Christmas Came Early for The BanquetHy-Vee, Avera & Dean Foods Supply Milk for 2018The Banquet serves 8,000 gallons of milk each year to people who seek food and fellowship at The Banquet. Thanks to Hy-Vee, Inc., with the help of Avera Health and Dean Foods, that milk will be given to The Banquet in 2018.

“This is a Christmas blessing!” said Tamera Jerke-Liesinger, The Banquet’s Executive Director. “Milk is a huge expense for The Banquet, and this gift will save us thousands of dollars this year.”

Our faithful donors who have contributed financially to The Banquet’s milk fund will now be asked to help us with other necessities such as electricity and other utility bills, serving supplies for Banquet West, our satellite location, and cleaning and office supplies. The Banquet relies solely on private donations to keep its doors open.

Commit to SERVE During Lent Feb. 14 – March 29 The three pillars of Lent are praying, fasting and almsgiving, yet this is a very difficult time for The Banquet to fill meals. Last year The Banquet had 14 unsponsored meals during Lent— meaning there were no volunteer groups to cook, serve or cover the cost of those meals. The Banquet relied on last minute Angel volunteers to cook and serve all of those meals and general funds to cover the cost of the food.

This year we are challenging you to commit to serving a meal during Lent. Our guests need you!

Come meet Jesus at The Banquet table this Lenten season. We currently have about three dozen open meals during Lent.

New Staff

Daryl Meyer joined The Banquet staff as Assistant Site coordinator and Security for Banquet West in August 2017. Daryl is a Sioux Fallsnative, served in USAF, graduated from USD, and then worked in the computer industry until his retirement in 2013.

He occasionally volunteered at the Banquet with his church group then joined our Angel List in May 2015. He immediately liked doing all of the jobs but loved serving beverages the most, because he got to talk with and get to know our guests. “I always feel like I am getting more out of serving than our guests do. I have gotten to participate and experience amazing moments at Banquet downtown and Banquet West.”

Daryl loves the Vikings, bike riding, playing cards and bowling. (He even owns his own bowling shoes!)

Shop til They Drop

A big thank you to the Sioux Falls Morning Optimist Club members for setting up a “store” where children could chose gifts or their parents and grandparents. Nearly 120 children “shopped” for presents with the help of Optimist members. The adult helpers also wrapped the gifts and sent the little shoppers on their way with a frosted sugar cookie.

Jean and her daughter Tara eat meals at Banquet West on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. These meals are served in rented space at the Nordstrom Johnson Building on the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds. Jean is a seasonal construction worker who was laid off just before Thanksgiving. Tara is caring for her two nephews and niece, ages 5, 9 and 10. The two women share the childcare duties while trying to stretch their budgets to take care of the kids. Jean works day labor jobs throughout the winter until her construction job starts up again in the spring. “I can’t give up my summer job. I make $15 an hour all summer. The days I work the heavy equipment, I make $16 an hour,” said Jean.

While the women and children enjoy the meals they receive at Banquet West, they were especially grateful for the personal hygiene packets and Christmas gifts they received for the children. “We never expected what they did for us, the hygiene things, it was a Godsend. The kids loved the shower scrubbies and the electric toothbrush. The laundry detergent, that’s stuff we can’t get with food stamps.”

Several Sioux Falls businesses collected toys for the kids and distributed them the same night as the Shower Our Guest with Care Packets were given. “The quality of those toys was never expected! They wanted to make a huge difference in these kids’ lives and they did!”

Jean said she had purchased a few items for the kids to put under the tree but nothing like they received from the volunteers who gave out the toys. “All we could afford were a couple of gifts from the Dollar Store. These gifts really leveled the playing field for the kids when they go back to school. They can say they received Legos and real toys.”

Christmas is a Magical Time at The BanquetIt’s a blessed and busy time between Thanksgiving and Christmas at The Banquet. Thank you to all who responded to our need for Shower our Guests with Care packets, laundry detergent, dish detergent and toilet paper for guests. More than 1,200 packets were distributed just before Christmas. Here’s what the guests had to say about the gifts they received.

“This was awesome to get these. I was one of those people having no income because of health issues so all this was excellent for me and my daughter. While I was eating, the guys at the table were excited and said ‘now we can take a decent shower.’ Thank you. God bless!” - Banquet guest

Money has been extremely tight the past few months and we weren’t able to get our children anything for Christmas, which is fine, but we went to Banquet West tonight and were surprised to find out gifts and essentials were being handed out and Santa was there. A mix of great weather and the determination to help feed hungry people raised a record $50,000 for the Thanksgiving Day Run for Food. Nearly 600 people made their way to The Banquet on Thanksgiving morning to run, walk or just drop off a monetary donation.

Book Your Group for July, August, September—Our Most Difficult Months to FillA question we are often asked is what month or what meal is the most difficult to fill. In 2017 September was the most challenging month with 13 open meals and breakfast was the most difficult meal with 43 breakfasts left open. In general summer is a difficult time for us to get groups to serve our meals because that is when everyone goes on vacation, but hunger never takes a vacation. Families in poverty struggle in the summer months keeping their kids fed and The Banquet takes them in, typically serving around 500 meals in one evening. This is when we need serving groups more than ever. This year when graduation season, summer vacation, and back to school are upon you please remember to think of The Banquet and get a group together to come serve a meal. We will need you! Signing up your group is easy - simply go to www.thebanquetsf.org under the ‘Serve a Meal’ tab and check out available dates. Click on Serve and Sponsor this meal and fill out the form. Thank you!

The Banquet Mourns the Loss of Joan Weber Faithful volunteer Joan Weber served on The Banquet’s founding board back in 1985 and was instrumental in beginning this feeding ministry. Joan most recently served The Banquet as a Front Desk Volunteer before retiring in November. Joan showed compassion and kindness to The Banquet guests, staff and volunteers and will be sorely missed.
