THE DEEP END: Who do you think you are? ‘A certain fiery and starry light shone from his eyes and the majesty of Godhead gleamed in His face.’ St Jerome What gives you the right? Who do you think you are? In our world, it can be difficult to work out who has authority to speak on certain issues. There are ‘experts’, both qualified and unqualified, at every turn, telling us how we should spend or invest our money, how we should bring up our children, how we should eat, exercise or dress. We usually manage to tune a lot of it out. But when unsolicited advice or criticism is aimed directly at us, we can feel under attack and react accordingly. ‘What gives you the right to tell me how to live my life?’ is a common response. We sometimes need to hear someone’s credentials before we are willing to give them a fair hearing. The Temple scene in today’s gospel sparks a debate about Jesus’ authority. When the Jews question him, asking for a sign to justify what he has done, it is as if they are saying ‘Who do you think you are, coming in here, criticising our activities and telling us how to run things?’ In calling the Temple ‘my Father’s house,’ Jesus has already identified the source of his authority, but his interrogators do not seem to un-derstand, nor indeed do his disciples. This scene offers much more than an angry Jesus and a clueless audience. It is a public revelation by Jesus that he is the authoritative Son of God, and a foreshadowing of his death and resurrection. It was very well attended by members of the various ministries who were treated to an inspiring talk on ministry by our own resi-dent Theologian Fr Lane For those who might have missed it, there will be another session next Saturday 10
th March from 10am to 12 noon in the Pastoral
Centre.
Golden Wedding: Couples who celebrate their wedding jour-
ney of 50 years seem to be truly happy. This can be said for
Maureen and Seamus Coughlan (Balally) who celebrated
their Golden Wedding Anniversary on 24th February. They
attended Mass on Saturday morning with all their family and
friends, including Maureen’s three sisters who came home
from England to be with them for this special occasion. Fr.
Lane told us about how the couple met in the Crystal
Ballroom in the sixties as they danced under the beautiful
crystal chandelier. Later on the family went on to Beaufield
Mews in Stillorgan for a family celebration. At the 10am Mass
on Sunday, Maureen and Seamus renewed their marriage
vows. After Mass they were joined by their friends and
neighbours in the Coffee Dock in the
Parish Centre for refreshments and
cakes and a beautiful heart shaped
cake, which was cut and enjoyed by
everyone there, hosted by The Fáilte
Team. We wish the happy couple many
more years of wedded bliss.

Christ, the Wisdom of God
Jesus said: “Stop turning my Father’s house into a
market.” Isn’t it amazing how we human beings can miss
the point of even the things we treasure most. The Jewish
people saw the Temple as the greatest treasure they had
in their life of faith and yet they developed a system of
abusing that sacred place in the very name of their
religion. We do the same: when we call marriage a
Sacrament and then have little care for the couple
relationship except when it is in trouble; when we call our
homes the Domestic Church and treat them as if Christ did
not live there among us; when we talk about our parish as
a community of faith but do very little to build community;
when we are fed on the Body and Blood of Christ and yet
refuse to love and respect many members of the Body of
Christ. We do it when we allow ritual to become more
important than people.
