Advent Worship Services

Set For Thursday Evenings

A beautiful tradition here at St. Olaf is to gather for worship at 5:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. each year on Christmas Eve. These candlelight worship services are a beautiful way to observe the true meaning of Christmas - the birth of Christ, our Lord. We hope you will be able to attend one of these Christmas Eve services this year and invite your friends, neighbors, and family members to attend with you.

Your offering envelopes for 2014 will be available on tables in the Centen-nial Room for you to pick up later this month (after the Bazaar). Everyone will be assigned a new number on them so please do not use your older envelopes after January 1st, 2014. This is very important if you want to receive the credit on your giving statement, otherwise someone else will get the credit on their statement. It will also help to write your name on the envelopes so that I can double check the number.

Please pick up yours by Sunday, Dec. 29. Those envelopes which are not picked up by that time will have to be mailed out, which will add to the operating expenses of our congrega-tion. Deadline for Year-end Giving is December 31

The church financial books will close on December 31, 2013. Any offerings which our members wish to be cred-ited to 2013 giving records will have to be received in the church office by noon Tuesday, Dec. 31.

WELCA Report

Blessings to all as we begin the Ad-vent Season. Our stewardship projects continue with quilting and collecting food for the food bank. Prairie Heights is in need of items for the Freedom Center. This is an area where the clients can spend leisure time. Please leave any donated items in marked box in the Centennial Room. Darci has a list of needs in the church office. The following are come of the items on their wish list: microwave popcorn, health snack packs/bars, variety of teas, coffee, creamer, crackers, puzzles (100 piece), easy games, colored paper, scissors, and glue. Plans are in place for the Christmas Bazaar on Dec. 7th. Sign-up sheets to help in different areas are in the Centennial Room. Please consider helping on Friday, Dec. 6 to set up and at 5:00 p.m. to package our baked items. Saturday, Dec. 7 there are many areas where help is needed. Thursday, Dec. 12 the WELCA

Christmas Party will be held at 12 noon with a potluck followed by a program and installation of offi-cers. Thank you to all who have accepted a leadership position in WELCA. Lydia Circle will host and Deborah Circle is in charge of pro-gram. Sunday, Dec. 8 at 10:00 a.m. the executive board will meet to set up a proposed budget for 2014. If anyone has ideas for mission pro-jects locally or globally, please let me know. The results of the 25th Anniversary Appeal for WELCA has raised $141,000 to date. One half of this supports the missions of the Women of the ELCA, and the other half supports the malaria cam-paign. St. Olaf WELCA contributed our lefse sales from last spring. Thank you again for all those who help with the mission of WELCA.

Lay Ministry met Sunday, November 10th. Members present were Florene Rogne, Deloris Johanson, Stella Pa-pachek and Anna Schemionek. Anna is new to Lay Ministry this month. Ron Miller was not present. Last month the committee spent some time thinking about people that are home bound. Cards were sent to these people asking if they would like to have communion brought to them in their home or maybe a home visit. They were requested to go through the church office. Of that first mailing the church office did get one re-quest. This month we did a more exten-sive review of the church members and some additional names were added to our list. Stella will visit with Darci before sending out any additional letter. Stella and Deloris visited with some of our church members that live at Park Manor. They were asked if there were things that could be done that would make our wor-ship better for them. Some things that were discussed were: 1) Are there hym-nals that have larger print? (No) 2) Rides to church on Sunday. What is the status of the Senior Citizen Bus? Can people volunteer to give rides? Are there other handicap vehicles available for wheel bound members? Taxi cab availability? 3) Location of short pews that would be available for wheel chairs. 4) Hearing aid devices for the hard of hearing members. Florene had one home communion this month. Men’s Club: The men of St. Olaf served the annual lutefisk and meat ball supper Sunday, October 20th. There were 409 people served this year which is the largest number in many years. We netted about $3000 from the supper. WELCA Report: Pastor Jeff led the Bible Study at the November meeting. Anna Circle was in charge of the program which included a presentation by Russ Pearson, “Imperfect Harmony”, on the Lutheran Book of Worship and the Thank Offering Service by circle members. Lunch was served by the Deborah Circle.

The rummage sale was held October 12th with rolls and doughnuts served for morn-ing coffee, and the noon meal included barbeques and pie. Lefse for the Christ-mas Bazaar to be held December 7th was made October 28th and November 4th and more will be made November 18th. The Christmas Party will be December 12th with Lydia circle hostesses and Deborah Circle in charge of the program. Stewardship report: 53 cards were re-

turned. Reviewed and discussed budget. Music and Worship: The worship and music committee met at the church. Pre-sent were Russ, Lynda, Betty and Janice. Russ reported that he went to Larry Thiele’s ordination at the Dakota Oyate Lutheran Church. We discussed how we could get more people to sing in the choir and are wondering if there was some way to have a children’s choir practice during the senior choir practice so more young parents can sing. We will be asking around for congregation interest. Russ brought up that the church needs a new PA system. We need to find a company to come and tell us what we need to up-grade the microphones and sound sys-tems (the number & flexibility of the micro-phones is not adequate. It would also improve the radio broadcast. Which com-mittee should be responsible – worship & music or church property? Can we have approval to contact someone to come and look it over? Old Business: none New business: 1) Pastor Campbell from Maddock, came to us as a represen-tative of the Board of Directors for Red Willow Bible Camp. He talked about the different programs offered and the costs

to run the camp, the types of fund raisers and the costs for attendees. He asked for some form of support beyond our current level weather as a line item in the budget or as a designated fund that individuals can specify for. He thanked us for what-ever support we are and can give. The Stewardship committee will take it under consideration. 2) Pastor Jeff’s account-ant advised that we restructure the bal-ance between base salary and housing allowance. This would just be a shift of the portions –no change in total amount. Motion , 2nd and carried to adjust the pro-portions between salary and housing. 3)Tom Wade was present as a representa-tive of the Heartland Care Board of Direc-tors. There is a merger in the works be-tween Heartland and Eventide. This would be of benefit to Heartland. Several area Lutheran churches would have to sign off on this merger and then our re-sponsibility to Heartland would end. Dis-cussion centered around the need to let our members be fully advised concerning this topic. Motion, 2nd and carried to put it on the annual meeting agenda. 4) Lu-theran Social Service has raised the funds ($6,000,000) for a new building (in which our Synod hopes to rent office space). They need about $200,000 for furnishings for which they are asking do-nations from the eastern ND churches. St. Olaf’s share would be $5000. Motion, 2nd and carried to have a special fund raiser and whatever comes in would be donated. Meeting adjourned 8:58 pm. Closed with Lord’s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Loretta Bloomquist.

The history of Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota is an important part of the history of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. This timeline shows our connection to LSS starting in 1940. Nellie Svee gave her estate to the Norwegian Lu-theran Church of America in 1938 at the time of her death. She was a Norwegian immigrant who ran a general store in Grand Harbor, ND. Nellie and her husband were active in St. Olaf Lutheran Church. There is a lot of information about her found in our scrapbook. She left the majority of her estate to be used for pro-grams and agen-cies that serve the elderly, children or young people. The fund is ad-ministered by the ELCA through the North Dakota Synods. In upcoming Spires there will be more printed about the many programs of LSS of ND.

Timeline will be continued in next month’s Spire.

St. Olaf Altar Guild would like to invite you to help decorate our church for Christmas with gifts of poinsettias

Poinsettias may be given in memory or in honor of loved ones by filling out the coupon and

returning it to the church office. A list of all memorials and those in honor of loved

ones will be published in an insert in the Christmas Eve bulletin.

Donations of money to the Altar Guild will be used to purchase some poinsettias and will also go towards the purchase of other flowers for

special occasions throughout the year. Please mark your plant if you plan to pick it up after Christmas!
