JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN O FfEN, THE NAME OF AN EVENT will describe it accurately. In the Bible, names given to people expressed the character of the person, but names given today may not reveal their true meaning. The name which identifies this holiday season is the word "Incarnation." It reveals what is so special about the virgin Mary's baby Jesus. Other names for the day of His birth undermine the real meaning of "Incarnation Day," but the writ- ings of George W. Truett can help us gain understanding. Truett states, "Christianity stands or falls with the person of Christ. .. Human nature did not and could not produce Christ. .. The task is entirely too stupen- dous for poor human nature to accomplish, for Christ was both God and man in one personality-the God-man. Never did a hyphen mean what it means here. The God-man - it both joins and divides; it marks distinction and yet unity. Christ was as really man as though He were not God, and as really God as though He were not man-the God-man. Here stands out vastly the doctrine of the incarnation. 'God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself.' " When the wonder and joy of the incarnation are at the center of our Christmas celebration, we will view a decorated tree as a picture of everlasting life purchased .r- ~ for all who believe when Jesus was crucified on a tree.
