A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR1. Help Wanted (as in yours.) We have had a deluge of extraordinary expenses

over the past month or so, including drainage issues and repair of the classroom wall, replacement of an air handler and a new air conditioning unit for the parish office and classrooms. The total comes to just about $20,000.00. I would ask all parishioners to consider bumping up their support of the parish for these unexpected (and unbudgeted) expenses. I haven’t really addressed the over-all stewardship of the parish in quite a while. Please consider these needs as a personal request to help us. Thanks so much.

PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGIONThe Director’s letter with a fact sheet announcing the beginning of registrations for the 2017-2018 school year was mailed to parents in July and is available online. As we introduced it last year, you will have 3 options to register your children:1. You can do a complete registration and fee

payment by simply going to www.saintedwards.org, click on the Faith Formation tab at the top of the screen, and then click on the PSR tab. Follow the instructions, and then you also have the option at the end of the registration to pay the registration fees by clicking on the Online Giving tab. If you already have an account established (e.g. parish contributions), you can also select PSR Registration Fees. If you don’t already have an account, it takes just minutes to establish one. The vast majority of last year’s registrations and fee payments were done online and we hope you will take advantage of this option again.

2. The “paper registration forms” are also under the PSR tab. They are in a .pdf Format which you can print out, complete by hand and either mail or drop off at our office along with a check or cash for registration fees.

3. You can stop in the office and complete the forms by hand and pay fees or we can send the forms to you by regular mail.

4. Volunteer teachers are still needed especially in Grades 1 and 4 on Wednesday evenings.

NOTES FROM THE LOFT This coming week, we will celebrate the Assumption

of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For both the Monday Vigil Mass and Tuesday Mass during the Day, the closing hymn will be “Hail, Holy Queen” (#198 in our hymnal). Its text is an adaptation of the Salve Regina prayer that is said at the conclusion of the Rosary (“Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope…”).

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OFTHE BLESSED VIRGIN MARYThe Mass schedule for the Feast of the Assumption, a Holy Day of Obligation, is Monday, August 14th at 7:00 p.m. (Vigil) and Tuesday, August 15th at 9:00 a.m. (Holy Day.)Note: On Monday, Eucharistic Adoration will pause during Mass and resume at 8:00 p.m.

WHAT DOES THE ASSUMPTION MEAN?On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII

declared the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which the church celebrates every year on August 15th. Simply put, the Assumption states that at the end of her life, the Blessed Virgin Mary was taken body and soul into heaven.

While this event isn’t reflected in Sacred Scripture, it is clearly part of the Church’s earliest observance. In the 6th century, St. John Damascene wrote in one of his sermons, “Your sacred and happy soul, as nature will have it, was separated in death from your most blessed and immaculate body, and although the body was duly interred, it did not remain in the state of death, neither was it dissolved by decay; your most pure and sinless body was not left on earth, but you were transferred to your heavenly throne.”

Theologically speaking, death is often understood to be a consequence of original sin. Since Mary was conceived without original sin, some theologians have wondered if Mary died, or perhaps was taken into heaven without experiencing death. The Catechism of the Catholic Church doesn’t answer this question, but simply states “The most blessed Virgin Mary, when the course of her earthly life was completed, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven.”

The feast of the Assumption reminds us of the unique role that Mary served in the process of our salvation. Although she was without sin, we have the possibility of receiving God’s forgiveness through Christ. Her entry into heaven prefigures our own hope of experiencing the same eternal life.

SING-A-LONG Looking for singers, musicians and those willing to help entertain at Tuscany Gardens rehabilitation and care facility in Pataskala. HELPING HANDS – A KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SERVICE OUTREACH On Saturday, August 26th, our Knights Council at St. Edward will have a service outreach day for people in need within our Parish and local community. We are currently seeking volunteers to serve in this ministry, and also collect applications for assistance. The number and priority of projects selected will be dependent on the urgency of the need, available volunteer manpower and timing. CLASSES FOR TWO-YEAR-OLDS WITH COMMUNICATION AND/OR SOCIALIZATION CHALLENGES

On September 5th, our program for two-year-olds with communication and/or socialization challenges will resume. The classes are tentatively scheduled from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. or from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The children work in groups of six with two teachers. Evidence-based “play” procedures are used to improve their communication and socialization skills.


The Catechism CornerThis week, in our Catechisms we read paragraphs 830-856 entitled, “The Church is Catholic,” the 3rd of the 4 marks of the Church: “I believe in One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.” 830 – What does “catholic” mean? It means “universal” in the sense of “according to the totality” or in “keeping with the whole.” The Church is catholic in a double sense: First, the Church is catholic because Christ is present in her. “Where there is Christ Jesus there is the Catholic Church.” 831 – Secondly, the Church is catholic because she has been sent by Christ on a mission to the whole of the human race. Paragraphs 832-835 are entitled Each particular Church is “Catholic.” The Church of Christ is really present in all legitimately organized local groups of the faithful which, in so far as they are united to their pastors, are appropriately called Churches of the New Testament. Paragraphs 836-838 are entitled, “Who belongs to the Catholic church?” All men are called to this catholic unity of the People of God. The Church and non-Christians are explained in paragraphs 839-845: “Those who have not received the Gospel are related to the People of God in various ways.” These paragraphs discuss the Catholic Church’s relationships with the Jewish People, the Muslims, and other non-Christian religions. 845 – To reunite all His children, scattered and led astray by sin, the Father willed to call the whole of humanity together in His Son’s Church. The Church is the place where humanity must rediscover its unity and salvation. 846 – 849 are entitled, “Outside the Church there is no salvation.” All salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is His body. Paragraphs 849-856 are titled: “Mission – a requirement of the Church’s catholicity.” 849 – The missionary mandate. The Church strives to preach the Gospel to all men: “Go therefore and make disciples of all men, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” Matthew 28:19-20. 850 – The origin and purpose of mission is grounded in the love of the Most Holy Trinity, the ultimate purpose of the mission is none other than to make men share in the communion between the Father and the Son in their Spirit of love. 851 – Missionary motivation. It is from God’s love for all men that we get our motivation, “for the love of Christ urges us on.” 2 Cor. 5:14. 852 – Missionary paths. The Holy Spirit leads the Church on her missionary paths. The Church urged on by the Spirit, must walk the road Christ himself walked, a way of poverty and obedience, of service and self-sacrifice even to death, a death He emerged victorious by His resurrection.

FREE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR THOSE WITH AUTISM This class will be held every Monday from 4:00-6:00 p.m. starting September 11th. Participants should have 2nd grade (approximately) reading skills. They will work one-on-one with mentors in small groups on noncompetitive physical activities including: “obstacle” courses, music, dancing, yoga, crafts, games, cooking, interviewing, drama, visiting restaurants and other places of interest in Granville, etc. Children are asked to bring a meal to eat with the other children. This program was created to improve social and communication skills, to allow for sensory issues and a child’s need for routine, to develop executive skills, and to reduce anxiety with new situations, new activities and new people. We also need high school or college students who will be trained to work as paid mentors. These programs are sponsored by the Language Experience Center, a nonprofit organization. Children of all races, religions, and national/ethnic origins are welcome. Classes are held at St. Edward Catholic Church, 785 Newark-Granville Road, Granville. Monday, August 14 ~ Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time Saint Maximillian Kolbe, Priest and Martyr

Holy Gospel: Matthew 17:22-27 As Jesus and his disciples were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to

them, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the

third day.” And they were overwhelmed with grief. When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the

temple tax approached Peter and said, “Does not your teacher pay the temple tax?” “Yes,” he said. When

he came into the house, before he had time to speak, Jesus asked him, “What is your opinion, Simon?

From whom do the kings of the earth take tolls or census tax? From their subjects or from foreigners?”

When he said, “From foreigners,” Jesus said to him, “Then the subjects are exempt. But that we may not

offend them, go to the sea, drop in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. Open its mouth and you

will find a coin worth twice the temple tax. Give that to them for me and for you.”

Meditation: On three different occasions the Gospels record that Jesus predicted he would endure great

suffering through betrayal, rejection, and the punishment of a cruel death. The Jews resorted to stoning

and the Romans to crucifixion – the most painful and humiliating death they could devise for criminals

they wanted to eliminate. No wonder the apostles were greatly distressed at such a prediction! If Jesus

their Master were put to death, then they would likely receive the same treatment by their enemies. Jesus

called himself the "Son of Man" because this was a common Jewish title for the Messiah. Why must the

Messiah be rejected and killed? Did not God promise that his Anointed One would deliver his people from

their oppression and establish a kingdom of peace and justice? The prophet Isaiah had foretold that it was

God's will that the "Suffering Servant" make atonement for sins through his suffering and death. Jesus

paid the price for our redemption with his blood. Slavery to sin is to want the wrong things and to be in

bondage to destructive desires. The ransom Jesus paid sets us free from the worst tyranny possible – the

tyranny of sin and the fear of death. Jesus' victory did not end with death but triumphed over the tomb.

Jesus defeated the powers of death through his resurrection.

Prayer: O God, who filled the Priest and Martyr Saint Maximilian Kolbe with a burning love for the

Immaculate Virgin Mary and with zeal for souls and love of neighbor, graciously grant, through his

intercession, that striving for your glory by eagerly serving others, we may be conformed, even until

death, to your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and

ever. Amen.

Contemplation: No one is overly fond of paying taxes, especially when one thinks they might be

unreasonable or unjust. And yet taxes provide much in the way of necessary services. Jesus and his

disciples were confronted by tax collectors on the issue of tax evasion. When questioned about paying the

temple tax, Jesus replied to his disciples: We must pay so as not to cause bad example. In fact, we must

go beyond our duty in order that we may show others what they ought to do. The scriptural expression to

give no offense doesn't refer to insult or annoyance; rather it means to put no stumbling block in the way

of another that would cause them to trip or fall. Jesus would not allow himself anything which might

possibly be a bad example to someone else. Do you evade personal responsibilities or obligations?

Tuesday, August 15 ~ Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary ~ A Holy Day of Obligation ~

Holy Gospel: Luke 1:39-56 Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah,

where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting,

the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said,

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me,

that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached

my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to

you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit

rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations

will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his Name. He has mercy on

those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, and has scattered the

proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has

filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his

servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to

Abraham and his children forever.” Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her

home.

Meditation: What enabled Mary to grow in faith and to persevere in hope in the face of obstacles and

trials? The Gospel of Luke reveals the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in Mary's life. When Elizabeth

and Mary greeted one another they were filled with the Holy Spirit and with a joyful anticipation of the

fulfillment of God's promise to give a Savior. John the Baptist, even before the birth of the Messiah,

pointed to his coming and leapt for joy in the womb of his mother as the Holy Spirit revealed to him the

presence of the King to be born. The Holy Spirit is God's gift to us to enable us to know and experience

the indwelling presence of God and the power of his kingdom. The Holy Spirit is the way in which God

reigns within each of us. Mary accepted her mission with uncompromising faith and obedience. She acted

with unwavering trust and faith because she believed that God would fulfill the word he had spoken. Her

great hymn of praise echoes the song of Hannah (see 1 Samuel 2:1-10) and proclaims the favor of the

Lord: God exalts the lowly and he fills the hungry. The Holy Spirit is ever ready to renew your faith and

hope in God's promises and to make you strong in love for God and your neighbor. Do you live in the joy

and confidence of God's indwelling presence with you through his Holy Spirit?

Prayer: Almighty ever-living God, who assumed the Immaculate Virgin Mary, the Mother of your Son,

body and soul into heavenly glory, grant we pray, that, always attentive to the things that are above, we

may merit to be sharers of her glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with

you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: How strong is your hope in the promises of God? Mary is a model of faith and hope for

us. And she is among "the first-fruits" of "all those who belong to Jesus" and who share in his triumph (1

Corinthians 15:20-24). There is a venerable tradition dating back to the early church which marks Mary's

"falling asleep" (the “Feast of Dormition” in many Eastern churches) and her heavenly birthday when she

was received into heaven. Her reception into heaven is seen as a sign to all believing Christians of the

promise Jesus made that we too would be received into paradise. At the last supper Jesus told his

disciples that he would prepare a place for them in his Father's house. "And when I go to prepare a place

for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also" (John 14:3).

Wednesday, August 16 ~ Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time Saint Stephen of Hungary,

Holy Gospel: Matthew 18:15-20 Jesus said to his disciples: “If your brother sins against you, go and

tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he

does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that every fact may be established on the

testimony of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell the Church. If he refuses to listen

even to the Church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever

you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall

be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name,

there am I in the midst of them.”

Meditation: If you believe that you have been wronged by someone, Jesus says our goal should not so

much to put the offender on trial, but to persuade the offender to see the wrong and to be reconciled. And

if this fails, then we must still not give up, but seek the help of the Christian community. The emphasis

here is on restoring a broken relationship by seeking the help of other Christians who hopefully will pray

and seek a solution for reconciliation based on Christian love and wisdom, rather than relying on coercive

force or threat of legal action.

Prayer: Grant your Church, we pray, almighty God, that she may have Saint Stephen of Hungary, who

fostered her growth while a king on earth, as her glorious defender in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus

Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Contemplation: Saint Augustine provides a wonderful commentary on Jesus’ instruction in today’s gospel

– something truly worth contemplating: “If someone has done you injury and you have suffered, what

should be done? You have heard the answer already in today’s scripture: “If your brother sins against you,

go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone.” If you fail to do so, you are worse than he is. He

has done someone harm, and by doing harm he has stricken himself with a grievous wound. Will you then

completely disregard your brother’s wound? Will you simply watch him stumble and fall down? Will you

disregard his predicament? If so, you are worse in your silence than he in his abuse. Therefore, when any

one sins against us, let us take great care, but not merely for ourselves. For it is a glorious thing to forget

injuries. Just set aside your own injury, but do not neglect your brother’s wound. Therefore “go and tell

him his fault, between you and him alone,” intent upon his amendment but sparing his sense of shame.

For it might happen that through defensiveness he will begin to justify his sin, and so you will have

inadvertently nudged him still closer toward the very behavior you desire to amend. Therefore “tell him

his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother,” because he

might have been lost, had you not spoken with him” [Sermon 82.7].

Thursday, August 17 ~ Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Holy Gospel: Matthew 18:21-19:1 Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins

against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not

seven times but seventy-seven times. That is why the Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who

decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before

him who owed him a huge amount. Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be

sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property, in payment of the debt. At that, the servant fell

down, did him homage, and said, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.’ Moved with

compassion the master of that servant let him go and forgave him the loan. When that servant had left,

he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a much smaller amount. He seized him and started to

choke him, demanding, ‘Pay back what you owe.’ Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him, ‘Be

patient with me, and I will pay you back.’ But he refused. Instead, he had the fellow servant put in prison

until he paid back the debt. Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were deeply

disturbed, and went to their master and reported the whole affair. His master summoned him and said to

him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to. Should you not have

had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you?’ Then in anger his master handed him over to the

torturers until he should pay back the whole debt. So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of

you forgives his brother from his heart.” When Jesus finished these words, he left Galilee and went to the

district of Judea across the Jordan.

Meditation: Jesus teaches that one must forgive in order to be forgiven. If we do not forgive our fellow

human being we cannot expect God to forgive us. James says that “judgment is without mercy to one who

has shown no mercy” (James 2:13). Mercy is truly a gift and it is offered in such a way that justice is not

negated. C.S. Lewis once wrote: “Mercy will flower only when it grows in the crannies of the rock of

Justice: transplanted to the marshlands of mere Humanitarianism, it becomes a man-eating weed, all the

more dangerous because it is still called by the same name as the mountain variety.”

Prayer: Almighty ever-living God, whom, taught by the Holy Spirit, we dare to call our Father, bring, we

pray, to perfection in our hearts the spirit of adoption as your sons and daughters, that we may merit to

enter into the inheritance which you have promised. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives

and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: When Peter posed the question of forgiveness, he characteristically offered an answer he

thought Jesus would be pleased with. Why not forgive seven times! How unthinkable for Jesus to counter

with the proposition that one must forgive seventy times that. Jesus made it clear that there is no

reckonable limit to forgiveness. And he drove the lesson home with a parable about two very different

kinds of debts. The first man owed an enormous sum of money – millions in our modern currency. In

Jesus' time this amount was greater than the total revenue of a province – more than it would cost to

ransom a king! The man who was forgiven such an incredible debt could not, however bring himself to

forgive his neighbor a very small debt which was fraction of his own debt. The contrast could not have

been greater. If God has forgiven each of us our debt, which was very great, we, too must forgive others

the debt they owe us.

Friday, August 18 ~ Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Holy Gospel: Matthew 19:3-12 Some Pharisees approached Jesus, and tested him, saying, “Is it lawful

for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?” He said in reply, “Have you not read that from the

beginning the Creator made them male and female and said, For this reason a man shall leave his father

and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but

one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, man must not separate.” They said to him, “Then

why did Moses command that the man give the woman a bill of divorce and dismiss her?” He said to them,

“Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning

it was not so. I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries

another commits adultery.” His disciples said to him, “If that is the case of a man with his wife, it is better

not to marry.” He answered, “Not all can accept this word, but only those to whom that is granted. Some

are incapable of marriage because they were born so; some, because they were made so by others;

some, because they have renounced marriage for the sake of the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever can accept

this ought to accept it.”

Meditation: Jesus sets a high ideal of the married state before those who are willing to accept his

commands. Jesus also sets the high ideal for those who freely renounce marriage for the sake of the

kingdom of heaven. Both marriage and the single life are calls from God to live a particular form of

consecrated life, that is to live as married couples or as singles who belong not to themselves but to God.

Despite what we may think, or what others may “decree” as part of being modern and sophisticated, our

lives are not our own – they belong to God. He gives the grace and power to those who seek to follow in

his way of holiness in their state of life. The question for us becomes, then, do you seek Christ and his

graces to help you live your state of life?

Prayer: Almighty ever-living God, whom, taught by the Holy Spirit, we dare to call our Father, bring, we

pray, to perfection in our hearts the spirit of adoption as your sons and daughters, that we may merit to

enter into the inheritance which you have promised. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives

Contemplation: What is God's intention for our state in life, whether married or single? Jesus deals with

the issue of divorce by taking his hearers back to the beginning of creation and to God's plan for the

human race. In Genesis 2:23-24 we see God's intention and ideal that two people (one man and one

woman) who marry should become so indissolubly one that they are one flesh. That ideal is found in the

unbreakable union of Adam and Eve. They were created for each other and for no one else. They are the

pattern and symbol for all who were to come – including those, today, called to this vocation.
