It is not necessarily the history of the church (facts, data, maps). It is an analysis of the past. A church historian is a theologian. How is church history done? By using methods just like "typical" history: Primary source text fundamental information (ex = a canon) Secondary source text information about a primary source (ex = Hussey) the term Byzantium comes from the town Byzants. It was from a 16th century French academic. This history is important to understand in order to understand the modern church. Orthodoxy of Culture, ie Orthodox Culture. The role of church and state. In ancient times, the interweaving of church and state was assumed. Byzantines did not see them selves as Byzantines, but as part of the Roman empire. The term empire means ecumenical (ecumenai). Either you are in or out. Politeia the commonwealth or group or 1 people who shares common ideas. Rhomaioi what people in the Byzantine empire called themselves. The position of the Roman emperor in the empire is seen as a protector and defender. Took an active interest in the church. They presided in councils and took part in choosing church leaders.
