From Fr. Russ

Every now and then you can read

something from the net that makes you

go: wow! I mean like it really puts things

in perspective and you realize that we

have really had more than we need. We

can take so much for granted in this

consumer, quick fix culture we are a part

of. The following is from a Blog by Ted Bauer entitled:

Imagine if you were born in 1900. Please read, or you

can google, and then take a minute afterwards to thank

your lucky stars.

Imagine if you were born in 1900, by Ted Bauer

It’s a mess out there now. Hard to discern between

what’s a real threat and what is just simple panic and

hysteria. For a small amount of perspective at this

moment, imagine you were born in 1900. On your 14

th

birthday, World War I starts and ends on your 18

th

birthday. 22 million people die in that war. Later in

that year a Spanish Flu epidemic hits the planet and runs

until your 20

th

birthday. 50 million people die from it in

those two years. Yes, 50 million! On your 29

th

birthday, the Great Depression begins. Unemployment

hits 25%, the World GDP drops 27%. That runs until

you are 33. The country nearly collapses along with the

world economy. When you turn 39, World War II

starts. You aren’t even over the hill yet. And don’t try

to catch your breath. On your 41

st

birthday, the United

States is fully pulled into WWII. Between your 39

th

and

45

th

birthday, 75 million people die in that war.

Smallpox was epidemic until you were in your 40’s, as it

killed 300 million people during your lifetime. At 50,

the Korean War starts. 5 million people die. From your

birth, until you were 55, you dealt with the fear of polio

epidemics each summer. You experience friends and

family contracting Polio and being paralyzed and/or

dying. At 55 the Vietnam War begins and doesn’t end

for 20 years. 4 million people die in that war. During

the Cold War, you lived each day with the fear of

nuclear annihilation. On your 62

nd

birthday you have

the Cuban Missile Crises, a tipping point in the Cold

War. Life on our planet, as we know it, almost

ended. When you turn 75 the Vietnam War finally

ends.

Think of everyone on the planet born in 1900. How did

they endure all that? When you were a kid in 1985 and

didn’t think your 85 year old grandparent understood

how hard school was, or how mean that kid in your

class was… Yet, they survived through everything listed

above. Perspective is an amazing art. Let’s try to keep

things in perspective. Our parents and grandparents

were called to endure all of the above – we are called to

stay home and sit on our couch.

Seeking Some Awesome Adults

Are you willing to give 6 hours of your

time to accompany amazing youth

from our parish on their faith journey?

We are seeking faithful adults to pray

for our youth and help lead small

groups of middle and high school

students this fall. You do not need to

know everything about the faith, but

you must have a love for young

people, the Church, and a desire to

grow in your own faith. Each group

will have two adult leaders and both

leaders must be VIRTUS trained and pass a criminal

background check. To find out more information or to

apply, contact Katie Stinson at [email protected].

Adult Ed. Book Study Update

Facilitator: Jim Cook

This study will now be offered

online.

Further details will be available

soon through the parish

communication.

Please order directly from Amazon.

Autumn Months

O God of Creation, you have blessed us with the

changing of the seasons.

As we welcome the autumn months,

may the earlier setting of the sun

remind us to take time to rest.

May the brilliant colors of the leaves

remind us of the wonder of your creation.

May the steam of our breath in the cool air

remind us that it is you who give us the breath of life.

May the harvest from the fields remind us of the

abundance we have been given and bounty we are to

share with others.

May the dying of summer's spirit remind us of your

great promise that death is temporary and life is

eternal.

We praise you for your goodness forever and ever.

World Mission Sunday is a day set aside for Catholics

worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church’s

missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice.

The collection on October 18th is a unique, global

effort for the entire Church to provide for the

building up of over one thousand local churches in

Asia and Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin

America and Europe. Through the work of these

churches, and their witness to Christ, the poor receive

practical help and experience God’s love and mercy,

His hope and peace.

AS OF 10/5/20

Come to the feast! God calls us to

participate in the banquet of life,

a banquet that can fill and satisfy

us like no other. It is a spiritual

feast where we find inner

refreshment and satisfy the thirst

and hunger of our souls. Do you

want to come? Every human being receives an

invitation; no one is excluded. There is no charge and

an abundant table is set. Some will blatantly refuse.

They see no merit in attending and feel that they can

fill their needs in other ways. Others will simply

ignore the invitation. Maybe they are too consumed

with other matters they feel are more important at the

time. Still others may even get angry and feel deep

resentment for even being asked, resorting to acts of

violence in protest of the very presence of the feast. In

spite of this, many will also come. They will be the

good and the bad, the lost and the lonely, and the

ones who understand. They know love when they see

it. When they go to the feast, they will rejoice and be

glad as they will have found the God for whom they

looked!

BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN OFFERS REAL

HOPE AND HELP TO WOMEN AND

CHILDREN

Angela is a single mother of a six month old

baby girl. Her hours were cut this spring due

to the COVOD - 19 and she was struggling

to pay her bills. Angela called Catholic Charities and

met with a social worker to apply for the Mother

and Child Assistance Fund.

Catholic Charities provided assistance with her

outstanding utility bill and helped her to create a

budget in order to stay ahead. Her social worker got

Angela connected to community resources that

helped provide diapers and baby needs. Angela

now attends Catholic Charities' monthly parenting

group to meet other new parents and increase her

confidence in raising her daughter. She has

expressed gratitude to Catholic Charities and the

donors that make the Mother and Child Fund

possible. THANK YOU for your generous support of

the Baby Bottle Campaign. Remember, this year we

are asking you to take/mail a check to the St Pius

Office. Please, CHECK ONLY - NO CASH! Make

check out to Catholic Charities and designate your

donation to Baby Bottle Campaign on the memo

line. Thank you.

Socially Distant Trunk or Treat

Saturday, October 24, Following the 4:00 Mass

Mark your calendars for in-person Trunk or Treating this year! A few extra safety

precautions will be added this year to help us keep our event as safe as possible. We

will not have any indoor activities or our usual pizza supper, but we will have trunk or treating.

Handing out treats?

All participants must wear a mask and maintain social distancing of 6 ft.

Reserve a space for your car in advance on our parish website or via Flocknote.

We’ll mark the parking lot in advance so cars are spaced out appropriately.

Plan ahead for your treat distribution. Consider bringing a small table to set treats on or get

creative with tongs, tubes, or costume gloves for handing out treats. Consider non-edible treats

Bringing your kids?

All participants (ages 2 years and over) must wear a mask.

“Slime” hand sanitizing stations will be set up at the beginning and end of the trunk-or-treating route.

There will be designated entrance and route to follow through the parking lot to get to each trunk to

help space out trick or treaters.

Stay together with your group, split larger families into small groups.

Limit of one family at a time at each vehicle.

Use wide-mouth buckets or bags that are easy to drop treats into.

As with all events during the pandemic, if you are not feeling well or have been exposed

to a known case of COVID-19, please stay home. If your child needs to miss out of the

fun due to high risk family members, please contact the parish office so we can plan for

a contactless surprise from the youth ministry office.

Due to a discrepancy in the Minnesota State

Gambling licensing process, the cash raffle

drawing has been postponed. Updates will be

available as soon as possible. We appreciate

your understanding.

Raffle entries may be purchased at the St. Pius X
