Pastor’s Corner
“Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” This is John the Baptist’s call to the people of Judea. It is based on a very practical political wisdom. When the King came to visit outlying areas of the Kingdom, the people would go out and fill the potholes in the road and smooth the way for the King’s chariot. They would do this because when the way wasn’t smooth, the King was in a rotten mood from being jostled and would often take out his ill temper on the people he visited. If humans have the wisdom to do this for earthly kings, don’t you think we should do it for the King of the Universe? How can we prepare the way of the Lord? What are the bumps in the road that we can repair? The bumps that make it difficult for the Lord to visit us are our sins of course. And all sin is a defect in love, either love of God or neighbor. Quite frequently, the lack of love in our life is caused by fear or insecurity. We may be afraid that we won’t have enough (of anything) if we love unconditionally. We may be afraid that our love may be rejected or not respected (it might). We may simply think that we have to take care of ourselves (our families and friends) first, and then we might be able to help others if we have excess. Although this is true to a small extent, the irony is that if we try to hold on to “things” or “attitudes” that are not loving we end up losing them in the long run. But if we freely give them away in love we will never lack love. For instance, we may think that illegal immigrants from Mexico are costing our country too much in jobs or health care. But they are simply our brothers and sisters who are trying to make a decent living, and they do contribute to our country. If we can’t love them, then we can’t love Jesus, who was an immigrant refugee in Egypt. I don’t think it would be smart to argue this one with Jesus! He has the inside track through his own experience. Advent is too short a time to fill in all our potholes. But we can do it in a lifetime, beginning today, knowing that God is indeed with us. Amen!
The Ladies Luncheon: is Tuesday December 8th in the Adult Ed. room at 11:30. Please bring a salad to share and invite a friend. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet and make new friends. Jesus trooly loves you! See you there!

Helping H.O.P.E.
A poster board is set up in the church lobby showing samples of the items we are collecting for special Christmas gift bags to be delivered to a local Longmont shelter on Christmas Eve.
In the list below are the items that we would like to include in the gift bag. Anything that you can contribute will help make for a warmer Christmas for the homeless. You can drop items off, UNWRAPPED, in the box by the poster. Please feel free to call Vivian Baker with any questions 720 988 3004.
Items to be collected: ~Waterproof warm gloves ~Moisture wick socks ~Chapstick ~Premium chocolate bar ~Sample size deodorant. ~Body Warmers for their sleeping bag ~$5 McDonald's gift cards ~Foot Warmers
~Base layers, top or bottom, sizes medium and large ~Shower vouchers (purchase in the office) ~Washer Dryer Voucher's (purchase in the office)
Deadline for the items is Sunday, December 13th. Thank you in advance for your kindness and help!
Baby, It’s Cold Outside!
With the advent of cold weather, H.O.P.E. (the local homeless outreach project) is experiencing a surge in demand for blankets and sleeping bags. Limited finding only allows the volunteers to distribute a maximum of two sleeping bags each night. The list of those needing a sleeping bag always outstrips the supply.
To address this need, the Knights of Columbus Council #1313 will contribute half of the proceeds from the Sunday, December 13th, parish breakfast to H.O.P.E. for the purchase of sleeping bags. Please consider supporting this effort by attending the breakfast and/or making a donation of cash or good, used sleeping bags and blankets to the Knights of Columbus. Contact Phil West at #303-772-0701 or [email protected] for additional information or to arrange for a pick-up of donated sleeping bags or blankets.
Thanks for supporting your Knights of Columbus.
A More Proper Proper Discussion From last week we know that the Propers, including the: Introit, Gradual, Alleluia (or Tract), Offertory, and Communion refer to the parts of the Mass that change from liturgy to liturgy. There are five sung Propers and we currently replace every single one of them with something else. Are we allowed to do that? Actually, yes. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says:
In the Dioceses of the United States of America there are four options for the Entrance Chant: 1. the antiphon from the Missal...blah, blah, blah; 2. the antiphon with its Psalm of the Graduale
Simplex...yadda yadda; 3. a chant from another collection of Psalms and
antiphons...yep, got it; 4. another liturgical chant that is suited to the sacred
action, the day, or the time of year, similarly approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop. There it is!7
So who cares whether we replace the propers if it’s allowed according to the books and the rules and the things? Well, Pope St. John Paul II cared, Pope Benedict XVI cares, Pope Paul VI and Pope Pius X cared; the list goes on and on. Remember that in the liturgy “the assembly should prepare itself to encounter its Lord and become ‘a people well dis-posed’”8. “In the celebration of the liturgy, Sacred Scripture is extremely important. From it come the lessons that are read and explained in the homily and the psalms that are sung”9. The Old Testament, New Testament, and Gospel readings for each day are all prescribed by the Church. Likewise, the Church prescribes psalm texts for the Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Offertory, and Communion that relate to the salvation event of the day. By replacing these texts we are missing all of this important material. So what, we still get the good stuff! Yes, but we miss the perspective of the everyday person. Being a Christian is a life full of struggle, doubt, and ridicule. The psalms are filled with an accounting of this struggle. They let us know that we are not alone. They give a sense of the universal Church not only across the globe but across time. We’re missing out on the text that validates our fear and renews our hope and conviction!

-Would you like to get to know other parishioners? -Are you new to Saint Francis?
“Meat and Greet” Potluck meals in homes will begin in January. To get the party started and answer any questions plan to attend the group kick-off potluck on Saturday, December 12 at 5:30 (after Mass) in parish hall. We look forward to some fun as we gather and get to know other adults in our St. Francis community.
When: one meal in each of these months: January, February, March and April. What I need to do: So easy, just one of those months you will have the meal at your house and be the host. The other months you bring your assigned dish. If you can’t host, sign up to substitute. What if I am busy during one of the months: We will have a substitute list. The host is responsible for getting the sub, so tell the host quickly if you cannot come. Please Note: Meat and Greet meals are for adults only. Sorry, but many homes cannot accommodate large numbers. The parish plans other meals that include families throughout the year.

TRAVEL PLANS – We have also been in Doubt, but not recently. It’s a confusing place to go, and we try not to visit there too often. I think a distant relative lived there ages ago, we never knew him, and can’t even remember his name. Thomas, maybe?
BILL’S ADVENTURES – It felt very good to be safe and warm with his family; but Bill was very quiet on the way home. He knew he had made some poor choices; and the outcome could have been way different. He also never realized how many friends and even strangers who were there for him and Pudge. They were his lifeline! He realized that even more importantly God was his lifeline! He had never thought to pray while he was on that mountain. He only relied on his own ideas and strength. So prayers of thanks were what he was now praying.
RE CHALLENGE – When you think you have everything in control, know that if you reach out you’ll find that God is with you; and he really IS in the Captain’s seat; or in this case, the climber’s path.
Respect Life Outreach: We have many ways to show our Respect for Life this holiday season with contributions to the Salvation Army, OUR Center, and Nursing Home projects; as well as the two current H.O.P.E. projects. Thank you for all you have done for these programs! An ongoing need is the Meals of Mercy program. Please consider donating a grocery or restaurant gift card. Sometimes a meal preparer isn’t available when a need exits, or the meal preparer simply needs some help too. Thank you to all who have already contributed to this ministry!
Prayer: We also show our Respect for Life in “covering the Prayer Tree with love”, and let’s continue to pray fervently for an end to abortion.
