STATEMENT

N. Bhushan Mandava. I have been very active in American Chemical Society (ACS) for more than 30

years. At the national level in the ACS, I served on the Committee for Economic and Professional

Affairs (CEPA); on the Committee on Meetings and Expositions (M&E); and now I am on the

Committee on International Activities (IAC). At IAC, I serve on the subcommittee for Asia and the

Pacific Region which is involved in establishing Country Chapters for ACS in Thailand, Korea and

South Africa, and China. I helped IAC for the formation of the Chapter in India.

At the Regional level in Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting (MARM), I served as the Chair of the

Steering Committee, and organized regional meetings for MARM and SERMAC, among other

activities.

At the local level in CSW, I served as the Chair of the Publications Committee that is responsible for

the publication of the Capital Chemist, and also served as the Chair of the Councilors Committee,

among others. I received several awards given to CSW members including prestigious Hillebrand

Prize, and also Ann Nalley Award from MARM. I had the distinction to serve as the President when

CSW celebrated its Centennial.

I have been a Career Consultant for more than 25 years advising ACS members who are beginning

their careers and those considering mid-career changes. I also serve as a Chemistry Ambassador for

promoting chemistry to public. In recognition of my services to science and the profession , I was

elected as the Fellow of the American Chemical Society.

Having served as CSW President and on most of the CSW’s committees and also at the key ACS

Committees, I look forward to continuing the effort for a stronger ACS which will continue seeking

improved services for the members. This will require Councilors experienced in the issues.

I am honored to be nominated to serve as a Councilor for CSW. It has been a privilege to work with

the dedicated chemists on CSW Executive Committee and Board of Managers since joining the board

in late 2015.

I think it is critically important to encourage and develop young and early career chemists, which has

led me to work with student chapters in the division of polymer chemistry (POLY) as well as CSW

through the young chemists committee and project SEED.

I hope to continue to serve the chemists of the DC area and represent the needs of our section to ACS

governance. Again, thank you for the nomination and I humbly ask for your vote.

STATEMENT

It would be an honor to continue to serve on the CSW Board of Managers, in the position of councilor,

and I ask for your vote. If elected, I would like to focus my efforts on implementing the new strategic

plan that was developed by CSW in 2016, to revitalize CSW's activities and participation. I would also

like to strengthen CSW's environmental/sustainability-related outreach and events. I have served on

the CSW board since 2010, including two terms as secretary, and am active on the ACS Committee on

Environmental Improvement where I am co-leading organization of a June 2018 workshop on the

integration of green & sustainable chemistry into the supply chain. Most recently I have been working

with the National Capital Area Chapter of the Society of Toxicology to organize a joint day-long

symposium with CSW on October 13, 2017 on TSCA: Best Practices in Toxicology, Risk, and Chemical

Management Strategies. Professionally, my interests are in developing safer and more sustainable

chemicals and products, with focus on green chemistry, alternatives assessment, hazard, exposure,

risk, life cycle, and sustainability.

STATEMENT

I am asking for your vote for Manager. For much of my career I have volunteered for the Chemical

Society of Washington and currently am serving as Councilor, Secretary of the ACS Committee on

Chemical Safety and Coordinator of the High School Chemistry Olympiad. Why? Because even as a

retired chemist, I regard ACS and CSW as my fundamental professional organization that has three

important goals: to provide relevant services to its members, to encourage students at all levels in

chemistry, and to promote public awareness of the important contributions of chemistry and related

areas to modern life. CSW has been going through a process of reinvigoration to better serve its

members and promote outreach. If elected Manager, I would work for and support the continuation of

this process so that as many CSW members as possible will have increased benefit from their

membership.

STATEMENT

I am honored to be nominated to serve as Manager for the Chemical Society Washington. My initial

introduction to the ACS was as a recipient of the Women’s Chemist Committee and Eli Lilly Travel

Award in 2008. With this award, I was able to attend the 2009 Spring National ACS meeting in Salt

Lake City. During that time I had the extreme privilege to work with an amazing group of chemists

committed to developing their graduate research. I was inspired to meet scientists of immense

intelligence, diverse backgrounds and varying career levels. It was remarkable to see my colleagues’

work ethic and persistence and I was humbled by the stories shared about the challenges and victories

along our different career paths. If elected as Manager for CSW, I would like to engage scientific

leaders to share their career experiences to foster conversations and encourage knowledge transfer. I

am also interested in organizing career development programs focused on effective ways to network

and techniques to assist in aligning the members work skill sets with current or future advancement

opportunities.

STATEMENT

Thank you CSW for considering me for the Board Manager position. I honed my skills as a leader and

organizer in the Georgia Local ACS Section nearly 15 years ago. While in Atlanta, GA, I was

mentored as a leader and became active in the Georgia Local Section Minority Affairs Committee

(MAC). Using my experience and connection to private industry, for 8 years, I helped MAC organize

the largest Chemists Networking event, bringing together ~45 Chemists annually. MAC won several

ACS Chemluminary Awards while I was on the committee including 1 while I was chairman for best

Minority Affairs Committee. Working with the ACS during graduate school cultivated my passion for

advocacy, policy, service, education, and equity and equality. Since moving to DC to follow my

passions, I have channeled my passions into the nonprofit industry and enjoy the machinations of

nonprofit governance and management. Currently, I serve on the national ACS Committee on

Minority Affairs. I also serve as the Executive Director for EE2, a community based nonprofit in

southeast DC, and I am an adjunct faculty member at Northern Virginia Community College.

STATEMENT

I am honored by this nomination to continue to serve on the Board of Managers of CSW. I

was the co-Chair of the education committee of CSW since January of 2017 and if re-elected, I would

like to continue to serve and bring important contributions to the education and outreach areas. I

would also like to continue my efforts with grants for opportunities between academia and CSW. I was

a part of a small cohort who worked on the CSW’s mission and vision at the Strategic Planning retreat

during summer of 2016.

I have served as an Enthusiast, a Chemistry Ambassador and a Science Coach as recently as the

academic year 2016-2017. I strongly believe in the power of Chemistry Outreach and would love to

support and strengthen it in the schools and the community at large. I have received the “Local Section

Outreach Volunteer of the Year “award by CSW in 2015 and have been featured in the ACS video

production, celebrating the 25th anniversary for the National Chemistry week. As the Advisor for the

STEM ED Community Club at Montgomery College, I engage my students in ACS and community

STEM events and promote Chemistry and Chemical education such as the annual “Rockville Science

Day”, “Sonya Kovalevsky Day”, “Frontiers in Science and Medicine Day” and many other STEM

volunteer events. I have received the “Faculty Outstanding Service Award” by Montgomery College in

2010 and “NISOD Excellence Award” in 2011 and in 2015, I was awarded “The Maryland professor of

the Year” award by CASE and the Carnegie Foundation.

I would love to continue serving the important mission of the Chemical Society of Washington and

support the chemical community in the DC area.

STATEMENT

I am honored to be nominated for the positon of Manager of the Chemical Society of Washington, DC.

I have been a national ACS member since 1992. I have used my background as a research chemist for

over 20 years to develop and lead informal STEM education outreach programs in the community

with a primary focus on diversifying the Chemical Sciences. Since moving to the Washington, DC area

in August of 2015 to serve as an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the National Institute

of Justice Office of Investigative and Forensic Sciences, I have regularly attended CSW meetings and

events. Additionally, since moving to the area, I have continued to mentor undergraduate and

graduate students in Chemistry at the local universities. As part of NOBCChE leadership, I worked on

the team to draft and implement the MOU between NOBCChE and ACS that was signed at the

Minority Affairs luncheon last year. As part of the NOBCChE Executive Board, I will continue to

work with both organizations to build collaborative efforts to support the next generation of chemists

from diverse backgrounds. The CSW is a strong and vibrant chapter that upholds the ideals of

excellence in Chemistry, chemical education, and advocacy that I will continue to uphold in the office

of Manager. As Manager I will focus on the following areas: 1) Expanding awareness of science policy

career options for Chemists, 2) Diversity and Inclusion in the Chemical Sciences, 3) Expanding

outreach and mentoring efforts to engage and support students from diverse backgrounds, and 4)

Enhancing exposure and awareness of Chemistry-related careers for K-12 teachers and students.
