WHO IS THE MESSIAH?

Jesus Christ, who was crucified around A.D. 30 in Jerusalem. The 12 disciples created the Catholic Church in Rome.

JESUS’ STORY

Jesus was a Jew who was born about 2000 years ago in Bethlehem. He challenged the Jewish rabbis and their temples. He felt that they had begun to worship wealth and beauty more than God. Jesus lived for 33 years before being crucified by the Romans.

WHO ARE CHRISTIANS?

Christians are people who believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and who follow his teachings and those of the Christian churches that grew up after his death. Christians believe that Jesus rose from the dead and appeared to his disciples (followers) to show everyone that there is another life with one, eternal, loving God.

WHAT DO CHRISTIANS BELIEVE?Christians believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of God and that: God sent his Son to earth to save

humanity from the consequences of its sins

Jesus was fully human, and experienced this world in the same way as other human beings of his time

Jesus was tortured and gave his life on the Cross (At the Crucifixion)

Jesus rose from the dead on the third day after his Crucifixion (the Resurrection)

Christians believe that Jesus was the Messiah promised in the Old Testament Christians believe that there is only one God, but that this one God consists of three "persons“…the Holy Trinity:

WHEN DID THE CATHOLIC CHURCH BEGIN?

It began with the first Pope…Peter. He and the other disciples established the church in Rome, Italy. Once the Roman Empire became Christians, the church became the only Christian authority in the world until the early 1500s.

Vatican City is located within the city of Rome. It is the smallest city in the world, but it is the home of the Pope of the Catholic Church. St. Peter’s Cathedral was designed by Michelangelo and it is where the Pope lives and works.

WHY ARE THERE NOW OTHER CHRISTIAN CHURCHES?

A Catholic Monk named Martin Luther challenged the Church in the late 1400s and it began a time of change for the Church (the Reformation). People broke away and began their own Protestant churches…Protestant=Protest

HOW ARE THE PROTESTANT CHURCHES ORGANIZED?

There are now over 25,000 different Protestant faiths; including, Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian.

WHAT IS ASH WEDNESDAY AND LENT?

Catholics begin their Easter season with Ash Wednesday and for the next 40 days (Lent) they make personal sacrifices in honor of Jesus and the life that he sacrificed.

WHAT IS ADVENT?

Advent begins the new year for the Christians. It begins four weeks before Christmas, and Catholics tend to be focused more on God rather than on buying for Christmas and decorating.
