Students are expected to attend each class on time at Christiansburg High School each day.

Regular attendance is a critical factor in school success for students. Excessive absenteeism generally results in poor learning and unsatisfactory grades

Documented vs. Undocumented

It is important for students/parents to provide documentation for all absences.

Undocumented absences are assumed to be without parent knowledge or permission.

After School ActivitiesStudents who are absent from school

are not allowed to participate in after-school activities that particular day.

Student Athletes must attend ALL periods of classes to be eligible to play or practice that day. ◦Exceptions may be made by an

administrator for circumstances related to medical appointments, court/legal issues, and other absences deemed acceptable.

Attendance IncentivesStudents who demonstrate exemplary attendance

practices, and/or who make dramatic improvements in their attendance will earn “Blue Demon Dollars” in the following manner:

Perfect attendance in a semester (no period absences, tardies, check-ins, check-outs) -- $10 BDD 

Less than 10 tardies, check-ins/check-outs, or period absences in a semester -- $5 BDD

Attendance Incentives cont.Additionally, students who have an “A” or “B” in a

course and have no more than 3 absences for 9th, 10th and 11th graders &9 absences for 12th graders

are exempt from Final Exams. Exam Exemption does not apply to Dual Enrollment courses.

Grade-Level Competition: Twice per year, the grade level with the highest attendance rate for a specified month will be rewarded with an ice cream social – during a 30-45 minute time-segment within a specified school day. The contest would be announced prior to the month and daily updates would be communicated to students daily during the contest period.

Absence ConsequencesIn addition to incentives, it is important for students to understand that

absenteeism has consequences. The importance of this lesson extends beyond high school to life and career situations.

5 absences in a semester= A notification letter is sent to each parent/guardian.

10 absences in a semester= Student meeting with an administrator to review reasons for absences, attendance expectations, and to assign consequences. Typical consequence- one week loss of good standing status.

15 absences in a semester= Student meeting with an administrator to review reasons for absences, attendance expectations, discuss possible truancy charges and to assign consequences. Typical consequence- 2 week loss of good standing status.

20 absences in a semester= Student meeting with an administrator to review reasons for absences, attendance expectations, discuss possible truancy charges, assign consequences, and develop attendance improvement goals. Typical consequence- loss of good standing status for the remainder of the year or until all attendance goals are reached.

Absence Consequences cont.If the attendance plan is not followed and the

attendance improvement goals are not met, the following consequences are likely:

Meeting with Truancy Counselor◦ May refer student/parent to court system for truancy

Loss of “Good Standing” status◦ Prohibited from attending/participating in field trips,

school-day performances/pep rallies/events, club activities, dances, athletic practices and games

◦ Lose Parking Privileges until restored to “Good Standing”

Lunch DetentionBefore-School Detention to make up work

Consequences for Tardies Lunch Detention- assigned to each student who

accumulates 5 total tardies (across all classes) in a 9 week period. An additional day will be assigned for tardies 6-9.

  Full Day of In-School Suspension- assigned to

each student who accumulates 10 tardies (across all classes) in a 9 week. Additional days added for each subsequent tardy.

Additional Consequence for Students Who Park at CHS- Driving to school and parking on school property is a privilege. Students who drive will lose this privilege for one week after accumulating 5 tardies due to arriving late for the school day. Students will lose their privilege for the rest of the semester after accumulating 10 tardies due to arriving late for the school day
