1. 2018 Bishops Annual Appeal Finale As of today (Wednesday) our total in pledges
is $237,000. Just in case any might still have an Appeal envelope (empty) please take this opportunity to make that pledge this week. I’m very grateful to all who participated this year at any level. This was another great year for us. Thanks so much.
2. I wanted to share my intention to stay on here for another year. Bishop Campbell’s policy is to allow that by seeking the pastor’s input. I’m hopeful that I’m still doing the job here satisfactorily and he has honored my wish to stay on until next year’s assignments and see where we are then. I’m most grateful for the support and kindness I experience here at St. Edward. Do keep me in your prayers.

CELEBRATING50 YEARS
SHARE YOUR FAITH, SUPPORT THE COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICANext week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. For many in
Latin America and the Caribbean, rural terrain and a lack of ministers are obstacles to practicing their faith. Your support to the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, as well as other programs to help share our faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. To learn more, please visit www.usccb.org/latin-america.
FOOD PANTRY COLLECTIONThe summertime high volume of families continues at the Food Pantry and we are in need of: mac & cheese, tuna, canned fruit, jelly and Hamburger Helper type meals. Also,
if you have children or grandkids who need volunteer hours this summer, have them call or email Chuck Dilbone at 740-877-8738 or [email protected] so they can schedule those hours. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
NOTES FROM THE LOFT This weekend, there are two prescribed options for
the Communion antiphon (see p. 195 in our hymnal). During Communion, we sing “Blest Are They” because its text incorporates one of the options – the passage from the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:7-8). We sing the second option (Psalm 103:2) as the recessional hymn, “O Bless the Lord, My Soul.” There are no prescribed texts for recessional music at Mass, so when multiple antiphons are provided elsewhere, we try to incorporate them as the closing hymn in this way whenever it is appropriate. Sometimes they are also the basis for preludes, postludes, or other instrumental music.
COME AND SING MASS – AUGUST 14: Adults and teens, if you want to give singing with the choir a try, you’re invited to come and sing for the 7:00 p.m. Assumption Vigil Mass on Tuesday, August 14. Meet on the loft at 6:00 p.m., and we’ll rehearse the music for the Mass, including a choir-only piece. You don’t need to read music or have any choral experience: just come and sing. No RSVP is required—we can accommodate a few dozen people on the loft.

THINKING ABOUT GODPARENTSFOR YOUR BABY?If you’re expecting a baby, you may already be thinking about Baptism and who your child’s godparents will be. Godparents are models of faith for their godchildren, so they must be Catholics who are at least sixteen years old, who have received Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, and who are actively living a life of faith. Children may have one male godparent, one female godparent, or one of each. A baptized person who is not Catholic may serve as a “Christian witness” at a Baptism, but that person is not formally recognized as a godparent by the Church. For more information about godparents and baptismal preparation, contact Cheryl Boggess in the Parish Office at 740-587-3254.

ST. EDWARD THE CONFESSOR CHURCH GRANVILLE, OHIO
SPONSOR OF THE WEEK:
Today’s Gospel reading recounts Jesus’ miracle of feeding the multitude. In a miracle that anticipated Jesus’ miracle of feeding the multitude, as reported in today’s Gospel, Elisha commanded that a small amount of bread be served to 100 men, and Jesus
promised that all would indeed be fed. Elisha trusted that promise, acted upon it, and saw the promise miraculously fulfilled. We, like most people, tend to forget the miracles our Lord can work in everyday life. If we trust in God and live as good stewards, what we accomplish is, in its own way, a miracle.
St. Paul beautifully sums up how our approach to living as Catholics and Christians should be. In today’s Second Reading from his letter to the Ephesians, Paul urges us to live “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit.” Does that describe our parish community?
This cannot happen unless we have the same kind of trust that Elisha had, and which St. Paul had, as well. Paul also says in today’s Second Reading, “I urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” This is stewardship at its core. We should not give of our time, talent and treasure because we want to earn God’s love. He already loves us unconditionally.
Jesus knew full well what miracle He was about to perform, but He also saw this as a chance to teach His Apostles, and also show us the way. Philip and the others had already seen Jesus perform many miracles, and there should have been no question in his mind about the divine resources Jesus had at His disposal. Yet Philip hesitated. It is human nature to be doubtful. Yet, as with Elisha, they all ate, and there was much left over. Through this miracle, Jesus is teaching us to trust Him and to do the same in our lives. And, by committing ourselves to a stewardship way of life, we can see our own gifts multiplied. And perhaps even perform our own modern-day miracles. – catholicsteward.org

BETHESDA HEALING MINISTRYSummer is here, we slow down our pace a bit to reflect on the mystery of Jesus and His wondrous gifts. If you have experienced abortion in your life and that memory is keeping you from enjoying the fruits of summer, perhaps it is time to open your spirit to the peace only Jesus can give you. We are a group of mothers and fathers who have suffered the experience of abortion. We gather twice a month to share, heal and grow. “We’ve been there. We understand. We invite you to join us.” Bethesda Healing Ministry meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month. Confidential Ministry phone lines are available to you, call us: 614-309-2651 or 614-309-0157 or visit our website at www.bethesdahealing.org.

"Take, O Lord, and receive my entire liberty, my memory, my understanding and my
whole will. All that I am and all that I possess You have given me: I surrender it all to You to be disposed of according to Your will. Give me only Your love and Your grace; with these I will be rich enough, and will desire nothing more.”
~THE ‘PRAYER OF SURRENDER’ OF SAINT IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA
Monday, July 30 ~ Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time
Saint Peter Chrysologus, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
Holy Gospel: Matthew 13:31-35 Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds. “The Kingdom of heaven is
like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when
full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the ‘birds of the sky come and dwell in
its branches.’” He spoke to them another parable. “The Kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman
took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened.” All these things
Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables. He spoke to them only in parables to fulfill what had been said
through the prophet: I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the
foundation of the world.
Meditation: What can mustard seeds and leaven teach us about the kingdom of God? The tiny mustard
seed literally grew to be a tree which attracted numerous birds because they loved the little black mustard
seed it produced. God's kingdom works in a similar fashion. It starts from the smallest beginnings in the
hearts of men and women who are receptive to God's word. And it works unseen and causes a
transformation from within. Leaven is another powerful agent of change. A lump of dough left to itself
remains just what it is, a lump of dough. But when the leaven is added to it a transformation takes place
which produces rich and wholesome bread when heated — the staple of life for humans. The kingdom of
God produces a transformation in those who receive the new life which Jesus Christ offers.
Prayer: O God, who made the Bishop Saint Peter Chrysologus an outstanding preacher of your incarnate
Word, grant, through his intercession, that we may constantly ponder in our hearts the mysteries of your
salvation and faithfully express them in what we do. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives
and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: When we yield our lives to Jesus Christ and allow his word to take root in our heart, we
are transformed and made holy by the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. Paul the Apostle says:
“We have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to
us: (2 Corinthians 4:7).Do you believe in the transforming power of the Holy Spirit?
About Saint Peter Chrysologus: Saint Peter Chrysologus earned the title of Doctor of the Church for his
eloquent sermons, of which some two hundred remain. Made Archbishop of Ravenna by miraculous
intervention of St. Peter in 433, he rooted out all remaining traces of paganism, as well as a number of
abuses among the Christians. In his sermons he strongly urged frequent Communion. He is supposed to
have given us the saying: "He who wants to laugh with the devil cannot rejoice with Christ." St. Peter died
about the year 450 in his native city of Imola.
Tuesday, July 31 ~ Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Priest; Founder, the Society of Jesus
Holy Gospel: Matthew 13:36-43 Jesus dismissed the crowds and went into the house. His disciples
approached him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field." He said in reply, "He who
sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the Kingdom. The
weeds are the children of the Evil One, and the enemy who sows them is the Devil. The harvest is the end
of the age, and the harvesters are angels. Just as weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be
at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his Kingdom all who
cause others to sin and all evildoers. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be
wailing and grinding of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father.
Whoever has ears ought to hear."
Meditation: There are different ways of accepting God's word and they produce different kinds of fruit
accordingly. There is the prejudiced hearer who has a shut mind. Such a person is unteachable and turns
a deaf ear to what they don't want to hear. Then there is the shallow hearer. He or she fails to think
things out or think them through; they lack depth. They may initially respond with an emotional reaction;
but when it wears off their mind wanders to something else. Another type of hearer is the person who has
many interests or cares, but who lacks the ability to hear or comprehend what is truly important. Such a
person is forever too busy to pray or too preoccupied to study and meditate and pray on God's word. He
or she may work so hard that they are too tired to even think of anything else but their work. Then there
is the one whose mind is open. Such a person is at all times willing to listen and to learn. He or she is
never too proud or too busy to learn. They listen in order to understand. God gives grace to those who
hunger for his word that they may understand his will and have the strength to live according to it. The
“evil one” refers to Satan who also tempts us with sowing his evil seed in our hearts and minds. The evil
one can also refer to those among us who promote ways that are contrary to that of Christ – those who
embrace contrary ways of living, far from the way that God has commanded and Christ has taught. Do
you embrace the laws of God and the teachings of Christ and His Church? Or do you embrace the ways of
the evil one, public opinion, the politically correct, that which may be popular, that which may be civilly
legal yet immoral in the eyes of God, and anything that is contrary to the truths of sacred scripture?
Prayer: O God, who raised up Saint Ignatius of Loyola in your Church to further the greater glory of your
name, grant that by his help we may imitate him in fighting the good fight on earth and merit to receive
with him a crown in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the
unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: Don’t be naive. An enemy exists who seeks to destroy the good seed of His word before
it can bear fruit. Both good and evil can be sown in our hearts like tiny seeds which germinate, and in due
time yield a harvest of good or bad fruit. We must stand guard lest evil take root in our hearts and corrupt
us. In the day of judgment each will reap what he or she has sown in this life. Those who sow good will
shine in the kingdom of their Father. They will radiate with the beauty, joy, and fullness of God’s love.
Wednesday, August 1 ~ Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time
St. Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop, Doctor of the Church; Founder, Redemptorists
Holy Gospel: Matthew 13:44-46 Jesus said to his disciples: “The Kingdom of heaven is like a treasure
buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and
buys that field. Again, the Kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a
pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.”
Meditation: Discovering God's kingdom is like stumbling across hidden treasure or finding the one pearl
of great price. When we discover the kingdom of God we receive the greatest possible treasure — the Lord
himself. Selling all that we have to obtain this incomparable treasure could mean many things — our
friends, job, our "style of life", what we do with our free time. Treasure has a special connection to the
heart, the place of desire and longing, the place of will and focus. The thing we most set our heart on is
our highest treasure. In this parable what does the treasure of the kingdom refer to? It certainly refers to
the kingdom of God in all its aspects. But in a special way, the Lord himself is the treasure we seek. If the
Almighty is your gold and your precious silver, then you will delight yourself in the Almighty (Job 22:22-
23). Is the Lord the treasure and delight of your heart?
Prayer: O God, who constantly raise up in your Church new examples of virtue, grant that we may follow
so closely in the footsteps of the Bishop Saint Alphonsus in his zeal for souls as to attain the same rewards
that are his in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity
of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: What do you treasure most and how do you keep it secure? In a peasant community the
best safe was often the earth. The man in the parable "went in his joy" to sell everything. Why? Because
he found a treasure worth possessing above everything else he had. He did not, however, have enough to
buy the treasure. Fortunately, he only needed enough money to buy the field. In a similar fashion, God
offers his kingdom as incomparable treasure at a price we can afford! We can't pay the full price for the
life which God gives us. But when we exchange our life for the life which God offers, we receive a treasure
beyond compare. So what is of greater value, then? The treasure of this earthly life? Or the treasure
that God makes available to us – the Lord himself!
Thursday, August 2 ~ Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time Saint Peter Julian Eymard, Priest; Founder, Congregation of the Bl. Sacrament
Holy Gospel: Matthew 13:47-53 Jesus said to the disciples: “The Kingdom of heaven is like a net
thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind. When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to
put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be at the end of the age. The
angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Do you understand all these things?” They answered,
“Yes.” And he replied, “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the Kingdom of heaven is like the
head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.” When Jesus finished these
parables, he went away from there.
Meditation: What can a story of a dragnet and a great catch of fish tell us about God's kingdom? The two
most common ways of fishing in Jesus' time was with a casting-net (or hand-net) which was thrown from
the shore and the drag-net or trawl which was let down or cast into the waters from a boat. As the boat
moved through the waters the drag-net was drawn into the shape of a great cone which indiscriminately
took in all kinds of fish and flotsam and jetsam swept in its path. It usually took several men to haul such
a net to shore. What is Jesus' point here? Just as a drag-net catches every kind of fish in the sea, so the
church acts as God's instrument for gathering in all who will come. Just as the drag-net does not or cannot
discriminate, so the church does not discriminate between the good and the bad, the useless and the
useful. God's kingdom is open to all who will accept and believe. But there will come a time of separation,
at the close of the age, when the angels will send the good and the bad to their respective destinations.
Prayer: O God, who adorned Saint Peter Julian Eymard with a wonderful love for the sacred mysteries of
the Body and Blood of your Son, graciously grant that we, too, may be worthy to receive the delights he
drew from this divine banquet. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in
the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: What is our duty in all of this? Our duty is rather simple – to gather in all who will come.
God, in the end, will give the good and the bad the reward they deserve. God offers the treasure of his
kingdom to all who believe. Do you hunger for God and his kingdom?
Friday, August 3 ~ Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time
Holy Gospel: Matthew 13:54-58 Jesus came to his native place and taught the people in their
synagogue. They were astonished and said, “Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is
he not the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and
Judas? Are not his sisters all with us? Where did this man get all this?” And they took offense at him. But
Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house.” And
he did not work many mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith.
Meditation: Are you critical towards others, especially those who are close to you? The most severe
critics are often people very familiar to us, a member of our family, a relative, neighbor, student, or
worker we rub shoulders with on a regular basis. Jesus faced a severe testing when he returned to his
home town, not simply as the carpenter's son, but now as a rabbi with disciples. But it was of not matter,
as the people of Nazareth took offense at him and refused to listen to what he had to say. They despised
his preaching because he was a carpenter from the working class, and a mere layman untrained by
religious scholars. They also despised him because of his family background. After all, Joseph was a
tradesman as well and Mary had no special social distinctions.
Prayer: O God, protector of those who hope in you, without whom nothing has firm foundation, nothing is
holy, bestow in abundance your mercy upon us and grant that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may
use the good things that pass in such a way as to hold fast even now to those that ever endure. Through
our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for
ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: How easily familiarity breeds contempt. Jesus could do no mighty works in his hometown
because the people who were familiar with him were closed-minded and despised his claim to speak and
act in the name of God. The Lord Jesus offers us freedom from sin, prejudice, contempt, and fear. His love
and grace sets us free to love others with the same grace and mercy which he has shown to us. Only
Jesus can truly set us free from the worst tyranny possible — slavery to sin and the fear of death. His
victory on the cross brings us pardon and healing, and the grace to live holy lives by the power of the Holy
Spirit. Do you know the joy and freedom which Christ's love brings to our hearts?
Saturday, August 4 ~ Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Saint John Vianney, Priest; Patron Saint of Priests
Holy Gospel: Matthew 14:1-12 Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus and said to his
servants, “This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are
at work in him.” Now Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias,
the wife of his brother Philip, for John had said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” Although he
wanted to kill him, he feared the people, for they regarded him as a prophet. But at a birthday celebration
for Herod, the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests and delighted Herod so much
that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for. Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here
on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and the
guests who were present, he ordered that it be given, and he had John beheaded in the prison. His head
was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. His disciples came and took
away the corpse and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.
Meditation: We’ve all felt haunted by a past failure or a guilty conscience. King Herod, the most powerful
and wealthy man in Judea, had everything he wanted, except a clear conscience and peace with God.
Herod had respected and feared John the Baptist as a great prophet and servant of God. John, however
did not fear to rebuke Herod for his adulterous relationship with his brother's wife. He ended up in prison
because of Herodias' jealousy. Herod, out of impulse and a desire to please his family and friends, had
John beheaded. Now his conscience is pricked when he hears that all the people are going to Jesus to
hear his message of repentance and to see his mighty works. Herod is now haunted by the thought that
the prophet he murdered might now be raised from the dead!
Prayer: Almighty and merciful God, who made the Priest Saint John Vianney wonderful in his pastoral
zeal, grant, we pray, that through his intercession and example we may in charity win brothers and sisters
for Christ and attain with them eternal glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and
reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
A prayer for priests (by Saint Teresa of Calcutta, “Mother Teresa”): Mary, Mother of Jesus, throw
your mantle of purity over our priests. Protect them, guide them, and keep them in your heart. Be a
Mother to them, especially in times of discouragement and loneliness. Love them and keep them
belonging completely to Jesus. Like Jesus, they, too, are your sons, so keep their hearts pure and virginal.
Keep their minds filled with Jesus, and put Jesus always on their lips, so that he is the one they offer to
sinner and to all they meet. Mary, Mother of Jesus, be their Mother, loving them and bringing them joy.
Take special care of sick and dying priests, and the ones most tempted. Remember how they spent their
youth and old age, their entire lives serving and giving all to Jesus. Mary, bless them and keep a special
place for them in your heart. Give them a piece of your heart, so beautiful and pure and immaculate, so
full of love and humility, so that they, too, can grow in the likeness of Christ. Dear Mary, make them
humble like you, and holy like Jesus. Amen.
Contemplation: Herod's power and influence was badly flawed. He could take a strong stand on the
wrong things when he knew the right. Such a stand, however, was a sign of weakness and cowardice.
Where do you get the strength of will and heart to choose what is right and to reject what is bad? The
Lord gives grace and help to the humble, to those who acknowledge their weaknesses and their
sinfulness, and who look to God for his mercy and pardon, wisdom and strength. His grace and pardon not
only frees us from a guilty conscience, it enables us to pursue holiness in every area of our lives, in our
thoughts and intentions as well as our words and actions. God's grace enables us to fight fear with faith
and to overcome the temptation to compromise good with evil. Do you rely on God's grace and help to
choose his way of holiness and to reject whatever would weaken your faith and loyalty to Christ?
