By Jamie Biesiada One Wall resident has taken her own life experience with sco- liosis and turned it into a resource for others with the dis- order, forming her own nonprof- it to aid teenage girls through difficult times. Christie Maruka-Loran, founder of the nonprofit Catch the Curve and owner of Fashion Fix, was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 12. Scoliosis, Ms. Maruka-Loran said, “is a disorder that causes an abnormal curve of the spine.” That curve can take the shape of a C or an S, she explained. In the United States, 7 million people are afflicted with scoliosis. There are several ways of dealing with scoliosis, she explained, the first being obser- vation to monitor a patient’s condition, and make sure it does not get worse. Patients and doc- tors could also opt for the non- operative treatment of a back brace, or a surgical option — spinal fusion. By the time Ms. Maruka- Loran, now the mother of 7- year-old Mason, was 15, she had a spinal curve of more than 50 degrees. She began wearing a brace, which she said was “enor- mous.” It was difficult to conceal under her clothing, she said, and she regularly wore men’s button- down Oxford shirts and jeans. Throughout her teenage years, though, Ms. Maruka-Loran had a passion for fashion and cloth- ing. “I didn’t fit in with anybody — people always looked at me like I was an overweight person,” she said. “They didn’t even know there was a brace underneath.” By the time she was 19, another treatment — electric stimulation — had not helped Ms. Maruka-Loran’s condition, and by the time she stopped growing, her spinal curve was at 65 degrees, crushing one of her lung’s, compressing her kidneys and leaving her torso distorted. At 19, Ms. Maruka-Loran decided she had to have correc- tive surgery. “It’s time,” she recalled think- ing. “I have to have the surgery, no matter how dangerous it is.” Without surgery, she explained, she would have faced life in a wheelchair by the time she was 30, and would be unable to have children. With the sur- gery, she risked paralysis. Ms. Maruka-Loran attributes her successful surgery to being in shape — she regularly worked out until the day of the surgery, she said, which allowed doctors to get a better correction. Her spine now has a 25-degree curve. Ms. Maruka-Loran has a rod in her back that goes from her neck to her waist, she said. “I am in pain now as an adult,” she said, but “I am in great shape.” Staying in shape and exercis- ing helps with pain, and also allowed her to have a natural childbirth, though doctors had said a C-section would be neces- sary, Ms. Maruka-Loran said. About one and one-half years ago, Ms. Maruka-Loran felt it was time to take her own experi- ence and use her knowledge to aid young girls with scoliosis. She founded Catch the Curve at that time. “We are dedicated to mini- mizing the emotional effects on teenage girls that are dealing with scoliosis,” Ms. Maruka- Loran explained recently. After a local daily newspaper ran a feature story about Ms. Maruka-Loran’s life and experi- ences, she said, she was spurred to begin the nonprofit. Many people called her the day the story came out, she said, who did not even know she had scoliosis. Among the calls were parents whose daughters needed surgery for scoliosis. “When I started hearing that, I just remembered back [to] how much pain I was in emotionally as a teenager, basically hiding it from the world,” Ms. Maruka- Loran said. She recalled friends telling her, “You have to have a founda- tion.” Ms. Maruka-Loran is also the owner of Fashion Fix, which she described as “a mobile shopping and stylist business.” She uses a Mercedes Sprinter van, customized with a dressing room and all types of clothing, from black-tie garb to bathing suits, as a mobile styling unit. Currently, Ms. Maruka- Loran is the stylist for the E! Entertainment show “Jerseylicious,” and Miss Delaware Kayla Martell. Ms. Martell recently placed in the top 10 in the Miss America competition. She ran on the platform of awareness for alope- cia areata, a disorder she has that causes a loss of hair. “She’s such a spectacular per- son,” Ms. Maruka Loran said, of Ms. Martell. The two women’s stories are similar, she said. “I suffered as a teenager, and I got through it,” she said, liking her experience to Ms. Martell’s, with alopecia areata. Ms. Maruka-Loran’s profes- sional life now intermingles with her nonprofit. Fashion Fix donates clothing to Catch the Curve, and Ms. Maruka-Loran gives makeovers to girls with scoliosis. That, she said, provides a much-needed confidence boost to scoliosis patients during their difficult teenage years. “It’s just amazing how I’ve touched their lives now,” she said. Ms. Maruka-Loran often speaks with girls on the phone, she said, working them through the difficulties of having scolio- sis. “I just feel like it’s my obliga- tion,” she explained. Several events are planned for Catch the Curve in the future, including a fashion show in October, and Ms. Maruka- Loran is seeking the help of locals through volunteer time or donations to the foundation.
