From the Desk of Father Jonathan

The phones at the Parish Center have been ringing off the hook with parishioners offering to sponsor different aspects of our church, as we refurbish and beautify it. I am so impressed by the love that you all have for Mt. Carmel and your commitment to making her strong for many years to come, even through considerable sacrifice on your part. Thank you! We need the help! Keep Calling! Keep stopping by the office! All I ask is that each of us take time to discern seriously what God is asking of us with respect to our common responsibility of doing and financing this very needed project. On another note, now that we are down in Fatima Chapel until September 2nd for all of our masses, I want to encourage everyone to maintain the same silence and reverence in Fatima Chapel as we showed in the main church. Since we are used to having social activities in this space, it is easy to forget that it is now a sacred space, with the pres-ence of Jesus in the tabernacle. Fatima Chapel will be open all day for private prayer, just as our church usually is. Come find quiet and talk to Jesus.

God bless,

Father Jonathan

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD

THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM This seventh Sunday of Easter is somewhat like the proverbial “calm before the storm.” The Lord Jesus has ascended into heaven and Pentecost has not yet occurred. Rather than immediately taking up Jesus’ command to go out to all the nations, the disciples gather in the upper room “with some women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers” (Acts 1:14). There they all devote themselves to prayer. The Gospel recounts the great prayer for the disciples that Jesus offered to his Father in heaven. If the words of Jesus while he was on earth finally began to sink in for the disciples, then gathering to pray was certainly the right choice, for the second reading lets us all know that to follow Christ means to have a share in his sufferings.

© la chiesa.it

Assisted Suicide - Tuesday May 30th Prayer

It is critical for all of us to be praying fervently, fasting, and offering sacrifices on Tues, May 30th asking the Blessed Mother to intercede to protect us from the

legalization of Assisted Suicide in NY State. Oral arguments will take place in the afternoon of May

30, and a decision may soon follow in June.
