ST. JOHN CHURCH MAY 5, 2019 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

Pastor’s Column

Last week, I promised that I was going to spend some time in my column helping you know more about the many saints whose names are included in Eucharistic Prayer I, also known as the Roman Canon. The first set of names is contained in a section referred to as the “Communicantes”: “In communion with those whose memory we venerate, especially the glorious ever-Virgin Mary

Mother our God and Lord, Jesus Christ, and

blessed Joseph, her Spouse, your blessed Apostles and Martyrs, Pete and Paul, Andrew,

James, John, Thomas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Simon and Jude.”

Mary and Joseph need no introduction. The rest are

the Twelve Apostles, minus Judas (obviously), but including St. Paul. I could probably spend some time on the less well known apostles, but for now, we will move on.

The very first name that is not an apostle, LINUS, has a name that is probably most familiar to us from his namesake in the comic strip “Peanuts”. The name comes from Greek mythology and is connected with the music form we call a “lament.” We don’t know much about St. Linus other than tradition names him as the successor of St. Peter as the Bishop of Rome. The best guess for his administration was from AD 5681. That “job” was nowhere near as complex as what the current Pope does, but he essentially was the overseer of the fledgling Christian community in the city of Rome. (The word that we get our term “bishop” from, episkopos (episkopos), literally means “someone who sees from above” or “overseer”.) Imagine that incredible responsibility he had! The fact that we are still here today tells us that he did his job.

There is no real historical evidence, but the tradition is that he died as a martyr. In fact, the overwhelming majority of pontiffs were martyred through the Edict of Milan in AD 313 which first allowed Christians to practice their faith without state interference. It is generally accepted that Linus died for the Faith, although, like many others, there is no description of the manner of his death. (We will find out about some of those ways later on in the list.) Although we cannot be sure, it is possible that he is the Linus mentioned in Paul’s Second Letter to Timothy. “Greetings to you from Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brothers. The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.”

When we hear his name, we are connected to that community of faith that became so central to who we are as a Church. St. Linus, pray for us!

to defend and celebrate the culture of life

Does it seem as if there’s a revolution in America? A simple online search for answers is a challenge. Wikipedia’s “Cultural Marxism” page and what should be a gateway to the reality of our situation is now edited by radicals trained to steer a casual search away from historical facts!Since the explosive 1960s, Americans have asked where, when and who changed America? An excellent primer and a refreshing break from our dystopian surroundings is Michael Walsh’s The Devil’s Pleasure Palace: The Cult of Critical Theory and the Subversion of the West. Critical Theory released a horde of demons into the American psyche. Everything was questioned, nothing was real, and the muscular , confident empiricism that had just won the war gave way, in less than a generation, to acentralEuropean nihilism celebrated on campuses. Seizing the high ground of academe and the arts, the New Nihilists set about dissolving the bedrock of the country, from patriotism to marriage to the family to military service. They have sown, as Pope Francis once wrote of the Devil, “destruction, division, hatred, and calumny,”and all disguised as the search for truth. The Devil's Pleasure Palace exposes the overlooked movement of Critical Theory, explains how it took root, established and gestated to impact nearly every aspect of American life and society. With God’s help, the culture can be taken back with knowledge and resolve, once we see clearly.
