Definitions:Chronically absent (missing more than 10% of school over the course of the academic year) Moderately Absent (missing between 5-9% of school over the course of the academic year)Excessively Absent (missing more than 20% of school over the course of the academic year)
Calculations:1) Determine the number of students who are chronically, moderately or excessively absent by calculating the number of days absent/the number of days enrolled for each student fromthe specified population (e.g. a particular grade or all elementary or middle or high school students in the district)2) Determine the % of chronic absence by dividing the # of students from the specified population who meet the absence criteria by the total # of students enrolled from that specified population.Note: For Middle and High School, if absences are available by period, then need to define how many periods = 1 day of absence. One suggestion is to use 6 periods = 1 day of absence.School Districts could modify depending upon what makes sense given their school schedule.

Timing of Analysis:This table is aimed at helping a district review trend data for each of these academic school year. The template, however, could be modified so a district could conduct analysis at the end of every 2 months or at least the end of every semester so that action could be taken in a more timely manner.
