  • GOSPEL MEDITATION

2nd Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

"He first found his own brother Simon and told him, 'We have found the Messiah.'" After spending the day in the company of Christ, Andrew took action. He shared the good news! Instead of keeping his newfound friendship with Jesus all to himself, Andrew invited his brother into the fold. Andrew found Simon and "brought him to Jesus." This was no small matter because Simon would become Peter, the first pope! How important it is to bring others along with us to meet Christ!

Yet, how often do we reach out with the kind of confidence that Andrew had? Are we ready and willing to share our faith with our family and friends? Do we consider our relationship with Jesus a gift to be shared, or a fact to be safely hidden away in our personal prayer corner?

Part of our call as Christians is to evangelize others, to share with them the good news of salvation. Loving Jesus and following his moral commands is essential, of course, but it is not the end of the story. The Gospel message is meant for all people, and we are meant to be its messengers. Sometimes this requires us to step out of our comfort zone. It may mean speaking up when we'd rather be silent. It may mean inviting someone to Mass when they might say no. But it might also mean a conversion for someone we care about. It might mean a new minister for the Church. Ultimately, it might mean another saint in heaven.

None of that is up to us, however. What we can control is only whether we share our faith joyfully and extend the invitation to others to experience the peace that comes from knowing Christ.

    Twinned Parish News

Rite of AcceptanceThis weekend there are several youth and adults in the parishes that are taking the first formal step into becoming fully initiated into the church and becoming Catholic with the Rite of Acceptance. During this Rite of Acceptance they are seeking to formally enter into the Order of Catechumens and to take the first official step to becoming Catholic. Please pray for these individuals as they continue in their formation of the faith and acceptance into the church.

Cross Catholic OutreachLast weekend we welcomed Father John P. Fischer of Cross Catholic Outreach who spoke at the Masses on behalf of the poor in developing countries. This ministry was founded to create a meaningful link between parishes in America and the priests and nuns working in the Church overseas in the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Central and South America. If you didn’t get a chance to give, extra envelopes for giving can be found in the back of the each church.

Finance/Parish Council MeetingsNext week both parishes will be holding their Finance and Parish Council meetings on: -January 16: Assumption Finance Council, 6:30 Assumption Parish Council, 7:30-January 18: St. Anthony Finance Council, 6:30 St. Anthony Parish Council, 7:30

Magnificat SubscriptionsThe Magnificat subscriptions for 2018 (from March to March) are due by January 19. Please contact your parish office if you would like to add or cancel your subscription. The final cost will be determined by the number of subscriptions that we get. The cost for last year was $29.95.

Sacristans NeededWe are in need of sacristans at each parish. The main role of a sacristan is to help set up for Mass. This is a great way to help serve the needs of the parish. Contact the office or talk to Father Aaron if interested.

Epiphany House BlessingLast weekend marked the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. There is still blessed chalk and a prayer for the blessing your homes available at both churches.

We host the Graces and Gifts Fellowship Hour afterwards where all of the parish members are invited to enjoy a light breakfast and great faith inspiring conversations. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

Sometimes it is difficult to hear God's call. We are trained to listen attentively

and to hear many things, but spiritual ones are often missed. God is calling us

all of the time. He is calling us to drink deeply of the well of life and not get

distracted by the superficial and short-lasting things we choose to cling to.

Have we ever given a true spiritual life and relationship with God a chance?

Jesus says to us today, "Come, and you will see." May we take Jesus up on his

invitation and like Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, be able to exclaim:

    "We have found the Messiah."
