Sunday Services Outdoor Sunday Services - July 5 & 12 The Leaders Team has determined that we will gather for worship outdoors on July 5 and 12 at 9:00 am and
then evaluate where we go from there. A few chairs will be available in the pavilion for those who want
shade. We ask that you wear a mask if sitting in the pavilion. Otherwise, you are asked to bring a lawn chair or
blanket and sit on the grass area surrounding the pavilion. Small, pop up canopies can be set up before the
service and near the parking lot.
If the weather is inclement, the service will be canceled. Everyone will be notified through email, hopefully the
night before. If we don’t have an email address for you, someone will contact you by phone if it’s listed in the
directory. If in doubt, please contact your deacons.
*The restrooms by the gym will be available if needed, however, they will NOT be sanitized in between uses.*
NOTE: No decision has been made regarding when to start regular Sunday school classes. The adult class on
the History of the Christian Church from Pentecost to the Present will continue to be offered through
conference call hook-up until we resume in-person classes.

Gift Basket for Brisa Rettew You may have heard that Brisa (Saks) Rettew was in a very serious car accident last week. We would like to
bless her with a gift basket when she comes home. We need your help to fill a reusable tote, which is already
purchased, with gift donations. If you are interested in donating an item, please call or text Sheree Dietz on her
cell (717-330-4116) to let her know when you can drop it off at their house (380 Fairview Road). Some ideas
include gift cards, lotion, hand wipes, chapstick/lip gloss, pajamas, etc. Brisa does not like chocolate. She
does like Swedish Fish and Australian licorice. She likes the color purple and grape themes. Let’s add a little
sunshine to Brisa’s recovery! And we’re trying to keep this a secret if we can...thanks!
Thank you...for your prayers! I spoke to one of Barb and Scott Dietrich’s nurses late last week and they are
both doing very well. It is now well over 14 days since they tested positive for Covid-19 so this news is very
encouraging. It is not clear to me if they are to be tested again to verify they are definitely negative. I will
have to clear that up and also I will work on trying to talk to Scott and Barb directly. I hope all is going well for
you and your congregation. -Phil Hartenstine, friend of the Dietrichs (as of June 15)

VBS 2020 – FRUITS OF THE SPIRIT!
KIDS! Join us Sunday July 19 – Tuesday July 21 from 6:30 – 8:30PM as we explore the
fruits of the spirit through bible stories, games, crafts, snacks and more! VBS is for kids
ages 4 – completion of 4th grade. Please register online. For information on how VBS will
look different this year, see parent info below.
Parent Information Hi Parents,
You may have questions about how VBS will be implemented this year. Please find answers to anticipated
FAQs below. We hope your kids can join us!
What safety measures will be in place to protect my kid from COVID-19?
Every kid (and volunteer) will have their temperature taken when they arrive. If their temperature is 100
degrees Fahrenheit or higher, they will not be permitted to stay. We will have mandatory hand-washing
stations with soap and water throughout the evening, as well as hand-sanitizer. We will not require masks and
we will not enforce social distancing.
Will my kid be inside or outside during VBS?
Approximately 80% of VBS activities will be held outside or in our open-air pavilion. Each kid will be inside the
gym for about 20 minutes for one rotation. Bathroom breaks will also be inside the building.
What if it rains?
We will let you know in advance if we are planning to cancel because of weather. Wednesday July 22nd is our
rain date. If it begins to rain during VBS, we will gather everyone in the gym until the rain passes.
What if my kid or another kid gets sick during VBS?
We will have a retired nurse dedicated to caring for any kid who becomes sick. If your child becomes sick,
they will be immediately removed from the group. You will be asked to pick them up as soon as possible.
Why didn’t East Fairview cancel VBS this summer?
East Fairview believes the benefits of children learning and playing safely together in an outdoor setting during
summer months outweighs the risks of contracting COVID-19. We understand that children are in a low-risk
category. We did not make this decision lightly because we treasure the life of each child.
If you have further questions, please contact Mandi Stoltzfus, Family Ministries Coordinator, at 717-203-1794 or

We’re Well On Our Way! Senior Pastor Search Committee Update
Your Search Committee has been hard at work! After spending hours
poring over potential Senior Pastor candidate profiles, the Search
Committee with the Church of the Brethren Atlantic Northeast District's
(ANE District) help has set up a first-round of interviews. The following is
an overview of what happens next:
1. Depending on the outcome of that first-round interview,
second interviews will be held which may include the spouse.
If after the second interview the Search Committee is in
agreement for one specific candidate, all interviews will
cease.
2. After the Search Committee decides to pursue one
candidate, the ANE District will facilitate negotiations
(financial and benefit considerations) between the
candidate and 2-3 members from the Search Committee.
3. After negotiations are successfully completed, arrangements
will be made for the candidate to spend a weekend with the
congregation. This weekend will include an informal/social
setting to meet the candidate and his family followed by the
candidate providing the message on Sunday morning. The
Search Committee will provide more details as we get closer
to that stage.
4. Then it’s decision time for the congregation!! Following the
weekend with the candidate, a two-part congregational
vote will be taken: 1) to Call the candidate to the
Senior Pastor position and 2) to approve the salary & benefit
package.
Specific Prayer Request: Please saturate the Search Committee,
candidates and this process in prayer! Please pray expectantly as God
works within the East Fairview COB family and our future Senior Pastor to
prepare for ministry together. Please pray intentionally for unity, spiritual
strength, wisdom and endurance for the Search Committee to provide
the best and God-blessed candidate for your consideration.
Thank you! Your Senior Pastor Search Committee
What Have YOU Been Doing?
We want to hear from you and possibly share some of what you’ve been
doing during this time of isolation. If you’d like to share something, please
send a short message to Nate in the church office (include a picture if you
want). Let’s brighten each other’s days and hopefully give others ideas of
their own.

Mission Trip to Ghana Autumn Sauder and her mother, Charity
Sauder, will participate in a mission trip to Ghana
July 30 - August 10, 2020.
There will be a special consecration service for
them during the East Fairview worship service on
July 26.
Please pray for them as they serve Christ and
the people of Ghana through the Ghana Initiative
Mobile Medical Mission.
Through your gifts at the Mission Trip banquet in
March, the church was able to help with their
expenses.
Gifts to Water Street and Bowery Missions On June 18, the ESM Team authorized gifts of
$1,000 each to Water Street Mission and Bowery
Mission. We recognized that during the COVID-19
pandemic it is important to support organizations
that help people in need. We used money from
the “Local Outreach” portion of the church
budget that would have been used to support our
participation in the Manheim Project, which we
are not doing this year.

What Does the Lord Require? A statement from David Steele, General Secretary, Church of the Brethren
“What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your
God?”--Micah 6:8
Our hearts break for the loss of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and so many others who have
lost their lives due to the color of their skin. Each death represents injustices disproportionately affecting the
Black community.
Many across our country have protested in the wake of George Floyd’s death because of the way authorities
delayed arresting and charging the police officers involved, but most importantly because his killing is a
perpetuation of the injustice, violence, and racism that have devalued and harmed Black Americans for
centuries.
Many protests have remained peaceful; violence has erupted in some. What is clear is that the nation, and
especially our sisters and brothers from various racial backgrounds are hurting and in mourning.
In Matthew 3:8 we find John the Baptist's call: “Bear fruit worthy of repentance.” Bearing the fruit of
repentance, we stand in solidarity with all who suffer from injustice, violence, and racism.
Brethren have long recognized the inherent worth of all human beings while also recognizing that our church,
and we ourselves, are not free from racism. Our denomination has recognized that we have participated in
and benefited from racism, whether we have been aware of it or not. The Church of the Brethren Annual
Conference in 1991 issued a report on “Brethren and Black Americans” ( www.brethren.org/ac/
statements/1991blackamericans.html ) that said, in part:
“Members of the Church of the Brethren face the subtle temptation of thinking that because there are not
many black Americans in the denomination, or because many of us do not live in physical proximity to black
people, that the problem of racism is not our concern. Nothing could be further from the truth. Many of us
benefit from racist practices, without being direct participants, because of decisions and policies already in
place in our religious, economic, and political institutions.”
Jesus spoke strongly to those who choose willful ignorance for their own benefit, saying in Matthew
23:23: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have neglected
the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith.” And we find this in James 4:17: “If anyone, then,
knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”
As a denomination we must reaffirm that racism is sin, and that there is good we ought to be doing to combat
it. Racism is indeed our concern as we strive to truly love both God and neighbor. When we are not
concerned and do nothing, we sin.
We must repent for ways we have participated in the racism that has caused so many deaths. We must
repent for the ways we have not spoken or taken action against systemic racism’s structures and institutions.
We must repent for the times we have witnessed overt racism yet remained silent.
The 1991 report recommends that congregations “stand in solidarity with black Americans and other victims of
racial hate by speaking out against overt expressions of racially motivated violence and offering assistance to
victims.” In doing so, we identify ourselves as disciples of Christ, who said: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the
captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free” (Luke 4:18).
Let us commit ourselves to be a part of the healing of the nation. Let us pray, and let us act to undo racism in
these times.

“Power of Prayer”
Pete Kontra, District Executive, challenges us to pray in his statement released in early June Certainly, we are called to Pray. In the name of our Resurrected Lord Jesus Christ, and by the power of His
Holy Spirit which we just celebrated last Sunday (Pentecost) as He came upon us to reach all people:
Pray for the family of George Floyd as they grieve the loss of their loved one.
Pray for all those who are suffering in various ways, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, because of the
acts of violence committed against them.
Pray for healing and wholeness for those who are so broken to where such violent acts against another
human being whom God created can be done.
Pray for the grace to live into our call as followers of Christ to love others as He has loved us, and humble
ourselves that we would be open to His transformation and example as willing servants to bring the
needed change in this world.
Pray that we speak less and listen to one another more.
Pray for our leaders, that they would seek God’s face as they make decisions which impact us all. Begin
within your relationships. Move into your community. No matter the person in front of you and the situation
you are in, be the Light of Christ.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. -Matthew 5:9

one to make.
