Being His friend. Sometimes we run into scripture that confuses us. Take for instance Jesus' words: You are

my friends if you do what I command you. Wait! Doesn't scripture teach us that Christ loves us even when we fail to obey Him? Certainly, but this seemingly harsh scripture points us to an outsider's view of Christians. As we have often heard: They will know we are Christians by our love. We will be seen as "friends" of Christ by the world when we are obedient, good servants to Him. Standing up for justice, caring for the homeless, supporting Christian ministries, providing learning and recreational places for the poor, comforting the sick, and making certain that children are treated with love, respect, and dignity... all these actions prove that we are Christ's friends because we have done what Christ has asked of us. What proof of your friendship have you offered the world this week?

Love, then obedience. It is not that we keep His commandments first, and then He loves; but instead

HE loves us first, and then we keep His commandments. This is God's merciful grace, which is revealed to the humble, but hidden from the proud. (St. Augustine)

Rules to make life better. God's commands are not heavy to bear, if we truly love Him. Diligent obedience

lightens our hearts, letting our soul soar higher to lose itself in the love of God. It is, instead, the heavy burden of sin and guilt that drags us down in life. If we are willing to shuck off that load of selfishness, willfulness or laziness, we will find each day's road shortened by the lightness of our step. God has given us rules to make life better, not worse, like the safety instructions on a kerosene lamp. Obey the rules, and we have a light to guide us. Refuse and we may burn our shelters to the ground.

We would like to thank the 32 volunteers that helped serve The Banquet this past week at Trinity Lutheran Church. We could not have done this without all of you. You are appreciated.

Stewardship Thoughts: Giving of our time, talent and treasure mainly involves a change of attitude about giving. It is important to think in terms of giving in gratitude to God, of considering how blessed we are, and of using our gifts and talents for the good of others.Vocation Views: "God shows no partiality." He does not call those who are equipped for the work; He equips those whom He has called. (Acts 10:34)

The Holy Father Speaks...We are called to pray for the grace to be able to discern between good and bad curiosities and to open one's heart to the Holy Spirit who gives certainty in life. Life is full of curiosities and we need to be able to differentiate between the good and bad ones. Children's inquisitiveness is healthy, because as they grow up they notice things they don't understand and seek an explanation. This developes autonomy and is also a "contemplative curiosity" because children see, contemplate, do not understand and ask. On the other hand, gossip is a bad curiosity, as it is being nosey about the life of others that ends up dirtying others, making people understand things that they do not have the right to know. This kind of bad curiosity "accompanies our lives and is a temptation that we will always have." However, there is nothing to be frightened of but one must be careful. There are many curiosities, for example, in the virtual world, with moble phones and other things. There is no discipline in that curiosity, and adults need to help young people live in this world. On the other hand, the curiosity of the apostles in the Gospel is healthy because they wanted to know what will happen and Jesus responded by giving them a certainty that "never deceives", promising them the Holy Spirit who brings certainty in our life, but not like a bundle of certainties. As we proceed in life and ask the Holy Spirit to open our hearts, the Holy Spirit gives us the certainty for that moment, the answer for that moment. The Holy Spirit is the companion on the journey of a Christian. The companion of memory leads to fixed happiness and does not move. Go where there is true joy with the Holy Spirit, who helps them not make mistakes.

SPRING RCIA SESSION(Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

Do you want to learn more about your Catholic faith? Are you interested in joining the Catholic Church? Were you baptized Catholic, but didn’t receive the Sacraments of Eucharist, Reconciliation and/or Confirmation? This spring, our parish is offering a “Fast Track” Seminar which is specifically geared toward individuals who have a basic understanding of the Catholic Faith and would like to explore the possibility of making a formal commitment to the Church. The first session will be Sunday, May 6 at 5:00 p.m. We will meet from 5:00-6:15 p.m. and continue from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m., with 6:30 p.m. Mass in between the two sessions. We will meet over the course of six weeks and celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation for those that are ready over the summer. For more information or to register for these sessions, please contact Tracy in the parish office at 255-4600.

Marriage Moments: On May 10th, Christians celebrate Jesus' Ascension into heaven 40 days after Easter. But what does it mean to ascend into heaven? What does it mean to watch a beloved spouse leave for another life after death? These are heavy things to ponder. Talk with your beloved about what you believe about an afterlife.

Parenting Pointers: I challenged families to unplug for a day. Whether you did this or not, ask your family if they are willing to free themselves of digital devices (with the exception of work or school) for one full week. Experiment with human or outdoor entertainment. (Susan Vogt....www.SusanVogt.net)

Sunday, May 06, 2018SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTERThe age of idolsCelebrity rules. Or so it seems. Every headline, photo shoot, andnews crawl seeks to remind us that no matter what we’re doing atthe moment, someone’s living a reality that is so much cooler. We may secretly desire to be one of the beautiful people, to tastethe sweetness of that success. Consider that folks who docommand a high public profile like Pope Francis, ArchbishopDesmond Tutu, and the Dalai Lama have all repeated that theyare mere mortals, doing nothing more than we all should bedoing. Want fame? Pursue sainthood.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48; 1 John 4:7-10; John15:9-17 (56). “Peter, however, raise him up, saying, ‘Get up. Imyself am also a human being.’”

Monday, May 07, 2018EASTER WEEKDAYCome stay at my houseGod has bestowed so many gifts on creation. In fact, the world ishere in the first place because God’s love overflowed—Godwanted to share the divine love. God even sent Jesus and becamehuman so as to invite people more deeply into life in God. Soshouldn’t the response to all this generosity be a generous one inwhich we welcome God into our lives, are open and inviting withGod in prayer, and honor and care for our world and itscreatures? Start opening doors today.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 16:11-15; John 15:26-16:4a (291). “If youhave judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay at myhome.”

Tuesday, May 08, 2018EASTER WEEKDAYMake way for the SpiritMuch has been written about the importance of a “ministry ofpresence”—of being with people in times of need. Important aspresence is, there is also a “ministry of absence,” said notedspirituality author Henri Nouwen. We should never forget that itis the Holy Spirit ultimately who brings healing and comfort topeople and that we need to trust God to do the work that onlyGod can do in human hearts. There came a time when the risenChrist had to depart, but with assurances the Holy Spirit would bewith us always. Sometimes your absence serves in a way yourpresence can’t.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 16:22-34; John 16:5-11 (292). “But I tellyou the truth, it is better for you that I go.”

Wednesday, May 09, 2018EASTER WEEKDAYWhen Christians are in the marginsOften in stories of the church, both ancient and modern, you hearin the headlines about the scoffers. The anonymous faithful arerelegated to the margins and the footnotes. “Is God dead?” thecover of Time magazine inquired funereally in bold red letters ona stark black background in 1966. It would hardly make the backpage to reply: Not in the hearts and lives of believers. The pagesof the New Testament are sprinkled liberally with folks who

encountered Jesus or the apostles and came to faith. Good newstravels quietly. Make a little noise with yours.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 17:15, 22-18:1; John 16:12-15 (293). “Somebegan to scoff [at Paul] . . . . But some did join him, and becamebelievers.”

Thursday, May 10, 2018SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD; HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION (INSOME AREAS)Reading the signsSigns are not destinations. They may assist us in getting wherewe’re going, tell how far we’ve come or what to do next, butthey’re not intended to be goals in themselves. Early Christiansviewed certain signs as indicators of spiritual authority: the abilityto heal, inspired speech, command of dark forces, or facingdangers without harm. Saint Paul warned us not to becomeenchanted with power for its own sake. Instead, we shouldconsider the needs of the community and how best to serve.Name some modern signs that someone is demonstrating withgenuine spiritual authority.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 1:1-11; Ephesians 1:17-23 or 4:1-13; Mark16:15-20 (58). “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking uptoward heaven?”

Friday, May 11, 2018EASTER WEEKDAYThen, now, and laterFaith can seem like a time-travel video game. We look to the past, but the past is also present, and the present always looks to thefuture (for an example, think of the Mass). We learn the kingdomof God is within and among us—but not yet fulfilled. We worshipand follow a Lord who appeared in human flesh, left in body butremained in Spirit, and will come again to usher us into theeternal. No wonder we get a little lost sometimes! Here’s yourcompass: The world is broken but God still thinks it’s good.Through Jesus, God calls us to help restore that goodness in wayslarge and small. And, finally, one day that work will be done.

Saturday, May 12, 2018MEMORIALS OF NEREUS AND ACHILLEUS, MARTYRSStrike a blow for peaceIn the early years of the church it was a matter of debate whetherChristians should belong to the Roman army, although many did.Two of the martyrs remembered today, Nereus and Achilleus, were members of the elite Praetorian Guard, but after theybecame Christians they refused to serve and were eventuallyexiled and executed. At the end of the fourth century PopeDamasus had an inscription made in their honor, which read inpart: “O miracle of faith! . . . they become converted . . . theythrow away their shields, their armor, and their blood-stainedjavelins. Confessing the faith of Christ, they rejoice to beartestimony to its triumph.” What bold and perhaps risky paths canyou take to live out what you believe?
