What are your Advent faith

practices? Do you have Ad-

vent faith practices? It can be easy to get swept up

into the commercial side of this very

special season. It can be easy to get

wound up with the busyness, worry-

ing about getting all our regular stuff

done, and also getting our holiday ac-

tivities accomplished. It can be easy to

lose sight of what Advent is all about.

When I was a kid we had an Advent

calendar, and I really looked forward

the evenings when it was my turn to

open the little window to see the pic-

ture behind. (With seven children, my

turn didn’t come around as often as I

might have liked.) This year, though, for the first

time, I have an Advent calendar again. I got a choco-

late Advent calendar! Two really, one for Rod to have

in Iowa City and one for us to have here. (Although

the chocolates in the one here are my chocolates, let’s

be clear…)

Some families mark the days and

weeks of Advent with an Advent

wreath and candles to light. Some have

special devotions for each day of Ad-

vent. Some make time and space in

their schedules and budgets to reach

out to those who are in need or who

may struggle during the holiday sea-

son.

It can be hard to focus on Advent,

though, amidst the materialism that

sometimes seems to take over Christ-

mas. It can be difficult to focus on the

meaning behind Advent when the culture around us

Youth Happenings

A note from the Director of Youth and

Family Ministry…

In December the youth will serve the Advent Soup

Supper on December 13 to raise funds for the 2018

ELCA Youth Gathering, celebrate Christmas with a

movie, popcorn, and hot chocolate on December 3

after the second service, and help wrap gifts for

Adopt-A-Family on December 10 during Sunday

school. If you would like to participate in Adopt-A-

Family, please take an ornament from the Christmas

tree downstairs. These gifts are due in Grace’s office

no later than December 10, so the youth can wrap

them during Sunday school on the 10th.

On November 18, the youth put together 19 birthday

bags for the IMPACT (Ankeny food pantry.) They

had an awesome time putting these bags together for

children in need. We also had a blast playing Emoji

bingo and sardines, eating delicious cake, and break-

ing a piñata. Thank you to everyone that donated

birthday items.

Join us for Pub Theology on December 14 from 7:00-

9:00 p.m. at Firetrucker in Ankeny. Recent revela-

tions about Karl Barth give us a chance to think

about the ways in which we give ourselves permis-

sion to sidestep Christian ethics we

find inconvenient, and how in so do-

ing, we deceive ourselves.

Gathering Corner Thank you to everyone that purchased stocked and

became a shareholder in the 2018 ELCA Youth Gath-

Chef Party and those who ordered online as well.

only 25 miles away from Lamar, Missouri. We are

truly thankful for an amazing congregation that sup-

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness

has not overcome it.” — John 1:5

As Christmas approaches, we give thanks to you!

Every day, as a ministry partner of LSI, you help

bring the light of Christ to others.

At LSI, we know many people experiencing deep

darkness. We know parents who feel hopeless, with

little to no resources to raise their young children. We

know adults with disabilities who feel voiceless, with

no support system or connection to their community.

We know teens who are aging out of the foster care

system, who fear they will never belong to anyone or

have a family to love them.

LSI’s work is Christmas work, shining love, compas-

sion, and light in places of darkness, despair, abuse,

neglect, addiction, and loneliness. We could not do

this important work without you, and we are so

grateful.

Wishing you a blessed and merry Christmas from

LSI!

Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to

the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate ser-

vice. LSI is an affiliated social ministry partner of

the Iowa congregations of the ELCA (Evangelical Lu-

theran Church in America) and a member of

LSA (Lutheran Services in America). We proudly

serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gen-

der identities, national origins, ethnicities, races, and

sexual orientations. Learn more at www.LSIowa.org

and www.facebook.com/LSI.iowa.

Merry Christmas from LSI!

The “It Shall Be Done” group meets every Thursday at 9:30 a.m. The first Thursday of the month we have a

Bible study taken from the church magazine, Gather. The rest of the month we have fun projects going

with coffee on the side. Join Us!

The WELCA Thankoffering was November 18/19.

Thank you to the entire congregation for your sup-

port, we received $733. The outreach of the women of

the church is supported through these offerings. This

100-year tradition is grounded in our celebration of

community as we joyfully gather in thanksgiving and

praise for what God has given us. During the wor-

ship service, members are invited to give a special

offering to help continue ministry efforts of the ELCA

women.

wants to jump to Christmas, turning it into a multi-

month celebration of music, decorating and shop-

ping.

But Advent is an important time. During Advent we

remember that we are waiting. Not waiting for

Christmas and the birth of Jesus, but waiting for that

day when Jesus comes again and God’s kingdom is

finally and fully realized. Contrary to those who

would say otherwise, we don’t know when that will

be, but Jesus calls us to be attentive, to be alert and to

wait faithfully in the meantime.

So how can we better focus on Advent and the time

of waiting that the season calls us to remember? How

can we establish faith practices that will help us live

into the season, marking each day with the hope of

Jesus’ promised return?

As I write this, I am reminded of the funeral we had

for Leone Petty. Leone had a long life, and hers was a

deeply faithful life. She experienced 101 years of

waiting, but it was an active, hopeful, confident wait-

ing. The words of God were ever near at hand for

her, even at the very end of her life, when those

words that she had memorized blessed both her and

the family that walked with her in those final weeks.

The faith practices of her life sustained her through

all the days of her life.

Maybe this season of Advent is time to remember the

value of regular practices of faith, prayer, scripture,

worship, service, giving and fellowship with fellow

believers. How can we give new life to those practices

which will sustain us as we wait with all our brothers

and sisters in Christ for the day that he returns in

glory?

Keep awake. We

don’t know the

day or time, but

thanks be to God,

Jesus is coming

again.
