Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

H appy Mother’s Day! God bless you all, mothers, who did not hesitate to welcome life, nurture, protect and

accompany it in any moment of its growth. You only can do that, through the gifts received by the same God who is the author of all life and life eternal. The celebration of Mother’s Day is not only the occasion for a nice “dinner out” and the exchanging of greeting cards. It’s first and foremost a celebration of life. Mothers are mothers because they give life and defend its dignity from the moment of conception. Thanks to you, mothers, for allowing us to live today! Last Wednesday Pope Francis spoke about Mary, the mother par excellence, during his weekly Audience. He re-ferred to her as the “Mother of Hope”, the one who answered with courage and obedience to the invitation to give life to the Son of God: “In that moment Mary appears to us as one of the many mothers of today’s world, courageous to the extreme when they have to welcome in their womb the history of a new person who is going to be born.” “Mary” – Pope Francis continued – “is not a woman who gets depressed in the face of life’s uncertainties, when things seem going not in the right way. She is not a woman who pro-tests with violence either, one who reacts with rage against a life’s destiny that so often looks hostile. She is rather a woman who listens. … She welcomes life just the way it presents itself to us, with its joyful moments as well as those tragedies we would never like to face.” Mary is the mother who is present where her son is pre-sent, even under the cross upon which He is crucified and dy-ing, in the most terrible moment a woman can experience. She is a mother who is willing to participate in the sufferings of her son, who will be present with the Apostles when the first com-munity of Jesus’ followers is formed, who is present in Heaven as our mother and teaches us to be a people of hope in the most difficult moments of our life. She is a mother who manifests herself to us and talks to us. When she appeared at Fatima one hundred years ago she urged us not to be afraid in the face of a widespread culture of death, but to pray in defense of life with the certainty that Christ has destroyed all evil through his Resurrection. Today’s celebration urges us to be courageous in witness-ing to the Christian hope we receive through Mary, to the beau-ty of motherhood and to the dignity of all human life. We wel-come with joy once again the witness of Kathy DiFiore and the mothers whose babies were saved through the work of Several Sources Shelters as they speak at all Masses this weekend. The help we can give them today will contribute to diffuse a culture of life based on the message of hope we receive from Mary in defense of motherhood. Let us receive and respond to their appeal with joy and generosity!

With my blessing, Fr. Paolo

MAY14,2017 ARCHDIOCESEOFNEWARK2017LENTENREGULATIONS1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent

are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast & Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, March 5, 2017 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, June 11, 2017. *Canon 920, 1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion as least once a year. The Catholic Chaplaincy at Bergen Regional Medical Center, Paramus, needs volunteers to: Transport long-term residents to and from hospital Masses, to be friendly visitors to those confined to bed or wheelchairs, and to set up and take down altar items for hospital Masses on Saturdays (3:30 PM), and Sundays (11:15 AM). If you are 18 years of age or older and wish to volunteer, please contact Fr. Edito Gamallo at 201-414-0522, or Fr. Chris Isinta at 201-262-1122 for more information. God will reward you for your kindness. REMEMBER...It is through the generosity of ouradvertisersthatweareabletoplacethisbulletinintoyourhandswithout cost to theParish. Whynot getinto the habit of looking through the ads and givethese neighbors and merchants a chance to serveyour needs? Tell them you read about them in theAssumptionParishBulletin.
