Theres good newsfor YMCA and local sportsfamilies and fans in Mt.Juliet: city commissioners

Monday night gave the okayo begin negotiations withhe organization to build on

    donated land behind Publix

    on Lebanon Road.YMCA officials,

represented at the meeting byYMCA of Middle TennesseeVice President Rob Gray, have said YMCA anticipatesreceipt of a gift of50 acres donatedby current ownerBen Forkum.Called a perfectYMCA site, onlyapproximately 25acres is neededfor the facility, and the rest will

be developed intosome much-needed sportsfields and greenways.

Conditions of theetter of intent submittedby the YMCA and modifiedby Mt. Juliet Mayor LindaElam at the table includeda pedestrian path acrossCedar Creek and YMCA willprovide overflow parkingfrom the ball fields. In returnfor the donation of the lando the City, the YMCA askshe City to construct some

or all of the roads into theproperty.

According to theetter, Road 1 would runfrom the current ball field

(Mt. Juliet Little League)access road located behindthe Publix grocery store, across Cedar Creek, and tothe parking lot that will bepart of the YMCAs familywellness center. The bridgefor Road 1 would includea pedestrian lane, as boththe YMCA and the Cityexpect this to be used by a

large number of pedestriansaccessing the ball fields.

The necessity ofa pedestrian path here was discussed, with Elamcalling building an asphalt

bridge the most expensiveoption out there. Hagertysuggested that City stafflook at the options.

The letter states thatRoad 2 would be furtherwest, and run from Highway70, across Cedar Creek andto the parking lot that willbe part of the YMCAs familywellness center. The preciselocation of Road 1 will bedetermined by the Cityand the YMCA. The preciselocation of Road 2 will bedetermined by the City, the

YMCA and the donor of theProperty.

    The YMCA is

working on a definitivedonation agreement withthe owner of the Property, states the letter, signedby Chief Operating OfficerDavid Byrd. We believethis project would result intremendous benefit to thecitizens of Mt. Juliet, and welook forward to working with you to bring a full-service

YMCA center to the City.Gray said the YMCA

of Mt. Juliet services 12,000 14,000 people per week, and the new facility shouldtake approximately one year

    and $2 $2.5million to build.

The sportsfields could beready beforethat however, the parking lots would not bepoured untilthe Y facility isready for them,

and temporary gravel lotswill be in use in the interim.

Elam sponsoredanother shot at reworkingthe policy manual for theboard of commissioners butdid not receive a motion fromthe board to even consider it.District 1 Commissioner TedFloyd took the opportunity toclarify that he had not beenin favor of giving himselfinsurance, since he alreadyhas health insurance, andsaid many people hadcontacted him expressing

    their disappointment in

YMCA, sports fields back on the table

We believe this project would result in

tremendous benefit to the citizens of Mt.

Juliet, and we look forward to working

with you to bring a full-service YMCA

center to the City.-- Letter of Intent to City

    Dear Editor:Im writing this

etter to express our sincereratitude to Mayor Linda

Elam and City ManagerRandy Robertson of the Cityof Mt. Juliet, and the WestWilson Utility District for

assistance that was providedto us at the City of LebanonWastewater TreatmentPlant.

The City of Lebanonis in the middle of amajor expansion of ourwastewater treatment plant. An undertaking of thismagnitude is expensive andany delay we experience canadd significantly to the costof the project.

    We recently found

ourselves in a situationthat required the removalof heavy sludge and gritfrom the bottom of anexisting concrete tank. Wedetermined that the quickestand most practical way toachieve this was by using avactor truck. Unfortunately, the City of Lebanons vactortruck was unavailable foruse as it was undergoingsome repair and would notbe available for as long astwo weeks.

Billy Dranes, Treatment Plant Manager, contacted Shannon Joyner and explained oursituation and asked if Mt.

Juliet Public Works wouldbe able to assist us. Heimmediately dispatchedthe Mt. Juliet vactor truckto the Lebanon wastewaterplant. Brandon Ambroseand Jason Deadmon spentall or part of 4 separate days working with us to get the job done and we were able

to avoid any delays to theconstruction project.

Also, recently aninfluent line was broken which is an odd size and we would have been downa couple of days waiting forthe part if Kelly at the WestWilson Utility District didnot have the repair sleeve onhis shelf. This is the secondtime he has helped us out.

The city boundariesblur in a time of need. Wehope to reciprocate theirkindness in the future.

    Sincerely,Philip Craighead

    Mayor

    To the Editor:Tomorrow, October

1, 2009, the citizens ofWilson County will have anopportunity to make historyand shape the future ofour county by casting theirVOTE FOR the referendumon a wheel tax to be levied onvehicles registered in WilsonCounty. The referendumcalls for a $25.00 wheel tax

needed to retire the bondsfor the construction of a newLebanon High School andthe purchase of propertyfor a new Watertown HighSchool. Once the bondsare paid off, the $25.00 wheel tax will be removed. This single act of passinga referendum will have amuch greater impact thanproviding the resources tobuild a school and purchaseproperty for a future school. The benefits to our entirecounty will be long lastingand far reaching as it will

provide an investmentin the education of thechildren of Wilson Countyfor generations and create aclimate for economic growthand expansion throughoutour county.

First, allow me toaddress the benefits to theeducation of our youth.Wilson County Schoolsare the envy of otherschools throughout middleTennessee and our studentscontinue to excel andcompete with other students

enrolled in much betterfunded programs around thestate. Our students rankamong the best of the bestacademically, athletically, and in state and nationalcompetitions. Hundreds

of families move into ourcounty each year just forthe opportunity to enrolltheir children in our schoolsystem. With the continuedgrowth in student populationand an old dilapidatedfacility, we are now facedwith a critical need for a newLebanon High School. Ourcurrent facility at LebanonHigh School is marginal at

best and is beyond the pointof renovation. Our studentsare forced to enduresubstandard conditionsand yet expected to achievea world-class education. There is little or no debateabout the need for a newLebanon High School, which will provide our childrenwith an opportunity to learnand grow in a clean and safeenvironment conducive toteaching and learning. Iffor no other reason, it is amoral obligation we oweour children and future

generations who will benefitfrom this investment. Afterall is said and done, ourchildren are our greatestlegacy and the heirs andbeneficiaries of all we cangive them.

Secondly, permit meto address the economicgrowth and expansion thatoften follows as a resultof providing a qualityeducational program.Businesses and industryevaluate future sites forexpansion based on the

quality of life the newlocation can provide fortheir employees and theirfamilies. Public schoolfacilities and educational

    Reflections from an

    Old Friend

Deer Season + Vehicles = Traffic Crashes

Did you know that each year there are approximately 500,000 deer/auto collisionsresulting in over 100 deaths and thousands of injuries? With Wilson Countys growth and theurban sprawl, the deer population is being forced out of the woods and into our neighborhoodsand on our roadways. Deer are most likely to come out between the months of November thru

January but are apt to come out at anytime of the year, especially this year with all the rain. Deeralso tend to come out between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. or early in the morninghours.

According to statistics, automobiles make up 61 percent of the animal/deer relatedcrashes, trucks 26 percent, vans 7 percent and tractor trailers 2 percent. But keep in mind, those are only statistics.

The following are defensive driving tips for avoiding deer/animal collisions:Be vigilant in the early morning hours, the most active time for deer.Use your high-beam headlights, which reflect in the deers eyes, to see the deer better.Slow down and blow your horn with one long blast to frighten the deer away.Brake firmly when you notice a deer in or near your path. Do not swerve. It can confuse

the deer about which way to run. It can also cause you to lose control and crash.Be alert and aware at all times. Drive with caution.Always wear your seat belt. Most people killed or injured in deer/animal collisions werent

    wearing seat belts.

Look for other deer after one has crossed the road. Deer seldom run alone.Be prepared for anything at anytime and anywhere! In closing, our roadways can be a very dangerous place to travel in the first place and

any unexpected obstacles only make the process that more dangerous. So please buckle up,slow down and drive safely. We cant afford to lose any of our most precious cargo.
