CHURCH MUSIC SYLLABUS (Updated: 2021)

Page 2: CHURCH MUSIC SYLLABUS

1 SAKOV – CHURCH MUSIC SYLLABUS 2021

GENERAL

1. This syllabus aims at training organists in the general abilities expected from church musicians. Scope is

provided for the inclusion of all christian denominations in Southern Africa.

2. Practical abilities include the progressive development of keyboard and pedal playing in the context of

hymn playing, technical tasks, and repertoire as prescribed for each exam. Attention is also given to the

creation of introductions, trio-playing and the gathering of knowledge with regards to different

accompaniment styles.

3. Each examination consists of four sections: hymn playing, technical ability, repertoire and viva voce

questions/essays.

4. Church hymns harmonised in a “chorale style” in 3 or 4parts, will hereforth be referred to as “hymns”.

Liturgical songs in a different style (eg. contemporary liturgical songs) will be referred to as “songs”. The

chosen hymn book/accompanist’s book/songbook will be referred to as the “hymnal”. The term cantus

firmus refers to the hymn melody.

5. The hymns and songs must be played with good musical understanding, at a tempo and with phrasing

in accordance with the character of the text and the specific function it is to fulfill in the litrugy. To

underline and ensure the importance of excellent hymn playing, it is a requirement that the candidate

achieve a minimum of 60% in Section A (hymn playing) in order to successfully pass the examination as

a whole.

6. Hymns chosen for the first examination may be repeated in the Second examination. From the Third

examination onwards no more repetition of the chosen hymns will be allowed for succeeding

examinations, except if their harmonisation is different. The candidate must compile a repertoire list of

hymns and songs, containing all the works presented at the present and previous examinations. The

examiner will check and undersign this list.

7. The candidate may choose hymns and songs from any official hymnal or songbook. Chorale preludes

which are not included in the syllabus may be presented for examination with written permission from the

SAKOV-Examination Board (please address such requests to [email protected] and CC

[email protected]).

8. Candidates can enter for any examination up to the Fourth examination. The Fifth examination is a

prerequisite for the Sixth examination. In the Fifth, focus is placed on liturgical formulation and planning

of music for the service; in the Sixth the focus is placed on extended chorale-based repertoire.

9. All hymns and songs from the Second up to the Sixth examination must include an appropriate

introduction. Introductions must be played with both hands and feet. A good strategy is to start with a

single voice en add one more voice per phrase (eg. S, ST, SAT, SATB). In polyphonic introductions it is

preferrable that the pedal be added only towards the end. Candidates must be able to play some of

the introductions on a different manual, with the necessary adjustments of pedal and registration once

the hymn/song begins. The introductions may be taken from an existing collection or be the candidate’s

own (see the section Introductions on the SAKOV website – available to SAKOV members).

10. For the First and Second examinations, it is expected that the candidate execute technical tasks, hymns

and songs largely in legato. In the succeeding examinations it is expected that the candidate take into

consideration the character and genre of the work at hand. Seeing that there are different opinions with

regards to the divison of voices between the hands and the slurring of repeated notes, it is important that

the candidate be able to motivate why their specific approach has been adopted.

11. The required technical skills for each examination (Section B) may be played from a previously drawn-up

copy.

12. The accompaniments in which the cantus firmus is not in the soprano, eg. Taizé song accompaniments

and canon-ostinati, shall not be played with leading voice. (See LB 160, 173, 178, 185, 187, 204, 211, 221,

22, 224, 226, 227, 272, 303, 316, 317, 328, 333, 369, 384, 398, 446, 526, 564, as well as VONKK MV (“Musikale

verryking”) -arrangements eg. VONKK 21-37). Hymns which are harmonised with more than 4-part chords

can also be played with leading voice, with adaptation of the accompaniment, but are not advised for

the first four examinations.

Page 3: CHURCH MUSIC SYLLABUS

2 SAKOV – CHURCH MUSIC SYLLABUS 2021

13. A broad choice of chorale-preludes (Section C) is provided. The term “written before 1750” pertains

generally to music written before the Romantic and Contemporary stylistical periods. Given that the

playing styles (especially regarding articulation) of music written before and after 1750 (the year of the

death of JS Bach) are so different, repertoire from both these genres will be prescribed since the First

examination. Music written in the 50 years immediately following 1750 contain elements of both styles.

Attention should also be given to the articulation of neo-classicl compositions such as those by Helmut

Walcha, or the South-African composer Chris Lamprecht.

14. It is advisable for organists to acquire the most recent editions of published collections, in order to remain

relevant to what is appropriate for the congregation. Seeing that we are of the opinion that

congregations often find the works of our local composers more appealing, emphasis is placed on the

inclusion of South-African compositions (see the remark regarding Awie van Wyk’s music for the First

examination in the LIST OF ADDITIONAL REPERTOIRE).

15. From the Second examination onwards, all chorale-preludes must be preceeded by a harmonisation of

the chorale/hymn on which the prelude is based (in the same key). For this reason, harmonisations are

included in the repertoire list. From the Second examination onwards, simple chorale/hymn-

harmonisations will not be recognised as complete works.

16. It is advised that candidates study as much repertoire as possible, particularly easier works. Not only is it

important not to repeat the same works in service week after week, but also this is the simplest way to

develop the necessary sight-reading skills.

17. Practical skills will be supplemented by background knowledge of theoretical aspects of relevance to

the church organist (Section D): basic knowledge of organ-building, registration practices, liturgical

functions, hymnology and musical styles. The acquisition of this background knowledge will be tested

through essays and viva voce. It is foreseen that introductory articles on these subjects and further will be

provided in the Organist’s Guide in the near future.

18. Essays written by candidates can, with the permission of the author, be considered for publication by

SAKOV. Towards the consideration for publication, it is necessary that a list of sources be included. It is

important that candidates produce original content and not limit themselves to summarising pre-existing

knowledge.

19. Examinations can take place in the following centres: Bloemfontein, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Stellenbosch

and Windhoek. Alternative centres can be considered if there are three or more candidates presented

from said centre, and if a qualified examiner is available.

20. Examiners will be appointed by the SAKOV Executive Committee

21. It is no simple task to create a syllabus which aims at accommodating organists from the diverse church

traditions within Southern Africa, and neither to learn the skills required to perform the ever-growing

treasury of church-hymns. As such, we see this as a dynamic, working-document which will develop in

time.

THIRD EXAMINATION

A. HYMN PLAYING

i. Choose 40 hymns of which 30 are to be played in four parts on the manuals (3 upper parts) and

with pedal (bassline). All hymns must have an introduction which is also presented pedaliter (i.e.

played on manuals and with pedal).

ii. TEN of the 40 chosen hymns must be played with leading voice, i.e. the melody is played with the

RH as leading voice, the middle voices with the LH and the bassline with the pedal.

The chosen hymns should be of a difficulty level comparable to those on the following list:

CH: 123, 134, 178, 214, 277, 312, 316, 355 (Celebrational Hymnal)

HAM: 12, 26, 35, 46, 60, 95, 140, 170 (Hymns Ancient and Modern)

LB/Psalm: 1, 5, 8, 23, 33, 48, 66, 89, 111, 128, 353, 365, 366, 389, 414, 442, 488 (Liedboek)

MH: 8, 35, 59, 77, 182, 323, 428, 667 (Methodist Hymn Book)

NACH: 16, 42, 76, 85, 97, 111, 221, 450 (New Apostolic Church Hymnal)

iii. Choose TEN further hymns written in a contemporary style. FIVE of these must be played from a

score containing only the melody and chord-symbols. The RH plays the melody, the LH plays a 2 or

3-part realisation of the chord-symbols, and the pedal plays the bassline. Legato-playing is the

norm in the playing of the LH chords.

See example:

Examples of hymns in a contemporary style:

o VONKK: 42, 57, 72, 119, 180, 309, 349, 370

o FLAM: 5, 18, 34, 216, 220

o LB: 284, 286, 547, 164, 170, 176, 177

o See also the Guitar Accompanist’s Book (Kitaarbegeleiersboek) of the Liedboek van die Kerk

(2001), VONKK-hymns as melody line (ML) or FLAM lead sheet.

B. TECHNICAL WORK: Further development of trio-playing and harmonisation skills

The candidate is expected to make FIVE trio arrangements from one of the hymnals (pre-prepared).

The RH plays the soprano/cantus firmus, the LH the alto/tenor and the pedal the bassline.

Adjustments must be made so that each chord is complete and contains a third.

Page 14: CHURCH MUSIC SYLLABUS

13 SAKOV – CHURCH MUSIC SYLLABUS 2021

In the example above, the notes in brackets are the notes printed in the Liedboek (2001) which

would have to be adjusted – in this case with a third higher, in order to complete the chords. NB the

trios can be played from a pre-prepared manuscript score.

FOURTH EXAMINATION

A. HYMN-PLAYING

i. Choose 50 hymns from different style periods/genres, to be performed pedaliter, with

introductions. The following hymn-styles should be represented: 16th century hymns (Genovese

Psalms); 17th and 18th century German hymns; 19th century English hymns; 20th and 21st century

hymns (may also include a meditative or Taizé-song, performed in a repetitive and varied

manner). Three distinct strophes will be played by each of the 30 chosen hymns. The registrations

must suit the character and textual content of the respective strophe.

ii. TEN of the chosen hymns must be played with the melody as leading voice in the RH, as

described for the Second Examination.

B. TECHNICAL WORK

i. From the hyms chosen in A, create TEN pedal-solos in which the cantus firmus is played exclusively

with the pedal. See example:

ii. The first phrases (ex: 2 bars) of the pedal-solos chosen for the previous section are played

sequencially in the same key (diatonically), ascending and descending, over the whole range of

the pedalboard. Transpose a second interval as in the following example:

iii. The cantus firmus must be arranged into trios by firstly adding chord-symbols above the melody-

line and then to translate them into a simple trio-texture (2-hands and pedal). Each chord should

preferrably contain a single third. NB the trio can be played from a pre-prepared manuscript

score.

iv. Four different types of cadences (perfect, imperfect, plagal or interrupted) must be selected from

the hymns chosen in A – each consisting of 3 chords (ex: ii V I). The candidate will be expected to

play these cadences and then transpose them; a semitone and a wholetone higher and lower.

The cadence-transpositions can be played from a pre-prepared manuscript score.
