A Dawning Epiphany

“It suddenly dawned on me!” We have all had experiences when, on hearing a joke, we laugh along with everyone else at the punch line, only at some later moment to actually “get” the joke. We feign understanding so that no one will think less of us. Having something suddenly dawn on us is very much like what we celebrate today. The Church’s yearly celebration of Epiphany is a reminder and an elaboration of what we celebrated at the feast of Christmas—just in case we didn’t get it the first time. Today’s “punch line” is contained in the second reading, where Saint Paul writes, “It was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel” (Ephesians 3:5–6).

Cultivating Expectation

Some non-Catholics complain that our religious expression is dull and boring. They might ask, “How can you say the same prayers week after week—doesn’t it just put you to sleep?” Our three-year cycle of readings, our codified prayers, and our liturgical calendar continue to repeat over and over again throughout our Catholic journey of faith. Today’s feast reminds us that all along the way, epiphanies can pop up out of nowhere. A prayer or reading that washed over us last week or last year suddenly has a tremendous impact and reveals God’s presence in our lives. This happens because it is we who are different each time we come to Mass. We should cultivate an attitude of expectation, just as the three magi did. They followed the star expecting to find the Savior of the world. Let us be ready to welcome the Savior today and each day of our lives. Copyright © 2007, World Library Publications. Around

the Parish... LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW

It’s Our Quarter and Can Collection Weekend

and opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. All canned goods, soap, and paper products will be sent to CCSA. Religious Education

Religious Education classes will resume Sunday, January 19, 2020.

Eucharistic Adoration

The Gospel is full of examples when Jesus found time in the midst of a racing agenda to stop the rush and sit in silence and pray, do you think you should too? Remember there isn’t a beatitude which reads, “Blessed are the busy.” So slow down and join your fellow parishioners in adoration in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel and enjoy the silent time with your Lord and Savior. Come for an hour or simply drop by whenever convenient for personal prayer with Our Lord. Eucharistic Adoration is held every Friday from 1 to 5 p.m.

If you have a loved one who is incapacitated and cannot attend Mass and would like to receive the Holy Eucharist at home, please contact the parish office at (619) 276-1041 or Deacon Ralph at (858) 776-7151.

2020 Calendars are available in the vestibule of the church.

Stewardship in the New Year

“Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Otherwise, after laying the foundation and being unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh and say, ‘This one began to build, but did not have the resources to finish.” Luke 14:28-30 So it is with stewardship. We make a personal commitment to put God first and reorder our priorities based on what we believe. Here are some stewardship resolutions to consider when laying a foundation for the New Year:

Stewardship to your God: Prayer

Stewardship to your country: Voting

Stewardship to your children: A Solid Education

Stewardship to your heirs: A Properly Executed Will

Stewardship to your parish: Full Participation

Stewardship to your diocese: The 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal

Stewardship to yourself: Exercise & Healthy Diet
