in the person of the priest, acting in Persona Christi and in the community that is gathered to worship. Our experience of worship through live-streamed Masses show us that these connections, while we still have them from afar, are much harder to grasp until we come together personally.

But the final and most important way we encounter Christ at the Mass, in the Eucharist, is the one way that we cannot be shared from afar. Yes, we see Him under the forms of bread and wine, even from afar—but the only way that we can encounter Him present in the Eucharist—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity—is in person. My hope is that our experience of distance from Him in this Sacrament will stir up our longing to meet and receive Him as we make our return to worshipping at Mass in person.

Summer Faith Update:

Due to COVID-19 and current State and Diocesan restrictions on in-person gatherings, all summer youth gatherings in the Diocese have been cancelled.

This means that our regional 2020 Summer Faith Experience: “Exploring the Mysteries of the Rosary” scheduled for June 15-19 cannot take place in its intended form. We are exploring some other options to try and provide some kind of program remotely so we don’t miss Summer Faith entirely. If we determine that this is possible, it will come a little later in the summer. Please look for updates in future bulletins.
