HELLO!CHRISTINAFENTON

Christina Fenton is a recent graduate of Wentworth Institute of Technology, located in Boston, MA. She has spent her education pushing herself to understand a variety of design through both her studies and internship experiences. She has had the opportunity to work for a privately owned furniture studio, a fortune 500 toy design and manufacturing company, volunteer with local design education groups, and has spent four months studying design in Europe (primarily Berlin, Germany). She has also participated in a concentrated footwear design studio and lead the Wentworth IDSA (Industrial Design Society of America) Chapter.

01ADIDASPROAdidasPro (Men’s Professional Line) was my final design project within my concentrated footwear design studio. This project was roughly three weeks long and required a final verbal presentation and critique with industry professionals from Sperry, Clarks, and Reebok. The goal was to design for a demographic that was different from our own, and for mine a young men’s professional shoe fit the bill. I wanted this to resembling a transition into the working world from adolescence while holding true to the characteristics of a trusted and familiar brand.

BREIF 18-24 year old male transitioning into the workforce.

Holds true to classic Adidas charactoristics.

Three styles and price points:

Slip-on $60

Zip-up Mid $70

Low Oxford Wingtip $90

To be released Fall of 2015.

USER AND TREND RESEARCH

The following is a look of predicted trends and color schemes for the Fall of 2015. With this, color mock-ups were constructed for each design of The Professional Line.

OUTSOLE TECH PACK

The outsole is consistant throughout the Men’s Professional line. For manufacturing purposes as well as aesthetic connecting the three designs as a ‘family’ only the styling of the uppers were changed. Below are material discriptions as well as detail call-outs.

02BRACEYOURSELFBRACE Yourself is a sport safety based initiative that strives to create the latest innovative ski and snowboard gear at the highest level of safety possible, setting the bar high for competitors in the current market. With help from Marker and Donjoy, BRACE Yourself has developed a pair of high quality ski pants with built in customizable knee braces that prevent damage to the anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL) before serious injuries occur while still allowing flexibility to hit the highest jumps and land the sickest tricks.

RESEARCH RESULTING IN CONCEPT

Through interviews with those who have professional experience in coaching, health training, and first hand athletic experience as well as a range of case studies and anonymous surveys specific proof has been gathered to show that something needs to change in how sports safety is addressed.

Is this really a problem that is in need of a solution?

YES!

SYNTHESIZED DATA RESEARCH

In comparison between a survey I created and the article titled “Epidemiology of athletic knee injuries: A 10-year study” along with additional research, I have discovered a product opportunity pertaining to knee safety. Above is a compilation of specific facts and

views that will support my case. The risk of injury is increasing, and will soon become an epidemic if not addressed.

According to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, ACL tears in children under the age of 18 has risen 400% in three years.

“I can’t stress enough how important knowledge and prevention is.” -Joslyn Del Signore

“When students first attend CVA we spend Sophomore year on fixing bad habits that they pick up before attending training programs with us.” -Hannah Willihan

“Many people do not have good knowledge of how to train for a sport, and are confused about where to get good information.” -Laura Anderson

32.6% of all sports injuries involve the knee.

In a 10 year study on the epidemiology of athletic knee injury, 17,397 patients were examined in which 39.8% involved knee injuries. Within these injuries, 49.48% were ACL ruptures. It was also found that the majority of the patients were between the ages of 20

and 29 years old and ruptured their ACL by soccer or skiing. 79.4% went on to have reconstructive surgery.

67% of all sports injuries occur during competition due to advanced stress upon the athlete.

BLUE SKY IDEA

Why can’t we combine higher safety measures with already needed equipment? Adding a brace to your normal ski pants will create super safety ski pants.

Redesigning ski pants to create higher and better safety measures presenting ACL tears is just the start to a line of improved sportswear.

03CLIFSANDALClif was a project of firsts. It was my first attempt at a footwear project, first time drawing a shoe, first of hearing what a last or what the proper terminology was, first realistic rendering of a shoe, first time making a pattern, first time creating a brand identity, and the first model I had ever made of a shoe. Though it was a lot to learn at once, I fell in love with the process and was constantly excited to know more. I learned what a brief was and was instructed to make one for a sandal, using myself as the demographic. This is where I found out what to do and not do in the footwear design process and how much goes into objects that most of us take for granted.

RENDER AND MODEL

The physical model of the sandal was constructed in many different parts. The outsole was hand carved out of renshape then layered with laser cut styrene parts to make the typographical detailing with a foam tred. The upper was made of lasercut leather, black detailing material, with an installed boa system technology.

04CARCHARGERAfter visiting an energy conservation and electric car charging development company in Berlin, Germany I decided to take a fun filled and ironic approach to designing my own electric car charging station inspired by none other than Monsters Inc.! In the Disney Pixar original, a community of monsters power their city by the screams of children, which they gather through acting out the ‘monster in the closet’ scenario that we all experience as children. Toward the end of the movie, they realize that a child’s laughter is even more powerful than their screams and thus change the power source of their city to this ‘renewable’ energy. I personally related this to the fuel versus energy debate that has taken place in recent years, and thus my concept was born holding true to aesthetic elements found in typical Monsters Inc. equipment for a pro laughter community.

05PENDESIGNSI have always loved working with the wood lathe. Recently I discovered a little shop that taught me how to make pens. This hobby quickly became an obsession and what I like to do with my free time. I hope to continue and experiment with various materials and forms.

07W.E.T.BERLINDesigned by: Christina Fenton, Haiden Goggin, Jonathan Holland, and Anthony Travaglini. Water Enhanced Tempelhof was a one-week collaboration project within my study abroad semester in Berlin, Germany. Its objective was to enhance the grilling experience for Berliners. Grilling is not only a frequent activity, but also a cultural one which we were able to experience many times while there as a bonding experience between us and our neighbors. Though its popularity is easy to see, there are still many places that do not accommodate for such activity. Our chosen location of the old Tempelhof air strip (used in the Cold War to transport goods to starving people of East Berlin) and now family park, lacks the accessibility to water and light needed in emergency situations. This is our solution.

NIGHT FEATURES

Head and foot lighting powered by the roof solor panel allow citizens to enjoy the park later the current till dusk rule. These will light the way to exits and help in times where you need a little extra light.

IN THE PUBLIC EYE

We had the provolege of pinning up our project at the 2013 Open House held at Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin, the design school which we had been working with throughout our summer in Germany.

Water Enhanced Tempelhof was also featured in multiple design and environmental blogs such as Yanko Design and Enviornmental Design in the Fall of 2013 and has been making its way around via pinterest and behance.com.
