The Parables of Jesus Tuesday Mornings

9:30-11:00 am Beginning February 25

6 Weeks Jesus’ parables are not simply engaging stories– they are part of God’s revelation to us. The love of God, mercy and forgiveness, and the values of the kingdom are among the great theme’s of Je-sus’ teachings.

Join us as we explore Treasures Uncovered: the Parables of Jesus. Together we will uncover the riches the Lord has for us, especially the “pearl of great price”- Jesus himself.

Sign up after Mass next weekend in the gathering area if you are interested in attending. We will be ordering books for all participants in this class. Attend all six sessions or just the ones you can – all are welcome!

First Reconciliation We’re sure there was much rejoicing in heaven as our St. Anne students celebrated their First Reconciliation! Congratulations! May they always seek the for-giveness of our merciful God as they continue on their journey of faith!

The geographical references in today’s readings from Isaiah and Matthew are highly significant. The lands of Zebulun and Naphtali were the territories of the northern most tribes of Israel. In 721 BC, the Assyrians invaded these regions and destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel. Later, in 587 BC, the Babylonians destroyed the southern kingdom of Ju-dah, sending the population into exile. Matthew uses these geographical allu-sions deliberately to teach that Jesus’ public ministry inaugurates the restora-tion of God’s Kingdom where it was first extinguished. Jesus brings God’s light and salvation into these areas of desolation, fulfilling the prophet Isaiah’s hope: “The people who walked in dark-ness/ have seen a great light;/ upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom/ a light has shone.”

Jesus enters Galilee with the challenge: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Unambiguously, Jesus proclaims his intention of inaugurating God’s Kingdom. He issues a call to enter a new relationship with God by undergoing a change of heart.

Jesus invites two sets of brothers, Peter and Andrew and James and John, to fol-low him. His call comes amid their daily occupations. They respond promptly by abandoning their ordinary activities and redirecting their lives to a new way of service to the Lord and the establishment of his Kingdom.

Jesus’ call comes to each of us in our everyday activities. In Baptism, we are called to recognize that “the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” In our daily lives, we experience Jesus’ presence and witness that we are his followers.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP Drop Your Nets and Be Free

There are times I wish I had no obliga-tions. It would be great to take my wife’s hand, hop in the car, and drive into the sunset. Where we were going would not matter as much as the fact that we would have nowhere we had to be. There would be nothing we had to do. No bills. No commitments. No problems. Freedom!

Life doesn’t work like that, however. When Jesus came along and asked some fishermen to drop their nets and follow him, they did just that. Wow! In some ways, they experienced true free-dom. That is what Jesus offers all of us. Yet, true freedom looks quite different than my dream scenario.

In living in the true freedom that Jesus offers, there are things we must do and places we must go. That is because freedom only exists in following God’s will, not our own. We are called to be and called to give our-selves completely to God without res-ervations. We always have the free will to not respond to His call, but we will find that a negative answer may compli-cate our lives even further. God’s path for us calls on us to give freely of what we have been given. Saying no to that call means we carry the weight of those gifts. We were never meant to keep them. The path of God’s will may seem long and winding, but it is the one that leads us into that sunset. It is the way to true freedom.
