The 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima Part XXVII

AUGUST 19, 1917 continued

Comment:

Regarding the promised miracle for October 13th, Lucia writes, in an interview with her pastor, that our Lady said

to her, “Had they not taken you to Ourem, the miracle would have been greater.” I do not know when our Lady

said this to Lucia, as she does not record it as part of the message on August 19th. However, our Lady appeared to

Lucia many times after the Oct. 13th apparition. These additional apparitions are not usually related with the May-

October apparitions because these private revelations were for Lucia, not for the whole world. The messages of

May-October were for the whole world. These private apparitions obviously were not secrets, otherwise Lucia

would not have written of them in her memoirs; they just are not part of the official message of Fatima.

If you visit Fatima, there is a little chapel on the spot where our Lady appeared. While it has been rebuilt since

the first chapel, as our Lady requested, it remains basically the same. At a distance (rough estimation the length

of a football field) is a large basilica in honor of our Lady.

What I am most desirous of commenting on is the statement by our Lady that “many souls go to hell because there

are none to sacrifice themselves and to pray for them.” When I first read this I was shocked. Why would the sal-

vation of souls depend on my prayer and sacrifices for them? This did not make sense to me in light of what I

knew of Jesus’ death and resurrection for the salvation of souls. However, over the years I have come to a better

appreciation of this mystery. God so loves us that He became one with us in all things but sin and God wills that

we should love Him in such a way that we should seek to become one with Him in all things. This means that Je-

sus wills, does not need, but wills (wants, desires, wishes, et cetera) that we be so united to Him in the mystery of

His cross, His suffering, His offering, His sacrifices, that certain graces flow to us and to others only to the degree

that we are united in His sacrifices with our own prayer and sacrifices. While God does not refuse to send the

necessary Grace of salvation to souls, this does not mean they will respond to it positively, in which case their

souls are in grave danger. When there is a hardening of heart, the soul becomes like the “beaten path” by which

the seed that is sown through the grace of God is “taken up;” it does not have a chance. This is the fault of the

person who has sinned in rejecting God’s grace and mercy. God in His divine wisdom and providence knows

when a soul has reached a point, that in the perfect union of His justice and mercy, the graces necessary for a con-

version of heart are denied the soul. However, God is willing to work a miracle of grace to bring the conversion

of the soul, if someone else is willing to make reparation to His justice and mercy on behalf of the sinner. Please

remember, and this is crucial, that while God is merciful beyond the comprehension of all the Angels and Saints,

He still remains just. Some will object that this is precisely what Jesus has done for us. This is true. In fact, it is

precisely the grace that Jesus has won for us that is given to hardened sinners, but there is a point by which that

grace will not be given unless someone is willing to offer prayer and sacrifices for that soul. If I do this, it is not I

who wins the grace or gives it to the soul: Christ has won the grace and Christ gives it to the soul. Again, Christ

does not need my prayer and sacrifices, He wants them for those who do not deserve them. I merely become an

instrument of His grace and mercy. His justice is merciful, His mercy is just.

In Jesus and Mary

Remember - Pray the Rosary Every Day to obtain peace in our world, the conversion of sinners and the salvation of souls, especially those in most need.
