REPERTOIREG.F. HÄNDEL – MESSIAH

Part I: The prophesy and realization of God’s plan to redeem mankind by the coming of the Messiah

and from Part II & III: Hallelujah Worthy is the Lamb & Amen

Messiah, an oratorio that is as moving as it is hopeful and has enriched the lives of all who have heard it. It has been said, “for the first time in musical history the mighty drama of human redemption was set to music.”

The Messiah unquestionably holds the position of most frequently performed choral masterpiece – a unique distinction it has maintained for nearly 270 years! Every Christmas season countless concert halls and churches present this magnificent work. I know many choirs will find it timely to perform this work in their Christmas program and then to bring it to London to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Händel’s death.

ERIC DALE KNAPP Eric Dale Knapp is a dynamic conductor whose commitment and energy empower the musicians he leads to give performances that stir the souls of his audiences. Maestro Knapp’s mastery of the repertoire spans the full spectrum, from fresh, authentic interpretations of traditional works to visionary performances of multimedia works of the new millennium. A versatile musical leader, equally adept with Classics and Pops, Knapp’s finely honed ability to communicate through both gesture and speech place him at the forefront of the rising conductors of his generation.

In 2001 Mr. Knapp’s Carnegie Hall debut met with critical acclaim. International appearances have included being the first American to perform a series of organ recitals at the International Bach Festival in Warsaw, Poland; being guest conductor for the International Advent Sing in Vienna, Austria; conducting the Vratsa Philharmonie of Bulgaria in the Bulgarian premiere of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring Suite; and serving as guest conductor with the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonie and Kromeriz Chamber Orchestra in the Czech Republic, and the Basel Academic Orchestra in Switzerland. His successful concerts in such distinctive concert environments as Carnegie Hall, The Sydney Opera House, Shanghai’s Oriental Art Center, The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Dvorak Hall and Vienna’s famed Musikverein have given him a special place within the international musical community.

Knapp’s wealth of experience spans the breadth of the musical world, having served as Music Director and Sr. Organist at Faith Lutheran Church in Des Moines, IA and as Conductor-in-Residence at MidAmerica Productions, where he conducted the New England Symphonic Ensemble and Festival Chorus annually at Carnegie Hall. He has enjoyed success as a Music Educator at elementary, secondary and collegiate levels, and as a conductor of community and professional choral and orchestral organizations. Mr. Knapp is a graduate of Drake University where he was appointed a Drake Fellow in conducting and has studied at The Juilliard School. He has pursued professional study with such luminaries as Jorge Mester, John Alexander, Helmuth Rilling, Aimee Beckmann-Collier, Vincent LaSelva, Kirk Trevor, Tsung Yeh, Gary Fagan, and Johannes Schlaefli. Carnegie Hall has recognized Mr. Knapp as one of the “rising generation of choral and orchestral leaders,” inviting him to take part in their annual Professional Conductors’ workshops with Robert Shaw.

Most recently Mr. Knapp conducted the triumphal closing concert of the Perform in Harmony with Olympic Spirit Festival celebrating the 2008 Beijing Olympics which featured 600 singers with the KI North American Festival Chorus, the Youth Chorus of the Tianjin Conservatory and the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra on July 3, 2008. Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, considered to be an international symbol of consolation and hope, concluded the performances.

George Frideric Händel was born in Germany in 1685. In 1712 he moved to England and settled there until his death in London on April 14, 1759. The first performance of the Messiah took place on 13 April, 1742 in Dublin; Easter was 18 April that year. The following spring, Messiah’s London premiere occurred on 23 March, also Lenten season.

Situated on the south bank of the river Thames, Southwark Cathedral is a monument of antiquity that has been the home of Christian worship for over a thousand years for historical greats like Shakespeare, Chaucer and John Harvard. Located in one of the busiest and most historically rich districts in London, the Southwark Cathedral is located only steps from the world famous London Bridge.

Home to the Cathedral Choir of men and boys, founded in 1848,the Cathedral has held performances for Pope John Paul II, and still is home to both a girls and boys choir who continue to contribute to Southwark’s legacy for years to come.
