“Invisible we see you, Christ above us, with earthly eyes we see above us clouds or sunshine, but with the eye of faith we know you reign: instinct in the sun ray, speaking in the storm,

warming and moving all creation, Christ above us...All is flux; turn but a stone and an angel moves. Underneath are the everlasting arms.

Unknowable we know you, Christ beneath us.” The Rev. George MacLeod, founder of the Iona Community, Scotland

CONFESSION OF SIN (Book of Common Order of the Church of Scotland, 1994) Rev. Paul E. GilmoreMerciful God, you made us in your image, with a mind to know you, a heart to love you, and a will to serve you. But our knowledge is imperfect, our love inconstant, our obedience incomplete. Day by day we fail to grow into your likeness; yet you are slow to be angry with your children. For the sake of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Saviour, do not hold our sins against us, but in your tender love, forgive.

TIME OF SILENT CONFESSION… KYRIE ELEISON James MacMillan

To Our Members, Friends and Visitors: A Warm Welcome and Invitation! “If after the kirk, ye bide a wee, there’s some would like to speak to ye: If after the kirk, ye rise and flee,

we’ll all seem cold and stiff to ye, The one that’s in the seat wi’ ye is stranger here than you, maybe: All here has got their fears and cares, add them your soul unto our prayers, Be thou our angel unawares.”

The Cèilidh (or Scottish Celebration) will take place immediately following the service in the sanctuary. The congregation and our guests are invited to enjoy refreshments and shortbread in the back of the sanctuary and take a seat to enjoy the Cèilidh. We will then follow the Pipes and Drums out of the Sanctuary to the Common Room and Terrace where the luncheon and Address to the Haggis will take place.

Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,Great chieftain o' the puddin'-race!Aboon them a' ye tak yer place,Painch, tripe, or thairm:Weel are ye wordy o'a graceAs lang's my airm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,Your hurdies like a distant hill,Your pin wad help to mend a millIn time o need,While thro your pores the dews distilLike amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour dicht,An cut you up wi ready slicht,Trenching your gushing entrails bricht,Like onie ditch; And then, Oh what a glorious sicht,Warm-reekin, rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an strive:Deil tak the hindmaist, on they drive,Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyveAre bent like drums; Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive,'Bethankit' hums.

Is there that ower his French ragout,Or olio that wad staw a sow,Or fricassee wad mak her spewWi perfect scunner,Looks down wi' sneering, scornfu viewOn sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him ower his trash,As feckless as a wither'd rash,His spindle shank a guid whip-lash,His nieve a nit:Thro bloody flood or field to dash,Oh how unfit!

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,The trembling earth resounds his tread,Clap in his wallie nieve a blade,He'll make it whissle; An legs an arms, an heads will sned,Like taps o thrissle.

Ye Pow'rs, wha mak mankind your care,And dish them out their bill o fare,Auld Scotland wants nae skinking wareThat jaups in luggies:But, if Ye wish her gratefu prayer,Gie her a Haggis!

The Committee for the 44th Annual Scottish Heritage Church Service has worked long and hard and we are grateful to them: Jeff and Carol Barbour; Carole Clarkson; Linda and Randy Ferguson; Rev. Paul Gilmore; Scott and Susan Gress; Peggy Hooker; Allan and Mary Jay; Malcolm and Nicki Keers; Anne Kniffin; Robert and Nancy LaBadie; Rev. Kathryn Kibbie Laird; Kirk and Molly Ludtke; Dougal and Becky Munro; Tom and Sandy Nissley; Victoria Shields; Wendy Stahl; Steve and Jennifer Van de Graaf.

“THE KIRKIN’ O’ THE TARTANS”The Scottish Heritage Service is a worship service of traditional content for all people, but with special significance for Scots. Central to its theme is the “Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans”, a presentation of the Tartans of the Scottish Clans, symbolizing rededication of the families of all nationalities everywhere to God’s service. It is further characterized by the beauty of Scottish music, the color and dignity of its presentation, and the close bond of fellowship sensed by all who attend.

Tartan symbolism is akin to that of flags, its distinctive, cross-lines patterns representing specific Scottish clans, regions and regiments. In 1745, with Scots divided over monarchial matters, those following “Bonnie Prince Charlie” were defeated in the Battle of Culloden. Harsh repression of Scottish militancy and national identity followed, including the outlawing of tartan garments, a shocking condition that continued nearly forty years.

With the triumph of righteousness over fear, the repressive laws were abandoned and the tartan restored as lawful garb. In the present century the tartan, identifying the wearer with his or her clan, region or Scottish regiment, is recognized worldwide as a symbol of Scotland.

Tuesday Morning Biblical Study

Bible Stories You Didn't Hear in Sunday School – New Testament

Tuesday mornings, through June 13, 11am in the Common Room.

Taught by the Rev. Mary Marple Thies.

How well do you know stories about the early church?  Try answering these

questions.  What happened to the couple who renigged on their stewardship

pledge?  Or the man who fell asleep in church?  How were important decisions

made?  Who was Priscilla and why is she remembered?  What about Barnabas?

On Tuesday mornings at 11 AM we will be looking at stories from Acts that you

never heard in Sunday School.

Please join us.
