THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

Today’s Gospel lesson teaches a lot about rules. Observing rules and observing other people ob-serving rules. Do this sentence completion exercise: “Rules are made ____.” While some might conclude: “Rules are made to be broken.” That’s too easy, think differently. A possible sentence completion might be: “Rules are made for really dumb people.”

I read hand-books and cringe! Most of their contents came as a reaction to what was occurring in the society. The many volumes, paragraphs, and pages of Penal Codes! Yet capital punishment does not stop crime. School handbooks! Because it is happening, there are rules to punish cheat-ing, skipping school, etc. Still, expulsion does not stop bad behavior. Yikes! The rule books are so thick. So are the societies and groups for whom they were made. There is no need for the rule: “Do not kill.” Killing was wrong long before the commandment/rule was promulgated. God say-ing killing is wrong doesn’t make it wrong. It is wrong and God says so. The mind and heart working together tell us how to make ethical/moral decisions. If you develop a sense of honoring

God, others, yourself, and planet you come to know that some actions are - in themselves – simply wrong. When you do wrong, you are doing something that is beneath the dignity of anyone who claims to be a Christian or a human. You know and feel wrong doing. It’s the “moral law that is within every human.”

Because rules keep all of us safe, societies are grateful to those who are cautious and compose laws. We are grateful to wise judges. Let’s allow for the corrective of empathy, compassion, mercy, and down-to-earth common sense.

Better than a list of rather obvious vices and punishments, begin with virtues and directions toward virtuous behavior. Great coaches teach: “Do it this way. This is what I expect you to do.” Do it this way, be a person of integrity. Be hon-est and consistent. Be the same wise, honorable, and just person to all people in every situation. In today’s Gospel les-son, Jesus calls the Pharisees hypocrites. Hypocrisy shares the same root as actor. Hypocrite and actor are synonyms. The hypocrite is a pretender, one who falsely presents him/herself. Sometimes the actor is heedful and vigilant to the law, other times the actor is cavalier and irresponsible. Nobody wants to play a game where anybody can change the rules at whim. Neither do we want to be with people who change as opportunities present themselves. “I’m an honest person, I only cheat on my taxes and a variety of other contractual payments which I feel I can disregard and not get caught.”

The person of integrity is one who is like an integer, one whole. This person is not lacking. The person of integrity is uncorrupted, upright and honest. People of integrity are pure and undefiled, unstained, before God and all people. These people are “truly wise and intelligent people.” Practice the virtue of integrity. Self-esteem and the race to the gold good conduct medal begins with integrity.

Thank you to the CLIF organization and those who supported their effort at last Saturday’s Brewfest. It’s the initiative of parents to provide revenue for the grammar school. It brings the community together. Thanks for the hard work of organizing, presenting, and care for St. Juliana’s Parish.

First Reading — Moses directs the people to observe the commandments of the Lord (Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8).

Psalm — The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord (Psalm 15).

Second Reading — Welcome the word that you have received and become doers of the word, not hearers only (James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27).

Gospel — You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition (Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.
