Reflections—Walking the Path into Holiness
from Gaudete et Exsultate
In the spring of 2018, Pope Francis authored a document entitled Rejoice and Be Glad about the call and pursuit of personal holiness. Below and in subsequent bulletins, you will find an edited document that breaks it into small pieces, and after each section offers a question for reflection and conversation. 7. Pope Francis says that holiness grows through smalls steps, and he gives an example: "a woman goes shopping, she meets a neighbor and they begin to speak, and the gossip starts. But she says in her heart: 'No, I will not speak badly of anyone.' This is a step forward in holiness. Later, at home, one of her children wants to talk to her about his hopes and dreams, and even though she is tired, she sits down and listens with patience and love. That is another sacrifice that brings holiness. Later she experiences some anxiety, but recalling the love of the Virgin Mary, she takes her rosary and prays with faith. Yet another path of holiness. Later still, she goes out onto the street, encounters a poor person and stops to say a kind word to him. One more step. (para. 16 in Gaudete et Exsultate) What did you do today that was a step toward greater holiness? What is one small step you could take tomorrow? 8. Our holiness is not just something extra, something nice to do, but rather it is our mission given to us by God, to be lived at a specific moment in history. Your holiness is you mission and no one else's. Our mission is lived out in union with Christ, never on our own. "It consists in uniting ourselves to the Lord's death and resurrection in a unique and personal way, constantly dying and rising anew with him. But it can also entail reproducing in our own lives various aspects of Jesus' earthly life: his hidden life, his life in community, his closeness to the outcast, his poverty, and other ways in which he showed his self-sacrificing love. Therefore, each of us is " a message which the Holy Spirit takes from the riches of Jesus Christ and gives to his people." (para. 19, 20, 22 in Gaudete et Exsultate) What is one concrete way that your own life reflects the life that Jesus lived on this earth?

Spread the Good News: Registration for Religious Ed Classes will begin on the weekend of September 8th & 9th after each Mass.
New for 2018 – 2019: In an effort to foster and grow a love for both our Church family and the Eucharist, St. Mary’s Religious Ed Program this year will begin on September 23rd for Pre K –9th Grade Confirmation with Social Time at 9:30 am followed by Class begins at 9:45am. We will relocate to the Church at 10:45 and conclude with Mass. If you have any questions please call the Religious Ed Office at 269-657-4459 ext. 223.
Lector Workbooks-Sign-up sheet in the Sacristy for those interested in obtaining a workbook. The workbook is a great aid not only for pronunciation but also for form and purpose of the readings.
RCIA INQUIRY SESSIONS BEGINNING SOON! Inquiry sessions are informal and open to anyone who has an interest in the Catholic faith. Rooted from the very beginning of Church tradition, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the path for welcoming new inquirers into our community of believers. If you, or someone close to you, are considering becoming a member of the Catholic community here at St. Mary’s then please accept our invitation to join with us weekly on Wednesday evenings, at 7:00pm beginning September 26th in the School Library. We will discuss questions regarding the Rite itself, look at what the Rite offers all of us during this wonderful spiritual journey, and how the Church uses the Rite for those seeking any or all of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist.We encourage those already members of the community to consider being a part of the RCIA team where by sharing your faith you will receive the gift that comes by helping others grow in theirs.
