Pastor’s Reflections… May 31, 2020 Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., has announced new liturgical and pastoral directives during the COVID-19 pandemic, including limited “in church” weekend Masses beginning June 13/14, with Mass schedules to be determined by pastors.

Liturgical-Pastoral Directives in a Time of Pandemic

Limited Public Celebration of the Mass and Sacraments in Church

Proposed date: for public “in Church” Masses June 13/14, 2020

COVID-19 is still a virulent contagious virus communicated between people. Everyone should remain conscious and alert that risks to either contract or spread the disease remain possible at any gathering of people, indoors or outdoors. The risk is considered by public health experts to be especially significant indoors at prolonged, sedentary gatherings where coughing, sneezing and even talking/singing could easily communicate the coronavirus.

Those who are frightened, those with a COVID-19 diagnosis or symptoms, those who may be asymptomatic carriers, those not feeling well, those with underlying health conditions or those in a high-risk category should avoid public gatherings of any kind whether indoors or outdoors.

As Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton, I have been entrusted by the Church with the responsibility to exercise care for the spiritual needs of the faithful. I cannot do that effectively if I ignore their physical health and well-being or put that health and the common good at risk. For that reason, heeding the advice of public health officials and other scientific data, I directed the clergy and faithful of the Diocese to follow the courses of action we have pursued for the past several months.

The Catholic faithful, however, need the Eucharist for their spiritual health and well-being. It is an essential part of Catholic life, and we cannot continue to do without the Eucharist and other Sacraments indefinitely. The COVID-19 pandemic introduced temporary yet necessary sacrifices into our lives as Catholics. The faithful have carried the accompanying spiritual burdens heroically. Our clergy and I have shared those burdens, too, deprived as we have been of the opportunity to

exercise many of the pastoral and liturgical ministries for which we have been ordained as bishop, priests and deacons. It has been our common goal during this pandemic to minister as best we could in the hope that the gradual restoration of full Catholic life would occur as soon as possible.

A dispensation from Sunday/Holy Day obligation has been granted so that the faithful could “stay home” in good conscience. Masses and pastoral messages have been live-streamed by our priests to keep our Catholic faith consistent and strong. Churches have been re-opened for private prayer. outdoor, “in car” Masses have been provided wherever safely and worthily possible, giving the faithful who were/are able the opportunity to be nourished again by Christ’s Body and Blood in the Eucharist.

Balancing the physical, public health precautions deemed necessary with the spiritual good of the faithful, I have decided to resume limited opportunities for the faithful to return to their parish churches, while maintaining the necessary, required public health precautions present in the CDC Guidelines, as the Diocese gradually and safely moves toward the full restoration of Catholic spiritual and sacramental life. The Post-Pandemic Parish Task Force of Pastors (P4) that I established on May 3, 2020, under the leadership of Monsignor Thomas Gervasio, Vicar General, has developed the following “Directives” that I am mandating to be observed for participation at “in church” public Masses and Sacramental administrations throughout the Diocese of Trenton. I have maintained contact with the Governor and his chief counsel regarding these directives. Common Directives to be observed by all parishes until further notice The dispensation from Sunday/Holy Day Mass obligation remains in effect until Monday, September 7, 2020 (unless otherwise announced). The fulfillment of the Easter Duty may be accomplished before the First Sunday of Advent, November 29, 2020. The teachings of the Church regarding “Easter Duty,” as reflected in both the Catechism and the Code of Canon Law, indicate that there is an obligation to receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist – preceded by Sacramental Confession, if conscious of grave sin – at least once a year, usually during the Easter Season, unless there is a “just reason” that requires its fulfillment

Page 4: Church and School - St Rose Of Lima School8:30amAndrea Colleran: Husband, James Fri. 6:30am Joseph E. Davis: John Klapouchy 8:30am All the People of the Parish Sat. 8:30am Henry J

at another time of the year. In the Diocese of Trenton, it has been impossible to fulfill these obligations until the Sacraments are readily available again. In short, the presence of the COVID-19 situation is a “just reason” to delay the fulfillment of this duty and thus the obligation is moved to a time in the future when these Sacraments are available again.

Parish churches may begin the celebration of limited “in church” public weekend Masses – with no more than 1/3 occupancy – on June 13/14, the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, observing all requirements listed. Weekday “in church” public Masses – with no more than 25 persons attending – may begin on Monday, June 8, 2020, observing the same requirements. Pastors will determine the most fair and effective ways to ensure proper observance of those numbers.

Those who are hesitant or fearful because of COVID-19 concerns as well as those with a COVID-19 diagnosis or symptoms, those who may be asymptomatic carriers, those not feeling well, those with underlying health conditions or those in a high-risk category should stay home and avoid any public gathering.

Mass schedules in church are to be determined by pastors and an alternate location may be selected in accordance with parish needs and local guidelines.

Bishop David O’Connell With these directives in mind, we are trying very hard to put in place the requirements to have everyone return to Mass safely. The priests and parish staff need time to put all the necessary precautions in place. I will keep you updated via announcements, the bulletin, our website and Facebook, as to the date of the return to “in church” Masses and the temporary Mass schedule. We are striving to start “in church” Masses the weekend of June 20/21. More information will be coming soon.

PRIVATE PRAYER

Bishop David O’Connell declared on May 8 that churches may re-open for private prayer with the following conditions:

• Faithful from at risk groups as identified by CDC/NJ Department of Health should remain at home. • Limited days open for private prayer. • Hours for private prayer in open church to be determined by pastor. • Limited number of visitors at one time (no more than 10) according to NJ State guidelines and social distancing (minimum of 6 feet between visitors) to be observed. • Areas/pews for seating to be reserved to facilitate cleaning afterward. • Wearing of masks required for all those making visits. • Closing of public restroom facilities as a preventive health measure. • Designate a single entrance to control number of visitors; no gathering at entrance, steps or parking lots.

St. Rose of Lima Chapel will be open for private prayer Monday to Friday, 1:00 – 3:00 PM and Saturday, 9:00 – 11:00 AM. Members of the Knights of Columbus #1672 and other volunteers will be monitoring the entrance and making sure that everyone who wants to visit for private prayer is in compliance.

Wearing of face masks required for all visitors.

Private prayer limited to only ten (10) visitors at a time.

Please limit your time spent in prayer so others who may be waiting can also spend time in prayer.

Enter and exit through the main doors of the chapel only.

All are asked to use the folding chairs set up around the altar, not the taped off pews.

Bathrooms will be locked.

St. Robert Bellarmine hours for private prayer: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9:00 – 11:30 AM and 6:00 – 9:00 PM

About our Finances… We depend on the weekly collection to meet our financial obligations. Since we are not permitted Masses, we have no regular support. Because of on-line giving and parishioners who drop off their offering at the rectory, we are collecting about 20% of our usual weekly contributions. Thank you! How we weather this storm will probably affect what our parish will look like in the future. Please do what you can to help support our parish and prayerfully consider increasing your offering as it may take some time to recoup when the crisis is over. Please continue to use the weekly envelopes and send in your offerings by mail or by drop off at the parish office in the mail slot. If you do not have envelopes, please use any plain envelope. You can also sign up for Parish Giving at www.ParishGiving.org or call 1-866-307-7140.

THAT UPLIFT The Most Holy Trinity

(John 3:16-18) Fr. Michael Brizio, IMC

www.frmichaelbrizio.com

When the bishop’s ship stopped at a remote island for a day, he decided to use the time as profitably as possible. He strolled along the seashore and came across three fishermen mending their nets.

In Pidgin English they explained to him that centuries ago they were Christianized by missionaries. “We, Christians!” they said, proudly pointing to themselves. The bishop was impressed. Did they know the Lord’s Prayer? They had never heard of it. The bishop was shocked. How could these men claim to be Christians when they did not know something as elementary as the Lord’s Prayer?

“What do you say, then, when you pray?” the bishop asked. “We lift eyes in heaven. We pray, ‘We are three, you are three, have mercy on us.” The bishop was appalled at the primitive, downright heretical nature of their prayer. So, he spent the whole day teaching them to say the Lord’s Prayer and he succeeded, although the fishermen were poor learners. Months later the bishop’s ship happened to pass by those islands and the bishop, as he paced the deck saying his evening prayers, recalled with pleasure the fact that on that distant island were three fishermen who were now able to pray correctly, thanks to his patient efforts. While he was lost in thought he happened to look up and noticed a spot of light in the east. The light kept approaching the ship and, as the bishop gazed in wonder, he saw three figures walking on the surface of the water towards the boat. The captain stopped the boat and all the sailors leaned over the rails to see this amazing sight. When they were within speaking distance, the bishop recognized his three friends, the fishermen. “Bishop!” they exclaimed, “We are so glad meet you! We heard your boat go past island and came in a hurry, hurry to meet you.” “What do you want?” asked the bishop filled with wonder seeing them walking on water as Jesus did. “Bishop,” they said, “we so sorry. We forgot that lovely prayer you taught us. We remember only this much, ‘Our Father in heaven, holy be your name, your kingdom come’. . .the rest we forgot. Please teach us whole prayer again.” The bishop felt humbled. “Go back to your homes, my good men,” he said, “and each time you pray, say your Holy Trinity prayer, ‘We are three, you are three, have mercy on us!”

DURING CORONAVIRUS EMERGENCY

Bishop David M. O’Connell, issued this guidance April 2, 2020, on Confession and the Sacrament of Penance during the current health crisis: During this time when our churches and chapels are closed, and when the risk of transmitting COVID-19 is of such grave concern, Confessions should only be requested of our priests in times of emergency or other extreme circumstances. I ask the faithful to reflect on the advice of Pope Francis and the Catechism’s teaching on seeking God’s forgiveness during these very difficult days: “But many people today would tell me, ‘Father, where can I find a priest, a confessor, because I can’t leave the house? And I want to make peace with the Lord, I want him to embrace me, I want the Father’s embrace.’ Do what the Catechism of the Catholic Church (n. 1452) says. It is very clear: If you cannot find a priest to confess to, speak directly with God, your father, and tell him the truth. Say, ‘Lord, I did this, this, this. Forgive me,’ and ask for pardon with all your heart. Make an act of contrition and promise God, ‘I will go to confession afterward, but forgive me now.’ And immediately you will return to a state of grace with God.

Spiritual Communion is a Christian practice of desiring union with Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. It can be used as a preparation for Mass and when it is not possible to receive Holy Communion.

An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Amen.
