Chronic pain, by denition, is a complex disorder (like addiction)

with biological, psychological, and spiritual components. It is

pain that has outlived its useulness. Unlike acute pain, which

immediately signals the nervous system that something is wrong

or needs attention and is relieved once the cause o pain has

been addressed, chronic pain persists or more than six monthsand usually stems rom a source or condition that may not have

an obvious cause, making treatment conusing and rustrating.

With over eighty-six million people in the United States suering

rom chronic pain today, it is easy to see how this is becoming

a major health concern to many within the medical community.

And with over seventy billion dollars spent on treating this pain,

it is not hard to understand why the general public considers

chronic pain a threat to living a ull and vigorous lie.

Part o the challenge many people with

chronic pain ace is nding balanced

    treatment that encourages healing and

    restores unction without resulting in

    dependence on medications. Initially,

    pain-suppressing medicines oer pain

relie and clients enjoy a brie reprieve

rom suering, but oten it is the use othese painkillers that becomes the problem. Soonand usually

quite subtlychronic pain clients are trapped within the hopeless

cycle o chaos caused by drug dependence. The pain has

enguled their lie, and the search or relie has created an

    addiction to drugs.

    dEPENdENCE?

Historically, pain disorders and addictive disorders have been

treated separately. Pain centers may do a good job treating

chronic pain clients, but oten ail to address addiction. Traditional

addiction programs can be eective in treating addictive disease,

but usually do not understand the subtleties o nor provide

appropriate treatment or clients with chronic pain and/or

chronic pain syndrome. Experience has shown that both

approaches are necessary to provide successul treatment in

clients with chronic pain and addictive disease. At LVRC, three

key areas will be attended to concurrently in order to achieve an

outcome that results in recovery. These ocused areas o

treatment are the dependence on drugs, chronic pain, and the

complex interactions between the two conditions. LVRC

specializes in treating the physical and psychosocial problems

associated with both addiction and chronic pain.

Chronic pain treatment philosophies dier vastly among

treatment practitioners. Many addiction counselors believe

the solution lies in complete abstinence rom medications,

while a number o mental health providers see the solution

in psychotherapy, and pain management providers eel that

medications are the correct answer. No wonder chronic pain

clients are aced with the challenge o nding appropriatetreatment and long-term recovery, not only rom pain but also

rom their dependence on medications used to treat the pain.

At Las Vegas Recovery Center, our skilled physicians, addiction

counselors, and mental health practitioners employ the latest

methodologies or treating clients with chronic pain. Ater an

extended time o experiencing chronic pain, clients oten start

to conuse physical pain with emotional pain. They ear they

    will suer i not medicated. We do not dismiss clients pain;

rather, we educate them to the many aspects o the causes o

their pain, helping them to understand the myriad physical and

emotional interactions that contribute to making the pain worseand how they can address these interactions.

We do not try to convince

    clients entering Las Vegas

Recovery Centers pain programthat they are addicts; however,

    ongoing use o opiates or

    other pain-suppressing

    medications oten sets the

stage or dependency and can lead to a dangerous pattern o

addictive use. As a result, many clients may develop symptoms

associated with addiction. These symptoms can sometimes be

subtle, as the web o sel-destruction entangles not only the

person suering rom chronic pain, but amily and loved ones as

well. Our team will work to educate our clients and their

amilies so that everyone can arrive at the same goals: asuccessul treatment outcome and improved quality o lie.

Family members can begin their own recovery journey by

attending our intensive our-day amily educational program

acilitated by the best proessionals in the eld o addiction.

Weekly amily support meetings are also oered. We know that

Finally, one o the most crucial components necessary to ensurea successul treatment outcome is the development o a recovery

plan that includes stringent relapse prevention measures. Leaving

the insulated treatment environment with a well-developed

discharge plan gives clients an opportunity to apply what they

have learned in treatment to the challenges they will ace in

everyday lie. By using the Pain Recoveryworkbook, clients willcomplete exercises to examine those triggers that could

potentially lead to the return to using addictive medication

inappropriately. It is vital that clients continue with the program

learned in treatment so that they can prevent pain rom

    returning to an unmanageable level.

The primary goal o LVRCs Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program is
