“Practice makes per-fect” is a commonly known adage when applied to most aspects of life. In sports and academics, preparation, practice and persistence of-ten mean the difference be-tween not only success on and off the fi eld or in the classroom but success in netting thousands of dollars in scholarship funds – and in

these tough economic times, many parents are looking for answers to the multiplying questions about how to pay for education and college.

At Mathnasium, owner and educator Jon Willis and his staff begin teaching children as early as age 4 the basics of math and “number sense” in order to begin preparation for math classes and tests as soon as possible.

Willis said that even though the economy is bad at the moment parents should think about prepar-ing now for college testing, and that “kids that prepare over the long haul have bet-ter ACT and SAT scores than those who cram a few weeks before.”

“There’s no substi-tution for preparation, and that doesn’t happen over-night,” Willis said. “If you

want your child to be suc-cessful these things must be focused on at an early age.”

Willis said that in these diffi cult economic times parents are seek-ing ways to help fund their children’s college education, which means applying for scholarships. He said there are fewer chances of being awarded an athletic schol-arship than an academic one, and high college entry test scores are an important part of the scholarship ap-plication process.

Willis gave an exam-ple of one student he spent a year tutoring for ACT preparation. Willis said he watched the student’s math test score rise from 19 to 26 to 32. The highest score possible on the ACT is a 36. That student was awarded a $40,000 scholarship to a well-known, private college in Nashville as well as a full-ride to another local school.

“Parents need to ask themselves if is worth pay-ing a few hundred dollars now for that much money in

scholarships,” Willis said.He added that the Hope

Scholarship is partly based on college entrance scores, and that it takes practice over time to prepare and raise those test scores.

“Preparing for and achieving high scores on these college entrance tests – and in math in general – is like losing weight,” Wil-lis said. “There is no quick fi x, no crash course. Cram-ming and studying for a few weeks or so just before the test may raise your score a few points, but that’s it. It’s not likely to get a student the score he or she needs to get scholarship money.”

Willis added that Mathna-sium is not just about col-lege test preparation – not by a long shot. He said he and his educators are teach-ing children how to learn.

“Our students are learning things that make them think, not just follow a process,” Willis said, tap-ping the lead of his pencil on

Mt. Juliet City com-missioners voted July 6 to hire Lebanon’s city attorney as its municipal judge.

At a special city com-mission meeting Monday night, Lebanon City Attor-ney Andy Wright was unani-mously approved to serve as Mt. Juliet’s new munici-pal judge. The hire comes quick in the wake of Ste-phen Grauberger’s resigna-tion from the post on June 27 via email to city offi cials.

Former Mt. Juliet city judge John Gwin, who currently serves as Division III General Sessions Judge for Wilson, agreed to sit in as an interim judge.

District 1 Commis-sioner Ted Floyd nominated Wright, who was the only nominated candidate.

Wright served 11 years as a Metro Nashville po-liceman, the attorney said, focusing for eight years on undercover drug enforce-ment. In 2001 he graduated from the Nashville School of Law and began practicing in 2002. Wright worked for one year with the Farrar & Bates law fi rm in Nashville, which serves as counsel for the Tennessee Municipal League. Wright then worked in the fi rm of Lowery & Low-ery in Lebanon for one year before becoming the City of Lebanon’s full-time staff at-torney fi ve years ago.

As a city attorney, Wright said, he has experience prosecuting in court and has been involved in the court system “for six or sev-en years.”

Wright said he is familiar with “the need for a produc-tive and effi cient city court.”

“I understand the need to work with the police depart-ment,” Wright said Monday. “I know the need for an ef-

fi cient, productive court docket.”

In the May 13, 2009, edition of the Chronicle, outgoing judge Grauberger voiced his concerns about the Mt. Juliet city court system and how it is con-ducted.

Grauberger took offi ce early this year but experienced some friction with Mt. Juliet Police and city leaders in May, when results from an evaluation of his fi rst 90 days in of-fi ce raised concern about his track re-cord in court rul-ings versus those of Gwin. Grauberger called a meeting with commis-sioners in May, reported in the May 13, 2009, edition of The Chronicle, and said his main objectives in call-ing the meeting was to dis-cuss who has control of the court docket, an analysis of his decisions made from the bench during his fi rst three months versus those made by outgoing Gwin during his fi nal three months on the bench, and who dictated the decision for the number of court dates to be reduced.

Grauberger remarked at that time that City offi cials are currently looking to in-crease the number of police offi cers in Mt. Juliet, which along with the onset of sum-mer months (and restless, driving teenagers) will only increase the number of dockets.

Two local men were arrested recently based on Grand Jury indictments, one stemming from a false robbery report at a Providence restaurant and

the other from an assault at a Mt. Juliet summertime staple: the little league park. Timothy Hubbard of Mt. Juliet was arrested for Filing a False Police Report and Theft over $1000.00 for an incident stemming from a reported robbery at the Taco Bell located in Providence Marketplace, Mt. Juliet police said last week. On February 2, 2009, the MJPD received a call of a robbery at the Taco Bell in Providence. Offi cers and detectives responded after a lengthy investigation determined that a robbery did not take place. Hubbard was indicted by the Wilson County Grand Jury in the June term and arrested for the charges on June 10 without incident. Robert Anthony Payne, 40, of Nashville, was arrested for Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Sexual Assault, and Theft for a November incident where the victim was assaulted at the Mt. Juliet Little League ball park on November 24, 2008. Payne is currently incarcerated in the Tennessee

Department of Corrections on unrelated charges. At the time of the attack Payne was on parole for 50 years on various charges out of Davidson County. Payne was served his warrants by the Wilson County Sheriff’s Offi ce during transport to the Wilson County Jail. “The Mt. Juliet Police Department is happy to announce that we are now auctioning off surplus and seized property of GovDeals.com,” said MJPD Chief Andy Garrett. “Citizens can log on to the website to see surplus and seized property by going to the website www.govdeals.com “ Garrett said citizens can expect to see items posted on a monthly basis, and by following the simple directions on the website can purchase the items through the website. The website allows the City of Mt. Juliet Police Department to reach a broader base of buyers at a lower cost to the city for auctioning off the items. Anyone having questions or comments about the site is encouraged to contact MJPD Detective David Stolinsky at (615) 754-2550.

MJ man charged for fi rst degree murder of wife

Attorney maintains Fox’s innocence

A Mt. Juliet man remains behind bars he was charged with the fi rst degree murder of his wife, though his attorney maintains the man’s innocence. Emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the couple’s home on Dogwood Hills Court on June 30 after reports of a woman falling down a fl ight of stairs. Shelly Allen, 47, was already dead when responders arrived, according to authorities on July 2. Wilson County Sheriff Terry Ashe said in a release last week that at the scene detectives found inconsistencies, and information obtained from the medical examiner revealed Allen died as a result of “multiple blunt force trauma.” Fox was interviewed by detectives from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Department as well as agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Fox indicated in a statement his involvement in the death of his wife. A motive was unknown as of Thursday. Ashe added that the Wilson County Sheriff’s Department

had received a domestic violence call involving the couple in the past, and court suggest that the couple was having marital problems. Fox’s attorney, Stephen Mills, told The Chronicle Tuesday that his client is innocent. “He did not contribute to his wife’s death,” Mills said of Fox. “He found her where she had fallen. He didn’t kill his wife, is what it comes down to.” Mills said that statements made to law enforcement offi cials that led investigators to charge Fox with fi rst degree murder and issue warrants for his arrest were “taken out of context.” “What he said has to be seen in the context of the whole interview,” Mills said. “The warrants paraphrase what he said. I do not believe them to be exact quotes, and I’m not aware of whether or not those interviews were taped.” WCSD Det. Chris Hodge did not return call for comment or an update by press time Tuesday. Fox is being held in the Wilson County jail without bond. His preliminary court hearing is July 16, and Mills said they plan to plead not guilty to the charges.

Robert Jason Burdick, also known as “The Wooded Rapist,” was sentenced to 32 years in prison without the possibility of parole in Davidson County on July 2.

Burdick was convicted of raping a Donelson woman in her home and charged with the rape of more than a dozen women across Mid-dle Tennessee, including a

Mt. Juliet-area teen in the driveway of her home near Hwy 109. Authorities believe Burdick raped women in Davidson, Williamson, and Wilson counties between 1994 and 2008.

Burdick is 39. He still fac-es charges in Metro Nash-ville, Williamson, and Wil-son counties.

Willis added that beginning with children at a young age prepares them for math in middle and high school. He said that by starting early, by learn-ing number sense and understanding the processes of math students feel more comfortable in the subject as they progress in school.

“It’s frustrating enough to have a ton of home-work to deal with, much less a ton of math homework to work through,” the educator said. “And then to not even understand what you’re supposed to do, that’s really frustrating for a kid. And I think that kids these days have enough frustration and pressure on them without adding math to it, not when a parent can pre-vent and alleviate it.”

Our number system is base 10. So learning how the number 10 works is very important for kids. Try this game at home. Take a deck of playing cards. Take out the face cards so you just have ace through 10. Let your child know that the ace represents 1. Lay out 5 or 6 cards face up and ask your child to pick up two cards that add up to 10. At fi rst your child might need a bit of help, depending on grade. But the key here is for the child to start recognizing all the pairs of numbers that add up to 10. In the end, this will pay big dividends down the road because your child will be able to add numbers much faster. Once your child masters fi nding 2 cards, see if they can fi nd 3 cards that add up to 10. After that have them fi nd cards that add up to 15 and then 20. I have been doing this with my son in kindergarten. Try it out and most

importantly make math fun. Make a big deal out of small successes.

Handicapped Parking After numerous questions, complaints and concerns about excessive abuse of handicapped parking spaces and various pleas from individuals who really need to use them, I felt compelled to remind all citizens of the importance of respecting the needs of the handicapped and those needing handicapped parking spaces. Handicapped parking spaces are intended and reserved for handicapped or physically challenged people suffering from a debilitating injury, illness, deformity or limitation. In order to legally park in a handicapped parking space, a driver must display either a handicapped license plate or dash placard. The majority of people using handicap parking spaces are neither handicapped nor disabled. Drivers abusing handicapped parking spaces tend to be people who are either in a hurry, impatient, disrespectful, or just plain lazy. Most violators who abuse handicap parking spaces are good people who just fail to see the seriousness of abusing these spaces. In other words, they don’t put a face with the handicap space. With that in Mind, I want you to picture a handicapped or special needs person circling a large parking lot in search of a handicap parking space. The person circles the parking lot only to discover that all handicap parking spaces are occupied. Now, I want you to picture this same person as they struggle their way across the parking lot, only to fi nd a perfectly healthy person entering a vehicle parked in a handicap parking space illegally. As you can see, this can be very disheartening and troubling to a handicapped or special needs person. Persons abusing handicap parking spaces will normally justify their actions with comments like: “there are more handicap spaces than there are handicapped people,” or “I’m only going to be in the space for a minute.” These are all easy to say comments when you aren’t handicapped, disabled or have a special needs relative or friend. As mentioned before, you must display either a dash placard or handicap license plate to park in a handicap parking space. Please consider the seriousness of violating the handicapped parking space law and help us help those in need of these spaces. In closing, A little respect goes a long way and it is the right thing to.
