NOTES FROM THE LOFT• A few people have asked me about the possibility of giving
talks about various liturgical music topics. Between the Masses next Sunday, September 2, I’m happy to lead one such talk. We’ll consider a few hymns and take a deeper look at their musical elements, texts, and histories. The discussion will start at 9:30 a.m. and last for about 45 minutes. We will meet in the lounge. Please plan to come and join us!
• The Choir resumes its regular schedule on Sunday, September 9. We rehearse on Sundays at 9:30 a.m., then sing for the 10:45 a.m. Mass. We also practice on Thursdays from 7:00-8:10 p.m. on the loft. We are always welcoming adults and teenagers who are interested in singing. Members must be able to match pitch (to sing on key), but no prior choral experience or other special musical skills are necessary. My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
I am deeply disturbed by the recent allegations brought forth against ex-Cardinal McCarrick, and the information released last week by the Pennsylvania Attorney General, following a Grand Jury investigation, that determined that over many decades some 300 diocesan and religious order priests in the Catholic dioceses of Pennsylvania abused 1,000 young persons.
I feel great sorrow for the pain and anguish suffered by the victims of this abuse. We had all hoped that these tragic events were becoming part of our past, that those suffering could find healing and grace, that those responsible would be held accountable for their despicable acts, and the confidence of our faithful in their Church and its clergy could begin to be restored. While it is a disheartening fact that this tragedy is not behind us, we must also note that since the adoption of the “Dallas Charter” by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in 2002, significant reforms have been implemented. These recent challenges serve as an important reminder that we must stay mindful and vigilant to eradicate permanently these tragic and painful events from our Church.
I want to assure every member of our Diocese that during my tenure as your bishop that I have maintained a full commitment to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People” – with zero tolerance for any form of abuse. We will continue to report immediately to law enforcement and children service agencies when made aware of any abuse, either now or anytime in the past. We will continue to labor diligently to seek out only those men who are worthy of your confidence and trust to serve in our parishes as future good and faithful priests and deacons. And we will continue to be as proactive as possible in ensuring that all who come in contact with young people within our community are in compliance with our “Protecting God’s Children” program to ensure that we maintain a safe and protective atmosphere for our youth.
We encourage anyone who is a victim or aware of any form of abuse to contact local law enforcement immediately and contact the Diocesan Victims’ Assistance Coordinator at 1-866-448-0217 or [email protected].
In light of these developments, I also wish to share with you a web link to the recent statement by Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, USCCB president, (www.usccg.org/news/2018/18-138.cfm). Cardinal Dinardo has announced an initial framework to provide reporting and investigative processes for claims against U.S. bishops. This is an important and necessary step to ensure accountability for the leaders of our Church, whom we all rely on for spiritual direction and Church governance.
I encourage all to join me in offering prayers of healing for all of those who have been the victims of abuse, and pray that children and young people within our Church, through our faith, leadership and diligence, will be spared and protected from such abuse in the future. I also ask you remember our faithful priests, those dedicated men who serve our Church, our parishes, and ministries, and continue to offer them your prayers and support.

PARISH COUNCIL NOMINATIONS Our Parish Council serves in an advisory capacity to the
pastor in the ordering of parish life and activities. The meetings are on the 4th Tuesday of the month, September through June. The next Parish Council meeting will be September 25th.
Each year, we draw names by lot at a weekend Mass, seeking the Holy Spirit’s assistance in the selection of new members. An Excerpt from Pope Francis’ “Letter to the People of God”With shame and repentance, we acknowledge as an ecclesial community that we were not where we should have been, that we did not act in a timely manner, realizing the magnitude and the gravity of the damage done to so many lives. We showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them. I make my own the words of the then Cardinal Ratzinger when, during the Way of the Cross composed for Good Friday 2005, he identified with the cry of pain of so many victims and exclaimed: “How much filth there is in the Church, and even among those who, in the priesthood, ought to belong entirely to [Christ]! How much pride, how much self-complacency! Christ’s betrayal by his disciples, their unworthy reception of his body and blood, is certainly the greatest suffering endured by the Redeemer; it pierces his heart. We can only call to him from the depths of our hearts: Kyrie eleison – Lord, save us! (cf. Mt 8:25)” (Ninth Station).

Monday, August 27 ~ Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time Saint Monica
Holy Gospel: Matthew 23:13-22 Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “Woe to you, scribes and
Pharisees, you hypocrites. You lock the Kingdom of heaven before men. You do not enter yourselves, nor
do you allow entrance to those trying to enter. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You
traverse sea and land to make one convert, and when that happens you make him a child of Gehenna
twice as much as yourselves. Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If one swears by the temple, it means
nothing, but if one swears by the gold of the temple, one is obligated.’ Blind fools, which is greater, the
gold, or the temple that made the gold sacred? And you say, ‘If one swears by the altar, it means nothing,
but if one swears by the gift on the altar, one is obligated.’ You blind ones, which is greater, the gift, or
the altar that makes the gift sacred? One who swears by the altar swears by it and all that is upon it; one
who swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it; one who swears by heaven swears by
the throne of God and by him who is seated on it.”
Meditation: Jesus was angry with the religious leaders because they failed to listen to God's word and
they misled the people they were supposed to teach and lead in the ways of God. Jesus gave a series of
examples to show how misguided they were. In their zeal to win converts, they required unnecessary and
burdensome rules which obscured the more important matters of religion, such as love of God and love of
neighbor. They were leading people to “Pharisaism” rather than to God. They failed as religious leaders to
teach others the way of God's kingdom because they failed to listen to and to understand the intention of
God's word. Through their own pride and prejudice they blindly shut the door of their own hearts and
minds to God's understanding of his kingdom.
Prayer: O God, who console the sorrowful and who mercifully accepted the motherly tears of Saint Monica
for the conversion of her son Augustine, grant us, through the intercession of them both, that we may
bitterly regret our sins and find the grace of your pardon. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who
lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: How can we shut the door of God's kingdom in our lives? By closing our ears to Jesus,
the King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelations 17:14; 19:16), who speaks words of life and love, truth
and freedom, hope and pardon. The Lord Jesus wants to dwell with us and to bring us his kingdom. He
opens the way for each of us to "ascend to heaven" and to bring "heaven to earth" in the daily
circumstances of our lives. God's kingdom is present in all who seek him and who do his will. Pray as
Jesus taught: “May your kingdom come and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).
About Saint Monica: St. Monica is an example of those holy matrons of the ancient Church who proved
very influential in their own quiet way. Through prayer and tears she gave the great Augustine to the
Church of God, and thereby earned for herself a place of honor in the history of God's kingdom on earth.
The Confessions of St. Augustine provide certain biographical details. Born of Christian parents about the
year 331 at Tagaste in Africa, Monica was reared under the strict supervision of an elderly nurse who had
likewise reared her father. In the course of time she was given in marriage to a pagan named Patricius.
Besides other faults, he possessed a very irascible nature; it was in this school of suffering that Monica
learned patience. It was her custom to wait until his anger had cooled; only then did she give a kindly
remonstrance. Evil-minded servants had prejudiced her mother-in-law against her, but Monica mastered
the situation by kindness and sympathy. Her marriage was blessed with three children: Navigius,
Perpetua, who later became a nun, and Augustine, her problem child. According to the custom of the day,
baptism was not administered to infants soon after birth. It was as an adolescent that Augustine became a
catechumen, but possibly through a premonition of his future sinful life, Monica postponed his baptism
even when her son desired it during a severe illness. When Augustine was nineteen years old, his father
Patricius died; by patience and prayer Monica had obtained the conversion of her husband. The youthful
Augustine caused his mother untold worry by indulging in every type of sin and dissipation. As a last
resort after all her tears and entreaties had proved fruitless, she forbade him entrance to her home; but
after a vision she received him back again. In her sorrow a certain bishop consoled her: "Don't worry, it is
impossible that a son of so many tears should be lost." When Augustine was planning his journey to
Rome, Monica wished to accompany him. He outwitted her, however, and had already embarked when she
arrived at the docks. Later she followed him to Milan, ever growing in her attachment to God. St. Ambrose
held her in high esteem, and congratulated Augustine on having such a mother. At Milan she prepared the
way for her son's conversion. Finally the moment came when her tears of sorrow changed to tears of joy.
Augustine was baptized. And her lifework was completed. She died in her fifty-sixth year, as she was
returning to Africa. The description of her death is one of the most beautiful passages in her son's famous
“Confessions.”
Tuesday, August 28 ~ Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time
Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
Holy Gospel: Matthew 23:23-26 Jesus said: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You
pay tithes of mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier things of the law: judgment and
mercy and fidelity. But these you should have done, without neglecting the others. Blind guides, who
strain out the gnat and swallow the camel! “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You
cleanse the outside of cup and dish, but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee,
cleanse first the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may be clean.”
Meditation: Jesus used the example of tithing to show how far the scribes and Pharisees had missed the
mark. God had commanded a tithe of the first fruits of one's labor as an expression of thanksgiving and
honor for his providential care for his people (ref. Deuteronomy 14:22; Leviticus 27:30). The scribes,
however, went to extreme lengths to tithe on insignificant things (such as tiny plants) with great
mathematical accuracy. They were very attentive to minute matters of little importance, but they
neglected to care for the needy and the weak. Jesus admonished them because their hearts were not
right. They were filled with pride and contempt for others. They put unnecessary burdens on others while
neglecting to show charity, especially to the weak and the poor. They meticulously went through the
correct motions of conventional religion while forgetting the realities.
Prayer: Renew in your Church, we pray, O Lord, that spirit with which you endowed your Bishop Saint
Augustine that, filled with the same spirit, we may thirst for you, the sole fount of true wisdom, and seek
you, the author of heavenly love. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: In light of today’s gospel, do you allow any blindspots to blur your vision of God's
kingdom and his ways? Jesus went to the heart of the matter when he called the religious leaders of his
day blind Pharisees and hypocrites! The word “hypocrite” means “actor” — someone who puts on a show
or a “game face” usually to draw attention to themselves, or a “public face” to appear one way on public,
but in reality act very different “behind the scenes.” Jesus chastised them for neglecting the more
important matters of religion, such as justice and the love of God and love of neighbor. Might we be guilty
at times for falling into the same mindset? We need to remember that God places in every heart a desire
and intimate yearning to personally know the One who created us in love for love. Saint Augustine, who
found God only after many years of “acting” and wandering in disbelief and spiritual darkness, exclaimed
in his book Confessions: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they
rest in You.” May we learn to rest in the arms of the Lord, and to have genuine minds and hearts rooted in
Christ.
Wednesday, August 29 ~ Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time
The Passion (Martyrdom) of Saint John the Baptist
Holy Gospel: Mark 6:17-29 Herod was the one who had John the Baptist arrested and bound in prison
on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. John had said to Herod, “It is
not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill
him but was unable to do so. Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept
him in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. She
had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military
officers, and the leading men of Galilee. Herodias’ own daughter came in and performed a dance that
delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it
to you.” He even swore many things to her, “I will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my
kingdom.” She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the
Baptist.” The girl hurried back to the king’s presence and made her request, “I want you to give me at
once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths
and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her. So he promptly dispatched an executioner with
orders to bring back his head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison. He brought in the head on a
platter and gave it to the girl. The girl in turn gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it,
they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
Meditation: John the Baptist is the bridge between the Old and New Testaments. He is the last of the Old
Testament prophets who pointed the way to the Messiah, and he is the first of the New Testament
witnesses and martyrs of Christ. Jesus equated the coming of his kingdom with violence. John the Baptist
suffered violence for proclaiming that the Kingdom of God was near. He was thrown into prison. Why did
Herod put John to death when he knew him to be a righteous and holy man? Herod was a weak ruler. He
could take a strong stand on the wrong things when he knew the right. Such a stand, however, was a sign
of weakness and cowardice. Unfortunately for Herod, he could not rid himself of sin by ridding himself of
the man who confronted him with his sin. The simplest way to shut up permanently John, who proclaimed
the Truth, was to behead him.
Prayer: O God, who willed that Saint John the Baptist should go ahead of your Son both in his birth and
in his death, grant that, as he died a Martyr for truth and justice, we, too, may fight hard for the
confession of what you teach. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in
the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: The blood of martyrs throughout the ages bears testimony to the truth, teachings and
challenges of the gospel and their willingness to suffer and die for their faith prove victory rather than
defeat for the kingdom of God. Through Christ's victory on the cross they obtain the glorious crown of
victory and everlasting life with Jesus Christ. What gives us the power, boldness, and courage to be living
witnesses to Jesus Christ and to the truths of the gospel? The Holy Spirit fills us with courage, love, and
boldness to make Jesus Christ known and loved. We should never be fearful of those who oppose the
truths of sacred scripture, and those who challenge the teachings of Jesus Christ, because the love of
Jesus Christ is stronger than fear and death itself. His love conquers all, even our fears and timidity in the
face of opposition and persecution. We can trust in his grace and help at all times. Are you ready to make
Christ known and loved, to stand up for what is right, true, and good according to Jesus Christ, and if
necessary to suffer in one way or another for his sake and the sake of the gospel?
Thursday, August 30 ~ Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time
Holy Gospel: Matthew 24:42-51 Jesus said to his disciples: “Stay awake! For you do not know on
which day your Lord will come. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night
when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you
also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. “Who, then, is the
faithful and prudent servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household to distribute to them
their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on his arrival finds doing so.
Amen, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property. But if that wicked servant says to himself,
‘My master is long delayed,’ and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with drunkards, the
servant’s master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely
and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.”
Meditation: Jesus ends his teaching on watchfulness and vigilance with a parable that contains an
element of surprise – the master suddenly returns home unexpectedly, probably from a long journey. He
rewards the dutiful servant for his faithfulness to his master. He has performed his service with diligence
and has done all that the master required of him. The master punishes the other servant who behaved
wickedly. This servant was not only irresponsible, he was frequently absent from work and spent his
master's money by throwing endless parties with his friends. The wicked servant also abused his fellow
workers with physical force and violence, probably to make them do the work he was supposed to do for
his master. The master not only throws him out of his house, he fires him from his job! He also throws
him into the worst possible place – a prison of no return where there is nothing but torment and misery.
Should we be surprised to see the master acting with such swift judgment? After all he is only giving back
what they have given to him. The master rewards the faithful servant with honor, promotion, and
friendship, and he punishes the unfaithful servant – who stole from his master and used his position to
abuse others – by removing him from his position of trust with the master and by throwing him into
prison for robbing the master and mistreating his fellow servants.
Prayer: O God, who cause the minds of the faithful to unite in a single purpose, grant your people to love
what you command and to desire what you promise, that, amid the uncertainties of this world, our hearts
may be fixed on that place where true gladness is found. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who
lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: Jesus calls us to be vigilant in watching for his return and to be ready to meet him when
he calls us to himself. The Lord gives us his Holy Spirit so that we may have the wisdom, help, and
strength we need to turn away from sin to embrace God's way of love, justice, and holiness. The Lord's
warning of judgment causes dismay for those who are unprepared, but it brings joyful hope to those who
eagerly wait for his return in glory. God's judgment is good news for those who are ready to meet him.
Their reward is God himself, the source of all truth, beauty, goodness, love and everlasting life.
Friday, August 31 ~ Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time
Holy Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13 Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The Kingdom of heaven will be like
ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five
were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought
flasks of oil with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell
asleep. At midnight, there was a cry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ Then all those
virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for
our lamps are going out.’ But the wise ones replied, ‘No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go
instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.’ While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom
came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked.
Afterwards the other virgins came and said, ‘Lord, Lord, open the door for us!’ But he said in reply,
‘Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the
hour.”
Meditation: Jesus’ story of ten single ladies waiting for a wedding procession in the middle of the night
seem strange to us today. But Jesus' audience knew all too well how easily this could happen to them. To
show up for a wedding party without proper attire and travel arrangements is like trying to get into a
special event today that requires a prearranged permit or reservation. You just don’t get in without the
proper pass. Can you imagine the frustration travelers might experience when going abroad and finding
out that they can’t get into some country because they don’t have the right visa or a valid passport?
Prayer: O God, who cause the minds of the faithful to unite in a single purpose, grant your people to love
what you command and to desire what you promise, that, amid the uncertainties of this world, our hearts
may be fixed on that place where true gladness is found. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who

Contemplation: Jesus warns us that there are consequences for being unprepared. When the Lord Jesus
comes to lead you to his heavenly banquet will you be ready to hear his voice and follow? Our eternal
welfare depends on our hearing, and many have trained themselves to not hear. We will not be prepared
to meet the Lord, face to face, when he calls us on the day of judgment, unless we listen to him today.
The Lord invites us to feast at his heavenly banquet table. The question is, are you ready?

The items most needed at the pantry are: canned veggies, fruit and soup.
The pantry has been very busy this summer! During the 23 services since June 1st, we have had 18 services of 30 or more families with three services in the 40s. The highest number of families served was 48. We have already served more families this summer than last summer and we still have the last week of August left. We have had to purchase quite a bit of food this summer. As school begins and families settle in for fall/winter, we will need to reach out to area churches asking for more food donations. I am sure we will receive the assistance that is needed to serve the many families in our district. Your prayers are needed to help us meet our families’ needs.

CLASSES FOR 2-3 YEAR OLDSWITH COMMUNICATION AND/OR SOCIALIZATION CHALLENGES
On September 11th, our school year program will resume at St. Edward Church for 2 and 3 year olds with communication and/or socialization challenges. The classes are tentatively scheduled from noon to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The children work in groups of 6 with two teachers; evidence-based “play” procedures are used to improve their communication and socialization skills.
FREE PROGRAM DURING THE SCHOOLYEAR FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH AUTISM
This program starts September 10th. Participants should have basic reading skills. They will work one-on-one with mentors in small groups on Mondays from 4:00-6:00 p.m. participating in noncompetitive physical activities including: “obstacle” courses, music, dancing, yoga, crafts, games, cooking, interviewing, drama, visiting restaurants and other places of interest in Granville, etc.
This program was created to improve social and communication skills, to allow for sensory issues and a child’s need for routine, to develop executive skills, and to reduce anxiety with new situations, new activities and new people.

CLOSER TO HOME… STEWARDSHIP AT ST. EDWARD
In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus continues His instruction on the Eucharist. Many of his own disciples cannot accept His teachings and instead return to their former way of life, abandoning Christ altogether. Jesus turns to the Apostles and asks them to choose with the question, “Do you also want to leave?” Peter speaks up for the Twelve responding, “Master, to Whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
The demands of a stewardship way of life can be diffi cult. And the teachings of Christ can be hard to accept. How can we keep going when it gets tough? Peter’s honest answer to the choice Jesus poses shows us a way to stay true to a stewardship way of life.
Looking at himself and the world around him, Peter comes to a realization. To paraphrase, he says, “I don’t really see any better options, Lord. I’ve tried life with you and it’s hard. But I’ve tried life without You and it’s harder — it doesn’t satisfy. Where else am I going to go? I choose You, Lord.” Peter knows he doesn’t have all the answers. And, so, he humbly chooses to rely on God. When the going gets tough, we can keep going by relying on God and trusting more deeply in Him.
