RELGIOUS EDUCATION CHRISTMAS PAGEANT There was a Christmas Pageant on Monday, De-cember 16 in IHM Auditorium. Students from Mrs. Riccairdi’s third grade class & Mrs. Nicholson’s second grade class participated in this wonderful event.

From the Pastor’s Desk
Fourth Sunday of Advent! Wow! And now Christmas around the corner! Tem-pus fugit! I hope and pray that these last few days before Christmas are days of joy and peace rather than stress and chaos. I look forward to seeing all of our parishion-ers and guests at our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day celebrations. May the bless-ing of the Christ child enrich us and transform us into God’s holy people. Here are two great quotes from the heroic, Lutheran pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer from Germa-ny who died in a Nazi concentration camp bearing witness to Christ and inspiring hope in his fellow victims of injustice and cruelty:
“The lack of mystery in our modern life is our downfall and our poverty. A human life is worth as much as the respect it holds for the mystery. We retain the child in us to the ex-tent that we honor the mystery. Therefore, children have open, wide-awake eyes, because they know that they are surrounded by the mystery. They are not yet finished with this world; they still don’t know how to struggle along and avoid the mystery, as we do. We destroy the mystery because we sense that here we reach the boundary of our being, be-cause we want to be lord over everything and have it at our disposal, and that’s just what we cannot do with the mystery…. Living without mystery means knowing nothing of the mystery of our own life, nothing of the mystery of another person, nothing of the mystery of the world; it means passing over our own hidden qualities and those of others and the world. It means remaining on the surface, taking the world seriously only to the extent that it can be calculated and exploited, and not going beyond the world of calculation and exploitation. Living without mystery means not seeing the crucial processes of life at all and even denying them.” “God travels wonderful ways with human beings, but he does not comply with the views and opinions of people. God does not go the way that people want to prescribe for him; rather, his way is beyond all comprehension, free and self-determined beyond all proof. Where reason is indignant, where our nature rebels, where our piety anxiously keeps us away: that is precisely where God loves to be. There he confounds the reason of the rea-sonable; there he aggravates our nature, our piety—that is where he wants to be, and no one can keep him from it. Only the humble believe him and rejoice that God is so free and so marvelous that he does wonders where people despair, that he takes what is little and lowly and makes it marvelous. And that is the wonder of all wonders, that God loves the lowly…. God is not ashamed of the lowliness of human beings. God marches right in. He chooses people as his instruments and performs his wonders where one would least ex-pect them. God is near to lowliness; he loves the lost, the neglected, the unseemly, the ex-cluded, the weak and broken.”

RETIRED RELIGIOUS SECOND COLLECTION Today, our parish will take up the annual archdi-ocesan collection for the thousands of retired Catholic sisters and brothers whose hard work, prayers, and sacrifices helped build our Catholic schools, hospitals, and charitable agencies. These dedicated women and men gave- and give- their lives in extraordinary and exemplary ser-vice to the archdiocese, and now, as they move into their senior years, we are able to offer them in return our love and support through this an-nual collection that helps to provide for their needs. Please do whatever you can to assist our retired religious.
MIDNIGHT RUN GIFT CARDS The Gift for those who have everything…and want to help those with less. Each is a beautiful art card telling the recipient that you have donated items (socks or blankets) in their name to Midnight Run which will be distributed to our homeless broth-ers and sisters on the streets of NYC. MEN’S ANNUAL SPIRITUAL RETREAT A joint venture of the Holy Name Societies of IHM, Annunciation, and Our Lady of Fatima is sponsoring the Annual Holy Name Retreat on the weekend of Friday, Jan. 31 - Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020. All men (inside and outside of the parish) are invited to take part in this spiritual renewal. It tarts with dinner at 6PM Friday and ends Sunday with lunch. Total cost is $250 per person, which includes all meals, refreshments, and single occupancy rooms for both nights. It is being held at the Don Bosco Retreat House (174 Filors Lane, Stony Point, NY). Msgr. Dermot Brennan will facilitate the retreat talks, and Fr. Matthew Ernest from St. Joseph’s Seminary will also provide valuable insights.
