Christmas Market The Christmas Market features several decorated stalls offering tourists a wide range of regional products, handicrafts and foods that are typical of the Christmas season, including plants, fruits, Madeira Wine, sugar cane honey and its derivatives. The Christmas Market will be held at Avenida Arriaga Central Walkways, starting on 1st December and at Praça do Povo, on 12th December.

Nativity Scene 2019Twelve wooden life-size figurines make up this regionally themed nativity scene, depicting the birth of Baby Jesus. An open-air Christmassy garden decorated with plants and flowers showcasing the variety of Madeiran flora. Here you will find some decorative ornaments and a wicker chair inviting everyone to take a picture.

Children’s Christmas – Municipal GardenThe Municipal Garden is decorated exclusively with imaginative Christmas-themed elements ideal for Children. Entertainment includes face painting and balloon modelling. Other activities include the “Let’s decorate the Christmas tree” initiative, which consists of a 5–meter high Christmas tree to be decorated by local school children, and the “Foi aquintrodia” project, which includes various traditional games for the youngest children.

10h30 Initiative: “Let’s decorate the Christmas Trees” (trees on exhibition until January,5th 2020).

Ethnographic Village Installed in Largo da Restauração, the Ethnographic Village presents live examples of local traditions, crafts, food, folklore and two traditional nativity scenes, promoting the tangible and intangible culture of Madeira. There are two types of traditional nativity scenes: the traditional Madeiran nativity scene located outside, which reproduces the human and natural landscape with vegetation, terraces, valleys, ravines, little houses and haystacks; and the tiered nativity scene, with its characteristic elements such as the Child Jesus, bows, fruit, grains and bread, amongst others.

Childbirth MassesThe religious celebrations preceding the 25 of December begin with a “novena” called “Childbirth Masses”, which are celebrated in the early hours of the morning from the 16 to the 23 of December. During the religious ceremony the faithful sing popular chants in honour of the Mother of God and the Child Jesus, whose birth is approaching.At the end of the Mass, people gather in the churchyard to socialise and enjoy local folklore groups while tasting regional delicacies such as “broas de mel” (honey biscuits), coffee, liqueurs and the typical “poncha”.

New Year’s Eve fireworks displayThe New Year’s Fireworks display will last around eight minutes and is distributed over 38 firework stations in the Funchal amphitheatre (31 stations), in the sea (5 stations) and in Porto Santo Island (2 stations).One of the most important tourist drawcards in Madeira, in 2006 this magnificent show was internationally recognised by the Guinness Book of Records, as the “Largest Fireworks Display in the World”.

“Cantar os Reis” – Twelfth Night Songs The New Year’s festivities last until mid–January. During this period, masses are celebrated in praise of Child Jesus and mangers are kept in many of Madeiran households. On 6 of January the arrival of the Three Kings is celebrated with the famous “Bolo-Rei”, which has a “fava” bean and a small prize hidden inside. Tradition says that the person whose slice contains the bean must buy the cake on the following year and the person with the prize will have to buy the drinks. In Funchal’s Municipal Garden, on 5 of January at 21h00, takes place a public concert under the theme “Twelfth night songs” in a show that intends to revive this popular local tradition.

In order to promote Christmas traditions, it will be held a series of workshops depicting delicacies and products that characterise the Madeira Christmas and New Year’s season. The workshops will take place between the 19 of December and the 4 of January (except on 22,24,25,26 and 29 December, as well as on 1 January).Here one can learn how to make several regional delicacies such as the Honey Cake, biscuits, Santana´s bread, among other typical Christmas recipes, Christmas floral arrangements, table decorations, and many other Madeiran traditions.
