The Biggest Scandal in the Church… Something that has scandalized people around the world since the earliest days of the Church is not so much the sins of individual Chris ans, as bad as those have some mes been, but the fact that the Church has always claimed that Jesus is the sole Savior of humankind. Knowing how difficult this is for many people to understand and accept, the Church in every age has tried to explain in fresh ways what it means that Jesus is the Savior, using Sacred Scripture, insights gained over me, and taking into account the perspec ves of various cultures and mes.

One modern example of this a empt is Lumen Gen um (La n for “Light of the Na ons” or “Light of the Peoples”), issued by the Fathers of the Second Va can Council in 1964. In this document, the Council Fathers affirmed that “the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salva on: the one Christ is mediator and the way of salva on; he is present to us in his body which is the Church.” (14) Saint John Paul II, in his encyclical le er Redemptoris Missio (Mission of the Redeemer), promulgated on April 7, 1990, wrote, “No one, therefore, can enter into communion with God except through Christ, by the working of the Holy Spirit.” (4) Following up on that was the Le er Dominus Iusus (The Lord Jesus), issued on August 6, 2000 by the Va can’s Congrega on for the Doctrine of the Faith, signed by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and approved by Pope Saint John Paul II. Dominus Iusus reminds us that: “It must be firmly believed as a truth of Catholic faith that the universal salvific will of the One and Triune God is offered and accomplished once for all in the mystery of the incarna on, death and resurrec on of the Son of God.” (14) In con nuity with these documents, the Congrega on for the Doctrine of the Faith issued the Le er Placuit Deo (It was Pleasing to God) on February 22, 2018, with the approval of Pope Francis. It affirms the unique role of Jesus Christ as Savior. At the same me, it recognizes how difficult this truth is for many people to understand nowadays:

2. The contemporary world perceives not without difficulty the confession of the Chris an faith, which proclaims Jesus as the only Savior of the whole human person and of all humanity (cf. Acts 4:12; Rom 3:23-24; 1 Tm 2:4-5; Tit 2:11-15).[2] On one hand, individualism centered on the autonomous subject tends to see the human person as a being whose sole fulfilment depends only on his or her own strength.[3] In this vision, the figure of Christ appears as a model that inspires generous ac ons with his words and his gestures, rather than as He who transforms the human condi on by incorpora ng us into a new existence, reconciling us with the Father and dwelling among us in the Spirit (cf. 2 Cor 5:19; Eph 2:18). On the other hand, a merely interior vision of salva on is becoming common, a vision which, marked by a strong personal convic on or feeling of being united to God, does not take into account the need to accept, heal and renew our rela onships with others and with the created world. In this perspec ve, it becomes difficult to understand the meaning of the Incarna on of the Word, by which He was made a member of the human family, assuming our flesh and our history, for us and for our salva on.

Placuit Deo, ci ng observa ons made by Pope Francis, goes on to compare the above two cultural trends with two ancient heresies, Pelagianism—which claimed that people could achieve salva on on their own, without God’s grace, and Gnos cism—which claimed that salva on consisted in an individual escaping from his or her body. Both of these heresies, like their contemporary counterparts, are unrealis c about human nature. We are neither self-sufficient nor souls trapped in bodies: Con nued-

Con nued- 4. Both neo-Pelagian individualism and the neo-Gnos c disregard of the body deface the confession of faith in Christ, the one, universal Savior. How would Christ be able to mediate the Covenant of the en re human family, if human persons were isolated individuals, who fulfil themselves by their own efforts, as proposed by neo-Pelagianism? Also, how could it be possible for the salva on mediated by the Incarna on of Jesus, his life, death and Resurrec on in his true body, to come to us, if the only thing that ma ered were libera ng the inner reality of the human person from the limits of the body and the material, as described by the neo-Gnos c vision? In the face of these two trends, the present Le er wants to reaffirm that salva on consists in our union with Christ, who, by his Incarna on, death and Resurrec on has brought about a new kind of rela onship with the Father and among human persons, and has introduced us into these rela onships, thanks to the gi of the Spirit, so that we are able to unite ourselves to the Father as sons in the Son, and become one body in the “firstborn among many brothers” (Rom 8:29).

Placuit Deo reminds us both of the necessity of salva on in Jesus Christ, and of the full scope of that salva on. I recommend reading the whole Le er, which can be found on the Va can website.

Saint of the Day Saint Cyril of Jerusalem

Cyril was born around the year 315, ordained a priest in 345 and became Bishop of Jerusalem around 350. He served in that role for thirty-five years. During those years he was exiled three mes, for a total of sixteen years, as a result of his support for orthodox Chris anity as opposed to the Arian heresy, which denied the eternal existence and divinity of Jesus Christ. During Cyril’s me as Bishop, the Roman Emperor Julian the Apostate rejected Chris anity and tried to rebuild the Jewish temple. Cyril predicted that it would come to nothing. Sure enough, unusual occurrences prevented the comple on of the work. According to contemporary historians, these included an earthquake, fire that came up from the site of the founda on of the building, and crosses that appeared on the clothing of the Jewish and pagan workmen. The project was abandoned. Cyril is known in par cular for his strong and eloquent defense of the true Chris an faith, and for his role at the Council of Constan nople in 381, at which the Creed that we recite at Mass on Sundays was wri en, though it has been changed slightly since then. Cyril was also known as a great teacher. We s ll have copies of nineteen of his homilies that he gave at the the Basilica of the Holy Cross to catechumens preparing to be bap zed at the Easter Vigil, and five homilies that he gave to the newly bap zed in the Church of the Resurrec on. They are beau ful explana ons of the meaning of the sacraments and life in Christ. We also have a homily he gave about the healing by Jesus of the man at the pool of Bethsaida. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, pray for us!
