A journey that began in Chicago in March and has led to a television reality series on MTV that premiered Monday night has its roots right here in Mt. Juliet for a young man who has moved both physically and musically from Middle Tennessee to Memphis to Los Angeles, California. Alex Kramer, 20, a Mt. Juliet native and Mt. Juliet High School graduate, currently lives in L.A. after an audition in Chicago landed him on “Making His Band,” a new reality series

that chronicles the journey of Sean “Diddy” Combs as he searches for the ultimate band to take on tour as he promotes his upcoming album, “Last Train to Paris.” Kramer was living in Memphis working as a freelance guitarist and attending the University of Memphis on a full music scholarship when he “went on a whim” to Chicago at the urge of friends to audition for the reality show in March. “I had not intended to go,” Kramer said via telephone from L.A. “I had a session booked for a month in advance for a gospel artist

out of Memphis. I found out (about the reality show audition) through a local drummer in Memphis, that some others were going. We had our own little circuit, our little hub in Memphis.” Kramer cancelled his gig, however, and drove to Chicago, where he waited in line for hours with his Memphis roommate, David Parks, who also made it through to the “Hollywood round.” “It was a nationwide competition,” Kramer said, “with auditions in Chicago, Detroit, L.A. and New York, with rounds and rounds of auditions, and the show

fi lming all the while. For me it was a whole different world, it goes inside the world of b a c k s t a g e , the inside of a backup band. So many people go from raw talent, before artist development, and (the reality show) shows how I was sculpted into being a better musician that deserves the gig.” Kramer said the reality show chronicles what the musicians learned through the process of auditioning. He said of the over 10,000 musicians who attended open call auditions in the four cities just 42 were called to live in the reality show’s house in L.A. He said the reality show is “pretty standard protocol,” but the ultimate prize is exposure by being included in Combs’ backup band and world tour. “They were taping constantly as we worked on various projects,” Kramer said. “We went through the fi re, and I was defi nitely transformed by the process.” Kramer said that while he’s been a musician since a child – beginning with piano lessons that “just didn’t take” – he’s never thought of himself as a solo artist and doesn’t see

himself becoming one. “That’s not my role,” he said. “And I’m just as interested in producing as freelancing. My goal is to brand myself as a guitarist and producer. I’d like to have my hands in a bunch of buckets – music is the only thing I really know, and I want to do it for the rest of my life.” Alex’s parents, RB and Selina Kramer, have been in the music business for all of his life as well – his father has worked in Nashville as a bass player, and his mother sang. They met when she substituted for a singer in RB’s band and were married three months later. They’ve been married for 24 years. “I was raised around music,” Kramer said. “Everyone in my family plays,

Mt. Juliet commissioners voted Monday night to not opt out of a new state law that allows people with permits to carry their weapons into public parks. Local citizens on both sides of the issue attended the scheduled meeting, resulting in a packed room that sparked with confl ict between people with opposing opinions several times. The overwhelming majority of area residents who attended the meeting were in favor of not opting out, meaning people with permits would be allowed to carry guns in “municipal parks, natural areas, historic parks, nature trails, campgrounds, forests, greenways, waterways, or other similar areas,” as the ordinance reads. Over a dozen local citizens, including some from Lebanon, spoke during the citizens comments section of the meeting, and almost all of them were against opting out. District 1 Commissioner Ted Floyd asked several weeks ago for local residents to contact him and tell him “how to vote.” He said Monday night that of the 37 emails and/or phone calls he received 31 people were against opting out and six people were in

approval of it. District 2 Commissioner Will Sellers pointed out that the item was on the agenda because he is a member of the Mt. Juliet Parks and Greenways Board, which unanimously approved a recommendation to opt out of the new law. He noted that he did not see the “justifi cation of having guns in those places.” District 3 Commissioner Ed Hagerty said he felt as if he were “preaching to the choir,” and that he only had two calls from constituents who wanted to opt o u t . He argued that “our parks are safe now, but crime is rising with the Mt. Juliet population.” District 4 Commissioner Jim Bradshaw reminded everyone that Lowe’s is open and commended Mt. Juliet city staff on handling Monday’s gas line break on Mt. Juliet Road. Mt. Juliet Mayor Linda Elam, the “pistol-packing mama,” said she had originally wanted to separate the various areas covered in the new law, but that wasn’t possible to do with the way it is written. She said for her it was “a pretty easy decision,” and she thinks guns should have been allowed in state parks for a long time.

C o m m i s s i o n e r s voted 3 – 2 for Mt. Juliet to not opt out of the new law, with Floyd, Hagerty and Elam voting against the ordinance and Bradshaw and Sellers voting in favor of the ordinance to opt out. Offi cials pointed out that opting out of this law does not affect the Mt. Juliet Little League park, which is privately owned and a non-profi t organization. There will be no second reading, since the ordinance died at the table. In a matter of business not on the published agenda, commissioners voted 4 – 1 on fi rst reading concerning the back sewer billing of many Mt. Juliet businesses in the wake of a West Wilson Utility District mistake that totaled some $71,000. Commissioners agreed to cut the back sewer costs charged by the City by 50 percent; to allow Discount Tire and Enrichment School three months to pay their back charges, Goodworks, WOW Wingery, Marble Slab Creamery, and The Pantry 12 months to pay their back charges, and the Mt. As the new Lowe’s

of Mt. Juliet opens its doors to the community on July 30th, customers will have a special opportunity to help their local Habitat for Humanity. All Lowe’s gift cards purchased that day will be matched dollar-for-dollar (up to $5,000) with Lowe’s in-store credit for Habitat for Humanity of Wilson County. “We are thrilled that Lowe’s is providing the opportunity for their

customers to partner with Habitat in an affordable and signifi cant way,” said Leah McCrady, Director of Development. “This is an excellent opportunity for Habitat to raise money and allow people to experience the joy of giving with something as simple as purchasing a gift card.” “Lowe’s has been a strong partner for Habitat International for many years, and we look forward to building a strong relationship with the new store in Mt. Juliet,” said Tory Tredway, Habitat’s Executive Director. Habitat for Humanity of Wilson County helps to provide decent, safe, and affordable housing for low-income residents throughout the county, and

Juliet City Manager Randy Robertson announced the hire of a new city planner, Steve Foote, who is set to begin in mid to late August. Robertson said Foote was previously

the director of economic development in Gulf Shores, AL. Robertson shared more good news when he

reported that instead of having a $100 – 150,000 surplus in the City budget’s General Fund, the City ended the 2009 fi scal year $1.625 million over what was projected in March. C o m m i s s i o n e r s also voted to name a 2,500 section of the new road at the Beckwith interchange Golden Bear Gateway in honor of Mt. Juliet High School. Gas line break on N. MJ Rd forces offi ces, homes to evacuate

The smell of rotten eggs applied to natural gas was still heavy in the air nearly an hour after the fi rst line broke on N. Mt. Juliet Road around 3 p.m. Monday. Around 15 businesses and several homes on an approximate four-block stretch of the street were evacuated and traffi c blocked off until around 6 p.m. Mt. Juliet City Manager Randy Robertson said at the scene a 4-inch gas line ruptured. He added Monday night that West Wilson Utility District workers, who were digging in the area just in front of the Animal Care Center beside the Mt. Juliet Library where the leak happened, were unsure if the break occurred due to digging or a “seismic shock.” Such an unexpected situation occurred just after the second rupture of the gas line when a man refused to stop at the traffi c blockade heading north on Mt. Juliet Road. An unmarked MJPD car followed as the man drove the truck rapidly before stopping at the US Post Offi ce. The man refused to cooperate and was asked to exit the truck. Although police reports were not available by press time Tuesday, sources on the scene said the man had a “large hunting knife” in his truck, and he was later submitted to tests by WEMA personnel on the scene.

The Mt. Juliet YMCA at the Valley Center will host its Golf Classic on Thursday, August 20, Hermitage Golf Course with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Players may enter in teams of four or as individuals. Cart and Tee Box sponsorships are also available. All proceeds from the tournament benefi t the YMCA’s We Build People campaign. Online registration is available at www.ymcamidtn.org/mt_juliet and the entry fee includes lunch and dinner. Entry fees are $150 for individuals and $600 for a four person team. Early

registration discounts are available through August 5. For more information call (615) 773-5363.

it’s in my blood, I guess. My brother plays piano. In my teen years I was a drummer in some garage bands in Mt. Juliet, but I gravitated eventually to the guitar – it seemed like home, where I wanted to be.” Kramer said his family musical infl uences

and Mt. Juliet garage bands “were everything to my development.” “Mt. Juliet is very musical. There is an exceptional talent level in Mt. Juliet that you just don’t see everywhere, and it shaped who I am and my development.” Kramer added that he worked at local shop Shiloh Music with the Hedges family, “which was huge for me.” He said another important aspect to his musical development was his involvement every week in the Gibson Showcase, which he began when he was 15 years old. Kramer said the “turning point, the cornerstone” of his musical development, what turned him from a blues to a soul musician, was sitting in on the Wooten Brothers shows every Wednesday night at 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville. “They’ve been doing it for years, and are still doing it,” he marveled. “It’s the most amazing show, and it really changed me, sitting and listening to them. I thought, ‘This is what I have to do.’” Kramer added that while his father never “forced” music upon him or even shared the details of his musical career with him, Kramer realizes now that his father instead gave him

the tools to do with what he wished. “He was giving me the tools to pursue music at the best level possible, to do what I wanted to do, not what he wanted me to do. He was giving me the tools to best pursue my dreams.” Kramer is now pursuing his dreams as a freelance accompany guitarist in L.A., where he has settled and is developing his career. He said he misses his “musical family” in Memphis, “but there is only so much opportunity for a long term career there, since there is only a certain level you can reach there, and I feel I’d reached that level professionally.” “This is where all my work is,” Kramer said of L.A. “I have ‘niche’ work, and 90 percent of the major labels launce their tours from here – this is where it all happens.” It’s all happening now for Kramer, and “Making His Band” premiered Monday night on MTV, with an additional showing on Wednesday, July 29, at 6:30 p.m. For more information on listings visit www.mtv.com. Mt. Juliet was chosen as the site of a Tennessee Bureau of Investiga-tion (TBI) mock child abduction exercise on Friday, July 24. The exercise was part of the certifi ca-tion process for the TBI’s Middle Tennessee Child Abduction Re-sponse Team (CART) to make it the fourth team in the country to achieve that status. Members of the TBI worked in conjunction with the Mt. Juliet Police Department, Wilson County Sheriff’s Department, TEMA, the TN Department of Safety, the FBI and US Marshals and were given a mock child abduction sce-nario, conducted the investigation and recovery of the child, a MJPD Police Explorer. The “abduction” took place behind an apartment complex near Charlie Daniels Park, where the TBI CART team found a young girl’s purse and backpack. The mock investigation led them to Charlie Daniels Park, where a search and rescue K-9 unit found the child and law enforcement offi cials “apprehended” two suspects. Floy Turner with Fox Valley Technical College, which implemented the training and certifi cation process, said Friday that her team would evaluate the TBI’s investigation and write the recommendation but she saw nothing that made her think the CART team would not receive its certifi cation. ~ Photo by Tomi L. I cannot overstate the importance of multiplication facts to be done effortlessly by kids. Over the past three years I have noticed that the students that cannot multiply struggle far more than those students that can. So much of math after 3rd grade is based on being able to multiply and divide basic facts quickly. Start having your child count by 3’s, 4’s, 5’s and so on through 12’s. This lets them see how multiplication is just repeated addition. There is no replacing practice of these facts. If a child cannot multiply, they will not be able understand division and both are key to working with fractions and other higher level topics in middle school. Ideally students should have their tables memorized by the end of 3rd grade. So if your child does struggle with multiplication facts, make that a priority this year. There is a wonderful website called www.multiplcation.com that has several games that make it fun to practice. Practice in the car, at home, just about anywhere. Once your child has mastered multiplication the world of math opens up. If you have missed any of the math tips for July and would like a copy, just e-mail us at [email protected] and we will be happy to send you a copy. If you want more information about our program and how it can help your child with the upcoming school year just shoot us an e-mail or call us at 469-2180.

Real Life Encyclopedias I got to thinking recently after having a very long and interesting conversation with my 84 year old father-in-law. Speaking with him is like listening to a real life encyclopedia. The more I listen the more I want to learn and hear. It has been a wonderful revelation and life changing experiences for me for the better. Each time we talk I can’t help but be amazed at all that he has done, accomplished and experienced in his 84 years on this planet. He has experienced and forgotten more than I will know in my lifetime. Since that revelation I fi nd myself wondering what Dad has witnessed in his lifetime. A World War Two Veteran, High School Football Coach, School teacher, City Manager, School Superintendent, Father, Brother and Husband of 63 years to Mom. Now that’s a life to be proud of. What’s even more amazing is his character. I often fi nd myself wanting to emulate the wonderful human being that he is. The way he treats Mom is truly something to behold. Talk about a lesson. This is the way a man should treat his wife. These are the lessons in life that we should all learn from. Dad and all seniors his age came from a totally different generation. Can you imagine what goes through the mind of any person over the age of 80? Think about what they must think about. They were born before television, microwaves, running water in their home, inside plumbing, air conditioning and many of the creature comforts we have today. When I think about how he and mom communicated in the early years before telephones were widely used, I can’t help but picture dad writing mom letters and having to mail them. I then picture dad patiently waiting by the mailbox for moms return letter. Now I sit and think about how mom and dad must feel with all of the technologies of today. Isn’t it amazing how an 84 year old man and his beautiful 80 year old wife have managed to endure all of these changes and what they must be thinking? In a lot of ways all of the technology has been bad. We for the most part no longer write letters because of text messages and e-mails, we don’t really have to be good at math because we have calculators that do it for us, popcorn now takes just two minutes to pop and there is always ice in the ice maker. The technology has oddly turned out to be a pretty good thing for mom and dad though. They don’t have to work near as hard as they used, which is nice. The point of this story was to make you think. Even with all of the technology of today, there is still no better source of information than a human being who actually lived it. A book are computer search can tell you in print that it happened, but a human being that lived it can tell you in person when, where, what and why it happened. Take time to speak and learn from our senior citizens. They are sweet, kind and informative human beings that have been there and don’t that long before most of even thought about it. Most of us only read about the days of outhouses the lack of running water or in-door plumbing, drinking well water, writing letters, no television, the Great Depression, no air conditioning and the lack of electricity. So put the dictionary or encyclopedia down, step away from the computer and get ready for real life lessons from Real Life Encyclopedias. This will be one story you will never forget. In closing, much about work, success with our business, life, learning, and happy living could be improved if we took time to learn from our seniors.

WEEKLY BIBLE VERSE: For he who would love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil. And his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good. Let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous. And his ears are open to their prayers. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. 1 Peter 3:10-12___________________________
