IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY AUGUST 25, 2019
From the Pastor’s Desk
This Tuesday I will get a call from my classmate, Fr. Robert Dunn. Every year, he reminds me of the day we entered St. Joseph’s Seminary together. Besides telling me that it will now be thirty one years ago, he will also add, “It was on the feast of St Monica (August 27) when we began, and your mother cried!” The reference he is making of course is that St. Monica spent many years praying and crying for her son St. Augustine’s conversion. There’s a story told that when she took counsel with the local bishop about her wayward son, the bishop said to her “Go, I beg you, the son of so many tears cannot perish!” When she was close to death in 387, at the time living just outside of Rome, she overheard her sons talking about bringing her body back to North Africa for burial where she had lived with her family. Augustine re-counted her words in his book, The Confessions: “Son, as far as I am concerned, nothing in this life now gives me any pleasure. I do not know why I am still here, since I have no further hopes in this world... I did have one reason for wanting to live a little longer: to see you be-come a Catholic Christian before I died. God has lavished his gifts on me in that respect, for I know that you have even renounced happiness here on earth to be his servant. So what am I doing here?" About five days later before she died, she said "Bury my body anywhere you wish. Do not let care about it disturb you. I ask only this: that you remember me at the altar of the Lord, wherever you may be." We honor St Monica today as the patron of wives and of abuse victims. (Indeed, through her intercession, may all victims of abuse find the healing and comfort they need and the justice they deserve.) St. Monica pray for us! As you know, Augustine went on to become one of the most brilliant and influential Doctors of the church. An incredible mind, a pastoral heart and a fearless follower of Christ, he blessed the body of Christ for generations to come with his helpful teachings, his sermons, writings and pastoral care of souls as the Bishop of Hippo in North Africa. As you might imagine, he is the patron saint of theologians. One of my fa-vorite writings of Augustine also comes from his spiritual autobiog-raphy, The Confessions. (In reality, this book is more than an autobiog-raphy, it is the pursuit of a soul in search of holy truth, in search of God. I remember my philosophy teacher in college highlighting the book and remarking that this is the kind of book one has to read several times). Here is the quote I like best, I am sure you may know it and like it as well:
Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you! You were within me, but I was outside, and it was there that I searched for you.
In my unloveliness I plunged into the lovely things which you created. You were with me, but I was not with you.
Created things kept me from you; yet if they had not been in you they would not have been at all. You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness.
You flashed, you shone, and you dispelled my blindness. You breathed your fragrance on me;
I drew in breath and now I pant for you. I have tasted you, now I hunger and thirst for more.
You touched me, and I burned for your peace.
St Augustine, pray for us!
PRO LIFE CORNER The question is not “When can a baby live outside the womb?” – the question is “When can a baby be allowed to live inside the womb?

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY
This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical
Sunday on September 15. The theme is “Stay with
Us.”
One of Mother Teresa's favorite prayers by Blessed John Henry Newman:
Dear Jesus, help me to spread Your fragrance everywhere I go.
Flood my soul with Your spirit and life. Penetrate and possess
my whole being so utterly, That my life may only be a radiance of Yours.
Shine through me, and be so in me That every soul I come in contact with
May feel Your presence in my soul. Let them look up and see no longer me,
but only Jesus!
Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as You shine,
So to shine as to be a light to others; The light, O Jesus will be all from
You; none of it will be mine; It will be you, shining on others through me.
Let me thus praise You the way You love best, by shining on those around me.
Let me preach You without preaching, not by words but by my example,
By the catching force of the sympathetic influence of what I do,
The evident fullness of the love my heart bears to You.
