The Archangels, Feast day September 29
St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael The Catechism clearly affirms, “The existence of the spiritual, non-corporeal beings that Sa-
cred Scripture usually calls ‘angels’ is a truth of faith. The witness of Scripture is as clear as the una-
nimity of Tradition” (#328). Given that we do believe in angels, we define them as pure spirits and
personal beings with intelligence and free will.
Sacred Scripture identifies by name three angels, who are the great messengers of God—Sts.
Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel. They are called archangels because of their important roles in God’s
plan. St. Michael, whose name means, “one who is like God,” led the army of angels who cast Satan
and the rebellious angels into hell; at the end of time, he will wield the sword of justice to separate
the righteous from the evil (Cf. Revelation 12:7-0). St. Gabriel, whose mane means “strength of
God,” announced to Mary that she had been chosen as the Mother of the Savior (cf. Luke 1:26-38).
St. Raphael, whose name means “remedy of God,” cured the blind man Tobit (cf. Tobit 5).
Treasures of our Catholic Faith
A great Fall read that will help transform your spiritual life is “Story of a
Soul” The Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux by John Clarke, O.C.D. Her feast
day is October 1. Here are some quotes from the book:
“The splendor of the rose and the whiteness of the lily do not rob the little
violet of it’s scent nor the daisy of its simple charm. If every tiny flower wanted to
be a rose, spring would lose its loveliness.”
“For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a sim-
ple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and
of love, embracing both trial and joy.”
“Do you realize that Jesus is there in the tabernacle expressly for you—
for you alone? He burns with the desire to come into your heart . . .don’t listen
to the demon, laugh at him, and go without fear to receive the Jesus of peace
and love . . .”
“Then, overcome by joy, I cried, ‘Jesus, my love. At last I have found
my vocation. My vocation is love. In the heart of the Church, my mother, I
will be love, and then I will be all things.”
St. Therese pray for our families and parish!

Feast of the Guardian Angel, October 2
Prayer to your Guardian Angel
Angel of God, my guardian dear,
to whom his love commits me here,
ever this day be at my side
to light and guard,
to rule and guide. Amen
October 2nd, is the Feast of the guardian angel. As a custom here at St. William an icon of
the guardian angel will be in the Church with a 9 day vigil candle burning in thanksgiving to God for
our Guardian Angels, and for the protection we have received through our Guardian angel’s care.
“How happy is that guardian angel who accompanies a soul to Holy Mass!” - St. John
Vianney
“If the Angels could envy, they would envy us for Holy Communion.” - Pope St. Pius
X
“Make yourself familiar with the Angels, and behold them frequently in spirit. Without
being seen, they are present with you.” - St. Francis de Sales
“When Mass is being celebrated, the sanctuary is filled with countless angels who adore
the Divine Victim immolated on the altar.” - St. John Chrysostom
“Beside each believer stands an Angel as protector and shepherd, leading him to life.” -
St. Basil the Great
“When tempted, invoke your Angel. He is more eager to help you than you are to be
helped! Ignore the devil and do not be afraid of him: He trembles and flees at the
sight of your Guardian Angel.” - St. John Bosco
