Mother's Day, celebrated this year on Sunday, May 13, is a time to
recognize all mothers and the important role they play in our lives. The
founding of the American tradition of Mother's Day in 1908 is credited to
Anna Jarvis, a woman wanting to honor her mother through a memorial
service. This year, consider honoring your mother with a memorial or
honorarium gift to the church operating budget. Or, consider contributing
to a designated fund in her name to support a cause close to her heart.
For more information about honoring your loved ones, contact Pastor
Melody at 281-576-1832
or the Heartspring Methodist Foundation at 713-533-3780, 800-521-9617

wednesday nights for kids
Our Kids Beach Club after school
program at Barbers Hill Elementary
School South had its last session for the
2017-2018 School year on Tuesday,
April 23rd. This wonderful group of 3rd
-5th graders and adult volunteers has
spent 24 weeks together from September
thru April learning about a God who
created them, calls them by name, and
desires a personal relationship with each of them. Our highlights include “Great Treasure Day” where
each child received their own bible, our Easter club where the children created a special “Christ is Risen”
craft to take home with them, and our final session complete with an Ice Cream Social. Kids Beach Club
is possible because of our
amazing volunteers who gather
each week. Please join me in
thanking Teresa Schwendeman,
Ted Smith, Phyllis Ray and
Becky Cox! Without their faithful
support of our Kids Beach Club
children we wouldn’t be able to
share the love of Jesus Christ with
our 37 registered Kids Beach
Club participants. I thank God for
each of you!

fumc united methodist women The United Methodist Women is a community of women whose
purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons
through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship;
and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the
global ministries of the church.
As always the ladies of UMW have been busy going about the
business of what makes us who we are. One of the first things we
did this year was purchase an ice machine for the church kitchen. Nick Bercaw took care of installing the
new one and getting it in working order.
We had the first of two Garage Sales of the year in April. We were blessed by all the members of our
church who helped unload the container. There were lots of families, dads, sons, husbands, youth and of
course ladies. The garage sales help us with all of our operating costs and with all of our mission projects.
This year we will be putting together cleaning buckets that will stay at our church for Pastor
Melody to give out to anyone in need after a disaster.
Another mission project is Heifer International. Heifer International works in the areas of livestock
and agriculture to develop programs that alleviate hunger and poverty in third world countries.
We give cash donations to those in need around the holidays.
We support our youth who are in college by sending them a “goodie box” of snacks around finals
time. This lets them know that we love them, pray for them and support them.
If you or members of your family have been ill you have probably received a card from UMW with
a gift card for a meal at a local restaurant.
At the end of April UMW had a spaghetti dinner. All profits go towards our scholarship fund.
Each year we try to give a deserving senior, from our church, a college scholarship.
Mother’s Day gifts will be provided by UMW for all mothers on May 13th and a Father’s Day gift
will be provided for our dads in June.
This is to mention only a few of the mission projects that we do.
Many more activities will be going on throughout the year and we invite all ladies to join us. Come and
celebrate with us the love of our Lord and each other.
thank you!!! Thanks to everyone for supporting the Spaghetti Dinner that funds our Scholarship
Program.
There are not enough words to express our
thanks and appreciation to Carol and Gene
Baker for their time, expertise, and financial
support in preparing the spaghetti sauce and
pasta and Stacey Brandon for supplying all
the salad and fixins’ for our dinner!

A welcome sight in the Traditional Service during the past few
weeks is the revival of our choir!! Greg and Cheri Turner, our
newest members, expressed interest in being part of a church choir--
and it's happening!
Greg and Cheri moved to Mont Belvieu to be near their daughter's
family, Tim and Jennifer Arredondo and GRANDCHILDREN
Xander and Tori. The Turners live in Legends Bay Subdivision, a
long way from their former home in Nampa, Idaho!
Greg grew up in Denver and Cheri near Seattle, and they met at College Church of the Nazarene in
Nampa. Greg retired from a career in law enforcement, and Cheri was a speech/language pathologist in
the public school system. In retirement, he enjoys gardening and carpentry, and Cheri loves to bake and
sew.
In looking for a church home in their new community, they visited with Pastor Melody and asked for a
tour of Fisher Chapel which helped draw them to FUMCMB. Formerly members of the Nazarene
Church, they also knew there was a close correlation between that faith and Methodism. The Turners
have decided to focus on three areas of their new church affiliation: United Methodist Men, United
Methodist Women, and the church choir!!
