Despite the heat of a mid-August paved parking lot, people of all ages squinted in the sun and waited for the cooling dusk as they cruised the Chik-Fil-A lot in Providence Saturday

night during the summer-long Mt. Juliet Cruise-In to see cars, trucks, and now a boat on display. There were “a couple hundred” cars and trucks, ranging from antiques to the latest 2010 Ford Mustang, on display, including the show’s “fi rst boat, a

racer,” according to event coordinator and champion Bill McCall. “This is a fi rst,” McCall noted, nodding to the sleek race boat. “That thing’ll go 160 mph – can you imagine?” He shook his head and grinned. “No way you’d get me in it.” The Mt. Juliet Cruise-In “has been pretty crowded all summer,” McCall said, and runs each Saturday night, weather permitting, from April until October, 5 – 9 p.m. Not only are hundreds of cars on display, but admission is free for spectators, and DJ extraordinaires Dennis and Donna Purtell spin tunes from the 1950s to the 1980s. There is also a hula-hoop contest for the kids, door prizes, and a chance to meet and greet some of the area’s antique car collectors. Mt. Juliet resident Winston Patton said he arrived at 3 p.m. Saturday to get a sweet spot for his 1950 Chevrolet truck. He’s participated in the Saturday Night Cruise-In for three years and says he keeps coming back “just to be involved.” “It’s fun,” Patton shrugged from his portable chair, squinting in the

setting sun. “It’s fun to do, fun for the whole family, and it doesn’t cost anything.” McCall and his wife, Bobbi, have their own classic cars and got the idea for the Mt. Juliet Cruise-In from attending shows at Backyard Burgers in Franklin. McCall said he originated the Cruise-In at Sonic in Mt. Juliet, where the event remained for nearly 10 years before relocating to Chik-Fil-A, thanks to the support and endorsement of owner/operator Ray Daniel. Other sponsors include Two Rivers Ford (who offered the new Mustang to show), Advanced Auto of Mt. Juliet, and Discount Tire, which donates coupon cards as door prizes. Allen King with Two Rivers Ford said the dealership enjoys being involved in the Cruise-In, and along with Sherman Hunter, they offer a gift card for $100 in service work as a weekly door prize. Classy black T-shirts are also available for sale at Chik-Fil-A, and anyone

interested in entering a car in the show can do so for a $1.00 donation, which goes into a fund to keep the Cruise-In going. “This is such a great event,” commented Julia Ghee, who volunteers with the Cruise-In with her husband, Larry. Their daughter, Lauren, is considered “the hula-hoop queen” and has recruited many of her friends and classmates to the Saturday night contest. “This is an event for the community: families can come out and shop on a Saturday afternoon, have dinner, then bring their kids and family out for a free car show, great music and good times for the kids. It’s a safe place and a fun family environment.” For more information on how to enter your classic car in the Mt. Juliet Cruise-In call Bill McCall at 615-871-4620. T h e event is every Saturday night, weather permitting, through October, 5 – 9 p.m. at Chick-Fil-A in Providence MarketPlace.

Members of the public turned in force at Wilson County Commission’s meeting Monday to support and/or opposed three major items on the agenda. Besides approving a $190.8 million budget for fi scal year 2009-2010, the commission voted on prohibiting guns in parks as well as increasing the adequate facilities tax, or impact fee. Before the resolutions were discussed, District 20 Commissioner Annette S t a f f o r d read a letter from Lyndon LaFeve r s , president of the Eastern M i d d l e Tennessee Association of Realtors. The letter stated that while Lafevers supported a new Lebanon High School, he fi rmly opposed an increase to adequate facilities tax. “This will force appraisers to justify an $8,000 increase in what a house is worth,” LaFevers said. “It will slow growth, put contractors out of business, and it will give the county a negative image.” LaFever’s letter was met with thunderous applause from the audience, which was full of citizens, school employees and real estate agents. First off was the resolution to prohibit guns in parks. County Attorney Mike Jennings provided an amendment to the resolution which would only opt out the James E. Ward Agricultural

Center because he said “there are a lot of student activities going on there and we should keep them safe.” Sheriff Terry Ashe was asked what he thought about the resolution. He said that he looked up the defi nitions for a park, convention center, event center, agricultural center and fairgrounds, and was not sure if the Ward Ag. Center qualifi ed as any of them. “The ball fi elds are rented out to other people and the fair is run by o t h e r people,” Ashe said. “It’s their responsibility. I will enforce whatever is passed.”

“Since 1994,” said District 23 Commissioner Bernie Ash, “200,000 people have gotten handgun permits and they are not the ones committing crimes. We’re addressing a problem that doesn’t exist. This whole thing is ridiculous.” Jennings told commissioners “We’re voting on being a part of a law that hasn’t even gone into effect. But if we opt out and ban guns, then we will have an excuse in a lawsuit. We can show that we tried to keep guns out of the area.” District 9 Commissioner Gary Tarpley said that this would only take guns away from honest people while District 14 Commissioner Jeff Joines said it was a sad state of affairs that this was the

best thing to come out of the General Assembly this year. The commission voted to substitute the resolution for the amendment, but then voted against the prohibition of guns 8-15, with Stafford abstaining. The next major issue was the increase in the adequate facilities tax. The resolution was brought by District 1 Commissioner Larry West and was seconded by District 3 Commissioner Fred Weston. “I understand why some of you don’t like this,” said District 19 Commissioner L.T. Jenkins,

“but I know we need a new L e b a n o n H i g h S c h o o l . What’s the p r o b l e m w i t h

limiting the amount of newcomers the county gets? I like the status quo.” “The issue here is capital growth,” said District 8 Commissioner Frank Bush. “We were unwilling

If your tooting student’s horn’s out of tune or drum isn’t thrumming, you no longer have to travel to Nashville or Murfreesboro for band instrument repair: just march over to Harley’s Band Room in Mt. Juliet, the area’s fi rst repair shop specializing in school musical instruments.

Harley Tatarsky has been serving Middle Tennessee bands since 1982, with repair and rental shops in Hendersonville and the West End/Centennial Park area of Nashville. He specializes in school music, renting and repairing instruments and offering textbooks and supplies. Once a band director himself, Tatarsky has worked with the

directors of many Metro bands, as well as band directors at Tennessee Tech University, Vanderbilt, and in Overton, Williamson, and Sumner counties. Tatarsky said he chose Mt. Juliet to open a new Band Room because he was looking for a place he thought was “under-served” in the area of band instrument repair. “It’s a mutual benefi t for everyone,” he said. “Before, people in the Mt. Juliet and Wilson County area have to send off their instruments or drive to Murfreesboro or Nashville. Plus, I’m the only area shop that specializes in school

music.” Tatarsky said the band directors he’s worked with recommend his services and shop because of his “good reputation” in service and repair. “People know what I can do, what I’m capable of,” he said. “I’m glad to be of service to the people of Mt. Juliet and the county.”

Harley’s Band Room also offers rental instruments for beginners, including brass wind, wood wind, and percussion instruments. He does not offer guitars or electrical

instrument rentals. The shop offers textbook and supplies sales, such as lesson books for area schools. Harley’s Band Room opened on August 1 and is located at 1006 Charlie Daniels Pkwy., Unit E, in Mt. Juliet. For more information call Harley at 615-758-9008 or visit his website at www.HarleysRepairs.com.

District 57 Tennessee State Rep. Susan Lynn announced Monday that she will run for the District 17 State Senate seat in the 2010 race, and one Wilson County commissioner from Mt. Juliet is considering Lynn’s vacant House seat.Current District 17 Sen. Mae Beavers announced earlier this year that she is running for Wilson County Mayor, leaving her post in the Senate. Lynn made the announcement at the Mt. Juliet/West Wilson County Chamber of Commerce Monday morning, a fi tting location considering she said the believes “jobs and economic development” to be the top priority for the State of Tennessee at the moment. District 22 Wilson County Commissioner Heather Scott of Mt. Juliet said Tuesday that she is considering running for the State House of Representatives 57th District, and she said the main factor affecting her decision is “Wilson County’s 22nd District and making sure that the citizens will be represented properly.” “Government should be strongest on the local level and operate from the bottom up versus the top down method under which we currently exist. ” Scott said. “I would work to give more authority and funding to our local governments. Scott said she is a Libertarian and “a fi rm believer in reducing the amount of government people have in their day to

day lives to reduce their tax burden so they can keep more of the money that they earn to spend on the things that are important to them and their families. I’m a huge believer in the private sector. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are what it’s all about.” Scott said she believes the most important priority in West Wilson County is funding growth, and during her terms on the county commission she has “become aware of how the State will place constraints and conditions on how Wilson County can spend its budget. (As a state representative) I’d like to work on easing some of the restrictions so local governments and school systems can use monies as they need.” “Another area that I would like to work on is taking some of the regulatory burdens off of small businesses,” Scott remarked. “Less regulation is a beautiful thing.” Lynn said Monday that she has traveled the area recently speaking with small businesses and larger companies alike, trying to be a sounding board for what businesses need and how she can help them grow. Another Republican, Albert “A.J.” McCall, is expected to announce his candidacy for the District 17 State Senate seat. McCall has scheduled a campaign kickoff event to be held in Carthage on Saturday, Aug. 29. Democrat Aubrey Givens has also announced his intention to run for the offi ce. The primary will be held Aug. 5, 2010.

to discuss the wheel tax at the last meeting. We need to discuss the wheel tax, the adequate facilities tax, the property tax and the sales tax. We need to fi nd the best way to increase our capital growth.” Ash added, “If we vote for this insane resolution, we will kill both the real estate and construction industries as well as the growth of our county.” The commission voted 2-22 against the increase of the impact fee. The fi nal big issue on the commission’s agenda was approving the budget. Teddy Cook, chairwoman of the Wilson County Board of Education, was the only person to speak at the public hearing prior to the meeting and she asked that the school’s budget proposal be left as they requested. The school budget called for $1.4 million, but the budget committee gave them half and put the other $700,000 in a “rainy day fund.” Bush made a motion to amend the budget and add the other $700,000 back from the rainy day fund into the school’s budget. “We provide nearly half of the school’s funding,” Bush said. “The state gives almost half and the remaining 10 percent comes from Federal funding. This money is very important.” “We have been led to believe that next year is going

to be worse economically than this year,” Ash said. “If we put $1.4 million in the school’s budget, we are required by law to match that next year. “If we have to increase this money next year, it will come from a property tax increase.” District 22 Commissioner Heather Scott said that the committee showed good fi scal policy by creating the rainy day fund and that no one was saying that if the schools needed it that they could not have it. “Why hasn’t every department’s budget decreased to make this rainy day fund?” Bush asked. Ash replied saying that the schools were the only department that got $700,000, which was more than most departments. The commission voted 6-18 against adding the rainy day fund money back to the school’s budget and 18-6 in approval of the submitted budget. Other resolutions included giving assistance to low income elderly citizens with State Property Tax Relief (see separate story), allowing public comment during committee meetings, putting committee agendas on the web site for public viewing, and giving an additional appropriation to the Sheriff’s Department. Commission will meet again on Monday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Wilson County Courthouse.

Many images may come to mind when you mention the Amish culture, and there are lots of stereotypes about their people, but one aspect of the Amish lifestyle is for certain: they produce high quality, long-lasting furniture built to stand the test of time. Amish furniture is a

distinctive style of furniture made known for being made entirely of wood - usually no particle board or laminate is used. There is great attention paid to the details of the wood in the furniture making process: attention is paid to the grain of the wood, both in gluing pieces together, and in achieving the desired look of the fi nished piece. Amish furniture is also valued for its sustainability. The Amish craftsmen pride

themselves in their work, and view their product as both a piece of art and to be used for generations. Dan Anderson grew up in Holmes County, Ohio, which reportedly has the largest Amish population in the world (www.visitamishcountry.com). instead of that imported Chinese stuff.” “This is furniture made to last a lifetime,” Anderson said, running his hands over the top of a hand-carved pub table. “This is furniture to pass down to your grandchildren.” Anderson’s store offers furniture ranging from rocking and gliding chairs and bookshelves to entire bedroom suits with startlingly complex wood grain patterns and intricate carving. Pieces can be custom-made to mix and match style and architecture – the style of a dining table can be matched with the chairs belonging to a different style for a completely individual dining set. The pieces are heavy and solid, made of hand-hewn wood in a variety of

colors. Even upholstery can be individually chosen for chairs and sofas. The possibilities are nearly endless, and the endurance of the pieces could span lifetimes. The furniture is made in Ohio and shipped to Mt. Juliet with help from Anderson’s father, who still lives near the Amish country there. Anderson’s history in transportation actually led him here: he was a longtime pilot in Nashville, fl ying for a mission group and various churches, running the fl ight department and fl ying chartered planes. Due to “changes in the economy,” Anderson said, less people were fl ying and that market “dried up,” so he returned to the roots of his home county and the opportunities there. Anderson moved to Mt. Juliet four years ago

and chose the area to open his furniture store “because of the growth.” He said that while there are various places locally and even more online for people to buy furniture, his store is unique in that it is the only one in the area selling “true Amish-made furniture, hardwood and heirloom-quality.” “This is made to last,” Anderson said. “And because it will be around a long time I want people to get what they want, so we can order according to their tastes.” Anderson’s Amish Furniture will hold a Grand Opening on Saturday, August 22, at its location in the Valley Center on N. Mt. Juliet Road. Representatives of the Amish community in Holmes County, OH, will be there. For more information call 615-773-2875.

Economic Preparation and Planning During Road Construction Projects

The economy and our spending habits are affected by many things. Construction and heavy traffi c are issues that affect when and where we shop, visit and spend. Other issues are crime the weather and the overall appeal and comfort of where and when we shop. With the widening of North Mt. Juliet Road over the next two years we will need to plan our travel and shopping accordingly. As we all know, with any major road construction so will come the orange barrels, increased traffi c, gravel and dust. However, these fi ne businesses along this stretch of road will need our patronage more than ever. A two year construction project is sure to create some issues with getting around. The Tennessee Department of Transportation has assured us that they will do all that they can to make this construction project as comfortable and pleasant as possible. And so will the City of Mt. Juliet. Like visiting family, when construction stands between us and visiting family we make the sacrifi ces necessary to go visit. We will need to make the same types of sacrifi ces to visit and patronize our local business family along North Mt. Juliet Road. It may be a little tougher here or there and it may be a little dustier, but the wonderful businesses that you now patronize along North Mt. Juliet Road will be the same wonderful businesses once the construction starts. The only difference will be the construction and need for your patronage more than ever. If we all pull together as one big family during this construction project, these businesses will do just fi ne and prosper. And for our wonderful residents on the North side of Mt. Juliet, we want your travel experience to be a pleasant one as well. The businesses on the South side of Mt. Juliet will need your patronage as well. With good planning and a strategic plan by all, we can make this a seamless experience and transition. When the road widening project is completed this bump in the road will be a distant memory in our rearview mirrors and the road ahead will be smooth sailing. So here are just a few tips to make the process over the next two years a little easier. Try to plan you’re shopping trips during non-rush hour times of the day. For example, avoid Mt. Juliet Road North altogether if you don’t have business along Mt. Juliet Road. Or try to avoid the area when school is starting or letting out for the day. Try and take alternate routes like South Bender’s Ferry/Curd/Clemmons, Beckwith Road and South Greenhill Road. These roads run north and south and can get you around the construction that will be occurring along North Mt. Juliet Road. And last, but certainly not least, we will need to be patient during this process. Try to remember that we are family here in Mt. Juliet and a family pulls together when things get a little tough. We will need to exercise more patience and the need to be gracious, courteous and respectful will be paramount. If we all do this the entire process will pass in no time. The end result will then be better for all. So, in other words, keep on doing what fi ne Mt. Juliet residents are known for. Good people, small town charm and good ole Southern Hospitality. Go Mt. Juliet Go!
