PRIMARY YOUTH FORMATION NEWS

Question: What does the “communion of saints”
mean?
1. Family Formation: (grades 4—6) Jan. 19th & 2. Family Mass: January 24th 3. Grades 4—6: please email your chapters 9—11 re-
views to the Faith Formation Office: [email protected]
Answer: The “communion of saints” is made up of all men who have placed their hope in Christ and belong to him through Baptism, whether they have already died or are still alive. Because in Christ we are one Body, we live in a communion that encompasses heaven and earth. [CCC 946—962]. The Church is larger and more alive than we think. Among her members are the living and the deceased (whether they are still undergoing a process of purification or are already in the glory of God), individuals known and unknown, great saints and inconspicuous per-sons. We can help one another beyond the grave. We can call on our patrons and favorite saints, but also our depart-ed relatives and friends whom we believe are already with God. Conversely, by our intercessory prayer, we can come to the aid of our dear departed whoa re still undergo-ing purification. Whatever the individual does or suffers in and for Christ benefits all. Conversely, this unfortunate-ly means that every sin harms the communion. (YOUCAT p. 91, 92)

Defending Our Religious Liberty
The Catholic Church is asking that the U.S. Supreme Court safe-
guard the rights afforded to us in the First Amendment of the U.S.
Constitution, so that we will have the freedom to serve the needy
without violating our moral principles and without being penal-
ized with fines.
If you haven’t done so already, please voice your opposition to
the federal health care mandate by calling U.S. Secretary of
Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell at 202-205-
5445, and your elected representatives. Let them know that the
mandate is in violation of our First Amendment right to religious
freedom.
Our sympathy to the family of:
RONALD PANIATI
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord; let your
perpetual light shine upon him forever.
If you enjoy singing at Mass, you may be interested in auditioning
to be a cantor! This is a paid position based on experience and
quality. You will work with Wendy, our new Director of Music.
Please see Father Mark if interested or for further details.

Q & A with Archbishop Leonard P. Blair
In Celebration of the Jubilee Year of Mercy
Question: When and why did the Holy Father declare a Jubilee
Year of Mercy?
Archbishop Blair: Pope Francis announced his intention to pro-
claim a Jubilee Year of Mercy during a Lenten penance service
in March, 2015. His stated purpose was for the Church to
“make more evident her mission to be a witness of mercy.”
Use of the Parking Lot
Now that St. Anthony Church Parking Lot is no longer a “commuter lot” the question has been asked as to whether the
parking area can be used by other organizations differing needs.
The answer is yes! Our parking lot is private and all requests for
use for such things as Bottle and Can Drives, overflow parking
for school or town activities, or individuals who may desire to
take a day “bus trip” are welcome to call the office.

Saint Anthony Church—December 20, 2015 Fourth Sunday of Advent
Pope Francis’ Prayer Intentions for December
His universal intention is: That all may experience the mercy of God, who never tires of forgiving.
His intention for evangelization is: That pastors of the Church, with profound love for their flock, may accompany them and enliven
their hope.
SOME ONE-LINERS TO PONDER
! Bible:
• Keep your Bible open and you will not find the door to
heaven closed.
• Knowing the Bible is of little benefit unless you practice it.
• Should all the people dust off their Bibles, we would have
one of the greatest dust storms of all time.
• The Bible is like a compass—it always points the believer in
the right direction.
• Trying to do away with the truth of the Bible is like trying to
mop the ocean dry with a sponge.
! Children:
• Anyone who sleeps like a baby doesn’t have a baby.
• Better to bring the children to church and hear them cry
there than to leave them at home and later cry in court.
• What on earth will today’s younger generation tell their
children they had to do without?
• Teaching smaller children may focus on four-letter words
such as duty, work, earn, give, and love.
• Perfect age for children—when they are old enough to shov-
el snow, but not old enough to drive.

TO THOSE WHO HAVE LOST
A LOVED ONE THIS YEAR …
My First Christmas in Heaven
I see countless Christmas trees around the world below,
with tiny lights like heaven’s stars reflecting on the snow.
The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away your tears,
for I am sharing Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear,
but sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir here.
I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring,
it’s far beyond description, to hear the angels sing.
I know how much you miss me, I see the pain within your heart,
but I am not far away—we really aren’t apart!
So be happy for me loved ones, you know I hold you dear,
and be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year!
I send you each a special gift from my heavenly home above,
I send you each a memory of my undying love.
After all “LOVE” is the gift more precious than pure gold,
it was always most important in the stories Jesus told.
Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to do,
for I can’t count the blessings or the love he has for you!
So have a Merry Christmas, and wipe away those tears,
for I am sharing Christmas with Jesus this year!

From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners:
This week ends our very brief Advent Season and the world pre-
pares more ardently to receive its Savior. What a quiet, holy mir-
acle this is! In the simple holy darkness of morning, in the twi-
light of innocence, God becomes a human being. The incarnate
Word becomes flesh! As John the Baptist pointed the way to
Christ, Christ now points the way for us. God blesses all that is
truly and authentically human and raises humanity to a level nev-
er witnessed before. The incarnation is nothing more than God
infusing something (or someone) human with the Divine.
If we stop to look and listen, we can realize that God accomplish-
es this miracle everyday of our lives. When we love, is it not God
loving through us? When we have faith, is it not God infusing
our hearts with trust? When we have hope, is it not God’s very
presence providing energy; prompting us to take action? Trans-
formation and miracles happen every day. Peoples’ lives are
changed when we open ourselves to the incarnate Word and allow
ourselves to be used as instruments of the Divine Will. Healing of the wounds of body, mind and spirit can occur and do.
If we believe in God’s incarnate power in human history, present
moments and future realities, then why is it so difficult to believe
in that same presence in the Eucharist we celebrate so frequent-
ly? Is it that far fetched to think that God can take simple ele-ments of bread and wine and transform them, wholly and com-
pletely, into the Body and Blood of Christ? This action is no
more symbolic than the love that exists in my heart. It is real!
This is not just a simple gesture of remembrance or play acting in
a game of “make believe.” It is God with us in no less a way than
God came that first Christmas night!
This is my Body. This is my Blood. God tells us, at every Eu-
charist, I am real! I am here! I am no less than I have been in the
past, am here today and will be in the future! This is my Body,
which is broken for YOU. This is my Blood, which is shed for
YOU. Do we think so little of ourselves that we cannot believe
that God can and does come to us in this way? Every Eucharist is
a testament to the truth of the first Christmas. It is in the Eucha-
ristic Christ that all of history, all present moments, all to become
in the future finds its meaning and point of focus. When we re-
ceive Holy Communion we are brought, in a tangible and real
way, into the mystery and love of the first Christmas. We are
united with the Word made flesh.
As we receive Jesus in the Eucharist or gaze upon a crèche, let
our prayer be honest and simple: “Lord, I believe. Increase my
faith.” Ask and you shall receive. Merry Christmas!
