Who could, could you? It’s easy to look at the act of the Good Samaritan as a sort of “emergency

roadside assistance.” Of course we would help someone bleeding and beaten on the side of the road. We don’t have hearts of stone. Who could pass by such suffering? But the suffering souls we pass may not be so obvious. Their tears may be internal, their sighs almost silent. The blood staining their clothes may be from the wounds of weariness or loneliness, not a knife or a gun. It takes a closer look, a more tender heart to see the suffering that today’s world serves up. These souls need solace as much as the beaten man did, and today’s Samaritan must learn to see with God’s eyes. Look around your community today. Are there families without food, children without schoolbooks, mothers to be without medical care? Do the incurably ill suffer alone? These wounded souls stand by the roadside of our lives today watching as the world passes by. Will you?

Guidelines When Nearing the End of Life

The Catholic Church is concerned for those who are ill and dying. The Church desires that they receive prayers and support as death draws near. You may call the Church of Corpus Christi parish office at 255-4600 to request the Anointing of the Sick in your home or at the hospital. You may also wish to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and receive the Eucharist and you can request these Sacraments as well. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, reception of these three sacraments complete the earthly pilgrimage and prepare us for our heavenly homeland.

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, designated December 8, 2015 through Nov 20, 2016 as a Jubilee Year, a Holy Year of Mercy throughout the Church. As part of this, a “Door of Mercy” was opened on December 13 in several locations throughout the Bismarck Diocese: St. Joseph in Williston; St. Leo the Great in Minot; St. Mary’s in Richardton at Assumption Abbey; and Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Bismarck. All Catholics who make a visit to one of these churches and its Holy Door of Mercy on pilgrimage and who fulfill the conditions ordinarily attached to an indulgence (remission of temporal punishment for sins already forgiven) shall, with the proper intention and disposition, receive the Plenary Jubilee Indulgence available during the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. The conditions for receiving this plenary indulgence are:

1. Must be a baptized Catholic in the state of grace (free from mortal sin) at time of indulgenced work (pilgrimage).

2. Must internally express a detachment from and rejection of sin at time of indulgenced work (pilgrimage).

3. Must make a sacramental confession within several days before or after the time of indulgenced work (pilgrimage).

4. Must receive Holy Communion within several days before or after the time of indulgenced work (pilgrimage).

5. Must pray for the intention of the Holy Father at the time of the indulgenced work (pilgrimage) fully satisfied by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary; nevertheless, one has the option of reciting any other prayer according to individual piety and devotion, if recited for this intention.

Anyone with questions regarding the Holy Door of Mercy or the receipt of the Plenary Jubilee Indulgence should contact one of the parish priests.

Vocation Views: We are called to love with our whole being. Is God inviting you to love through ministry to the Church? Pray for generosity to serve God’s people. (Luke 10:38-42)

BUT WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?

Millions of people in the world today can identify themselves as Christians at thousands of churches spread across the globe. When one looks at the different and sometimes conflicting tenets propagated by these followers of Jesus it is apparent that not everybody who professes to be Christian truly knows Jesus. This book, But Who Do You Say That I Am?, by Fr. Raphael M. Obotama, interrogates the individual’s relationship with Christ in the context of

a personal answer to this question. Some people only follow Jesus the miracle worker, who turned water into wine, and run away from Jesus the suffering servant, who cried aloud on the cross in the midst of excruciating suffering.

Anyone interested in purchasing this book please call Fr. Raphael on his cell phone at 205-332-9051.

Divine Mercy Videos

We will offer an opportunity to view Father Michael Gaitley’s 10 week video series on Divine Mercy. This is the video series offered on the FORMED website. For questions please contact Cindy or Mary in the Church of Corpus Christi parish office at 255-4600.

The Holy Father Speaks...Mercy is not an abstract concept but a lifestyle that invites Christians to make an examination of conscience and ask themselves if they place the spiritual and material needs of others before their own. A Christian who chooses to be merciful experiences true life and has “eyes to see, ears to listen, and hands to comfort”. That which makes mercy alive is its constant dynamism to go out searching for the needy and the needs of those who are in spiritual or material hardship. By being indifferent to the plight of the poor and suffering, Christians turn into “hypocrites” and move toward a “spiritual lethargy that numbs the mind and makes life barren”. People who go through life, who walk in life without being aware of the needs of others, without seeing the many spiritual and material needs are people who do not live. They are people who do not serve others. And remember this well: One who does not live to serve, serves nothing in life. Those who have experienced the mercy of God in their own lives must not remain insensitive to the needs of others. Look at Jesus; look at Jesus in the hungry, in the prisoner, in the sick, in the naked, in the person who does not have a job to support his family. Look at Jesus in these brothers and sisters of ours. Look at Jesus in those who are alone, sad, in those who make a mistake and need advice, in those who need to embark on the path with him in silence so they may feel accompanied. These are the works that Jesus asks of us; To look at Jesus in them, in these people. Why? Because Jesus also looks at me, looks at you, in that way.

Marriage Moments: “Be your partner’s cheerleader, not his/her teacher, supervisor or critic. This creates a partnership rather than a hierarchy.” (Trudy Costa, “How to Create a Satisfying, Lasting Marriage”)Parenting Pointers: “...love your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27) - It’s a familiar verse; perhaps so familiar we take it for granted. How do I love myself? (Do I take care of my health, my mind?...) Help your children identify their strengths today. Not just general strengths. Be specific. Later you can go on to apply this to your neighbors. ...Susan Vogt at www.SusanVogt.net

Remember in PrayerThe parish has a list of people that wish to be prayed for during our weekend liturgies. Their names are posted on the wall in the upper gathering space of the church and also read by the deacons at the weekend masses. The names will remain on the prayer list for 30 days unless you call before that time to have them removed. If you want your name to remain on the list after 30 days have passed, please contact the parish office to have your name or the name of your loved one added again. Thank you.

FAITH FORMATION OFFICE VOLUNTEERSWe are looking for volunteers to help out in our Faith Formation office during the day time hours. Some responsibilities may include copying, typing, restoring of classrooms, getting materials ready for the next classes and preparing for special events. Scheduling is flexible and can be tailored to your skills and abilities. Please contact Mariah at 255-4600 to find out what might appeal to you.

FOOD PANTRY NEEDS FOR THE MONTH OF JULY

PEANUT BUTTER AND

CANNED FRUIT

During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, author Mike Pacer has introduced the book “MERCY AND HOPE”. We need hope in our world. Flowing forth from the Heart of Jesus is a torrent of mercy that is the source of this much needed hope. Discover how in God’s mercy we find a reason for joy here on earth and a reasonable

expectation for eternal joy in Heaven. Mike’s engaging and straightforward approach sheds on the following: -The merciful and loving God revealed in the Old Testament -Jesus Christ as the source of mercy and reason for hope -The hope imparted through the message of Divine Mercy given to St. Faustina -Mary’s role as the Mother of Mercy and Hope

Hope is not merely a feeling, but also an action through which our lives are transformed. Mike provides practical suggestions on how we can live more joyful lives through being merciful to others and receiving mercy ourselves.

This book and others can be found on the book rack downstairs in the lower gathering space.A $3.00 donation is suggested for each CD/book to help us continue this program.

Congratulations to Samantha Fettig and Jason Conzemius who were married Saturday, July 9. May God richly bless their marriage. May they feel the support and encouragement of the Corpus Christi community.
