Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church,
Ash Wednesday is approaching fast - ten days from now, on February 26. Our schedule will provide you with op-
portunities to think about your mortality, and then to accept ashes on your forehead as a sign that you know the future,
and want to be ready for a merciful judgment when each of us has to give an account of ourself to the Lord.
On February 26, ashes will be blessed and traced on foreheads in the Sign of the Cross within Masses at 7:00am,
8:30am, 12 Noon, and 7:30pm. (Our school attends the 8:30 Mass.) For the benefit of our young parishioners in
other schools, or adults who are free, we also offer a brief Liturgy of the Word and Signing with Ashes at 3:30pm.
During the Season of Lent, which is from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday , we followers of Jesus Christ must
follow a plan to improve our relationship with God our Father and with the Lord Jesus Christ. A key part of a success-
ful Lent is to admit our sins and be sorry for them, and to change our destructive ways. Very helpful to this good self-
discipline are fasting and abstaining and almsgiving—three disciplines and sacrifices of Lent that precede a joyful Easter.
Here are our Catholic Church's rules and regulations, from the Cardinal's office, about fast and abstinence to help
us make a meaningful Lent. Remember: "No pain, No gain" is true. So is the fact that the person who makes no plan
to do what he or she promises to do, is planning to fail. + Catholics ages 18-59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. + Fasting means eating only one full meal that day. Two smaller meals can be eaten to maintain physical strength, but together they should not equal another full meal. Snacking between meals is not permitted. Even those who are not specifically obliged to fast are encouraged to join in fasting to the extent that they are able. + Abstinence means not eating meat or poultry. Those 14 and older are obliged to abstain from meat or poultry on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. + While the Fridays of Lent require abstinence, all Fridays of the year are designated as days of penance when we can practice self-denial out of gratitude for the sacrifices of Jesus for us. + These weeks are the time for fulfilling your Easter Duty - which is, to go to confession if you have a mortal sin on your soul, and to receive Holy Communion at least once. This is to help us get back to the good habits of Sunday Mass and Holy Communion. Easter duty time is from the First Sunday of Lent (March 1) to Holy Trinity Sunday (June 7).
Sacramental Confession and the Stations of the Cross are two very righteous things to do during Lent. Join us to
make the Stations of the Cross every Friday at 7:30pm, beginning Feb. 28. And come for confession any Saturday from
noon to 1pm, and from 3pm to 9pm on Reconciliation Monday, which is April 6th.
I am happy to repeat the good news that our former Presentation Sisters Convent at 139 Windsor Road has been beautifully renovated by ArchCare—our Archdiocese's organization for many aspects of health care. Since the beginning of January, this building - now called ArchCare at St. Teresa - has been the home for eight young adults with autism. The residents, and their families, are very grateful for and delighted with their new friends and apartments.
The encouragement and prayers of our parishioners and neighbors have been crucial to this success, and soon we are going to have a celebration of this achievement. On Thursday morning, March 26, His Eminence Timothy Cardi-nal Dolan will come for an official Ribbon-Cutting, preceded by a ceremony in our Conran Hall. Invited guests include the members of our Parish Council, who gave me advice and support to go ahead with this great project.
If you would be willing to serve on our Parish Council, this is a time to volunteer and possibly be chosen. On Sun-day March 8 at the 10:30 Mass, we will say a prayer and then pick four new members to serve. The names of all who volunteered will be placed in a bowl, and four will be picked at random. Those chosen will begin their three year term March 11. This has been our annual practice, with excellent results. Members come to meetings in September, No-vember, January, March, and May. Please speak, write, or call if you are willing this year to volunteer to serve if chosen.

A PRAYER FOR THIS WEEK
For our Catholic Church, for our families, our na‐tion, and our world, that our prayers for peace and justice, for safety and good health, and for spiritual improvement, will become a reality in the days ahead, we pray to the Lord...
40 DAYS FOR LIFE
Please join our parishioners and many Christians on SI this Lent who are praying for an end to legal abor-tions and who are participating in peaceful hours of prayer each day from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday 7am to 7pm, at the bus stop on Seaview Ave. outside
Staten Island University Hospital North in South Beach.
Come to a 1:15 Mass and 2:15 orientation next Sunday at St. Charles Church in New Dorp for information, or go to [email protected] and plan to join us.
Ash Wednesday is in 10 days, on Feb. 26. Ashes will be distributed in St. Teresa
Church during and after Masses at 7am, 8:30am, 12 noon and 7:30pm. We will also have a special service for schoolchildren
and adults in church at 3:30pm.
OLD PALM BECOMES NEW ASHES
Our Boy Scouts are preparing to burn last year’s blessed palms outdoors after 12:30 Mass next Sunday. Following a prayer, all the burnt palms that have been brought by parishioners to the vestibule of the church by then will be reduced to ashes. Those ashes will be used to make the Sign of the Cross on foreheads three days later on the first day of Lent, as our personal sign of repentance for the sins we have committed. and as our pledge to improve our lives during Lent.
As they do on every third Sunday of the month, members of the Legion of Mary are receiving
Holy Communion together at the 12:30 pm Mass today. If you would like to know more
about the Legion of Mary, visit their pamphlet rack in the vestibule, or speak to one of the
Legion members after Mass today.
BABY BIN GIFTS WELCOMED TODAY
After Mass today in the vestibule, and every third Sun-day of the month, donations for babies and their moth-ers will be collected. Thank you for helping families in need of assistance at a crucial time for their families to
make a better start in life.
Our Golden Age Society meets each Monday when school is in session (not this Monday)
in our School Gym from 11:30-2.
There are a few bus seats left for a trip on April 18-20, 2020 to Mystic Seaport and to Foxwood Casino in CT, and the Mansions in Newport,
Rhode island. Two nights, two breakfasts, two dinners: only $280.To reserve a seat or for
more information call Lorraine: 917 292 6737.
The winners of our January 50/50 Drawing was Mr. and Mrs. Rizzo. Their prize was $190. If you would like to participate in this monthly activity that benefits our parish and makes people happy,
look for the 50/50 envelopes in the vestibule. The next drawing will be at the end of February.
JUST ASK US FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION STATEMENT FOR 2019 TAXES
We are very grateful to everyone who contributes to the support of our parish, and we are glad to provide you with a statement of your 2019 donations to St. Teresa Church for your tax purposes. Anyone who wants their contribution statement for last year is invited to write a note to us, email to [email protected]. or call 718 442 5412 during the week. Parish Manager Lisa Naughton will be happy to assist you.
